Family member says blackout struck Hamzah Zainudin's in-laws' home moments before fatal fire
IPOH, June 20 — The home of Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin's in-laws in Kampung Sungai Rapat Tambahan here reportedly experienced a power outage before it caught fire last night. The blaze claimed the life of Hamzah's mother-in-law, Datin Salmiah Nyak Matt, 84, while her husband, Datuk Abdul Ghani Ngah, 83, suffered from breathing difficulties. Their son, Ahmad Ikhwan, 57, said his youngest sibling, who lives at the house, told him the incident occurred at about 9.15pm. 'My brother went out to check on the neighbours, thinking there was a blackout in the whole area, but there wasn't. 'Then he saw thick smoke coming out of mum's room. He rushed back in and saw the room was already filled with smoke,' he told reporters here today. Ahmad Ikhwan said his father is currently receiving treatment at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here. He added that his mother's remains will be buried at the Kampung Rapat Jaya Muslim cemetery after funeral prayers at Masjid Jamek Kampung Melayu Sungai Rapat today. Meanwhile, Hamzah was seen arriving at the HRPB Forensics Department with his wife, Datin Seri Norashikin Abdul Ghani, before accompanying the hearse to the mosque. Earlier, Ipoh police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said the police received an emergency call at 9.19pm and confirmed that the fire involved a two-storey house. The incident involved six individuals, four of whom, aged between 18 and 49, escaped unharmed. — Bernama

Ipoh house fire kills 84-year-old woman, five family members survive
IPOH, June 20 — An 84-year-old woman died in a fire at a two-storey house in Jalan Raja Abdullah, Kampung Sungai Rapat Tambahan here, last night. Ipoh police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, in a statement, said the police were alerted about the house fire at 9.19pm. He said initial investigations found the house occupied by six family members. 'An 83-year-old man was rescued and sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB), Ipoh, for treatment, while an 84-year-old woman died at the scene. 'Four other family members, aged between 18 and 49, were also rescued and did not suffer any injuries,' he said. Abang Zainal Abidin said further investigations were being conducted to determine the cause of the fire and urged those with information on the incident to contact the Ipoh District Control Centre (DCC) at 05-2542222. — Bernama

No blood shortage at HRPB, public urged to avoid speculation
IPOH: The Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) has not issued any official statement regarding a blood shortage, affecting the treatment of victims from yesterday's tragic bus accident, which claimed the lives of 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). In this regard, state Communications, Multimedia and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi assured the public that there is no cause for concern, while also urging against speculation which could lead to unnecessary alarm. 'I know that many are deeply affected, and eager to assist in various ways to ensure the best possible care for all victims receiving treatment at HRPB. 'However, while offering help, it is important to avoid actions that may cause unnecessary public concern or anxiety, regarding the follow-up treatment provided by the authorities,' he said when met by Bernama, at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building, today. Earlier, an appeal urging the public to donate blood for critically injured victims went viral on Threads, highlighting the urgent need for blood type A and B donors at HRPB. Mohd Azlan affirmed his commitment to monitoring the latest developments concerning all victims, and expressed readiness to provide assistance if needed. 'For instance, if HRPB does require blood donations, we will promptly disseminate the information through the state Information Department and other relevant stakeholders, to ensure swift and effective support,' he stated. Yesterday's tragic accident involved a chartered bus carrying UPSI students traveling from Jertih, Terengganu, to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The bus overturned at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik, resulting in the loss of 15 lives. The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and three passengers of the Perodua Alza involved in the collision.

Cops to call over 60 people in FRU crash probe
Hilir Perak police chief Bakri Zainal Abidin said an FRU member was placed in the intensive care unit due to internal bleeding and head and abdominal injuries. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police will record statements from more than 60 people to assist in the investigation into the accident that claimed the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit personnel on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam in Teluk Intan, Perak, yesterday morning. Hilir Perak police chief Bakri Zainal Abidin said police would call FRU members who were at the scene of the accident, as well as the owner of the lorry company to aid the investigation. 'This is to avoid biased investigations and so on. I also call on the public to come forward to provide information that can assist our investigation. 'We will look at (the investigation) from all angles, namely human negligence, technical issues involving the vehicle, as well as environmental issues,' Bernama reported him as saying today. Bakri said an FRU member from Unit 5 Ipoh was placed in Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital's intensive care unit due to internal bleeding and head and abdominal injuries. He said eight more injured FRU personnel are still being treated at Teluk Intan Hospital. Earlier this morning, the final honours for the nine who died were completed in accordance with police ceremonial protocol at the FRU Unit 5 base in Sungai Senam, Ipoh. In the 8.50am incident yesterday, a lorry carrying gravel collided with an FRU truck transporting 15 personnel. Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused by a steering wheel failure.
