Streetlights conked off? Baldia babus told to fix blinking woes
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is set to expedite the works of street lighting across the city. Following numerous complaints from corporators and residents about the dysfunctional streetlights, the GHMC commissioner RV Karnan ordered the officials to promptly solve the issue to prevent accidents and other untoward situations, especially in the rainy season. On Thursday, the Commissioner held a conference with Additional and Zonal Commissioners and HODs on dysfunctional streetlights, desilting, sanitation, mosquito control, and tax collection. Following numerous complaints from both corporators and the public, he directed the Zonal Commissioners to conduct evening field visits to identify the underlying causes of these problems and address them effectively. To ensure that issues do not arise, RV Karnan instructed the officers to arrange personnel and resources effectively. Special measures must be implemented to avert potential problems. It is essential for Zonal and Deputy Commissioners, along with Electrical Engineers, to visit the areas where complaints are reported and address these issues promptly. Furthermore, the commissioner emphasized the importance of maintaining sanitation during the rainy season to curb the spread of seasonal illnesses. It is crucial to continue fogging efforts to combat dengue and malaria. Intensive IEC programmes should be implemented through ALOs, along with awareness initiatives targeting students in schools and colleges. Due to the insufficient progress in desilting, the Zonal Commissioners were instructed to take action to ensure advancement by coordinating with Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA).

GHMC chief orders swift action on Durgam Cheruvu drainage issue
Hyderabad: GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan has instructed officials to promptly address the drainage issue at Durgam Cheruvu. On Thursday, the Commissioner inspected the situation alongside the Zonal Commissioner and other relevant officials. During the inspection, the GHMC Commissioner directed the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to regularly desilt the sewer lines and take full ownership of their maintenance. This, he stressed, is crucial to prevent sewage overflows onto walking tracks and to eliminate the entry of sewage into the lake, thereby ensuring a clean and hassle free environment for visitors. He further directed the Executive Engineer of the Lakes division to expedite the diversion of the sewage pipeline. The Raheja CSR team was advised to enhance park amenities to improve the overall aesthetics of the lake area. During the visit, the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was also reviewed, with a recommendation to conduct NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) water testing in addition to existing third party checks. The inspection also included a review of the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) stormwater drain (SWD) works. Officials were instructed to complete this work by September. The Zonal Commissioner was requested to review the progress weekly and ensure that any issues are addressed promptly.

Swanky Shilpa Layout flyover ready; cars set to zoom on new path soon
Hyderabad: The state-of-the-art Outer Ring Road to Kondapur flyover – Shilpa Layout Phase 2, which promises to ease the traffic woes of commuters in the IT Corridor, has been completed and is planned to be inaugurated soon. The flyover was constructed worth Rs 178 crore. On Tuesday, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan reviewed key safety features on the flyover, such as road markings and rumble strips as per IRC standards. The Commissioner ordered the engineering officers to install the rumble strips as per the IRC norms. He also visited the proposed inauguration site and instructed officials to expedite the final works, including road painting and Urban Biodiversity (UBD) plantation along the central median. The commissioner said, 'All civil work has been completed at the flyover, and only beautification and greenery work remain. The flyover, constructed from ORR to Gachibowli for Rs 178 crore, will soon be open for traffic.' The Commissioner was accompanied by Project CE Bhaskar Reddy, Deputy EE Harish, Zonal SE Shankar Nayak and others. Built under the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP), the six-lane flyover spans 1.2 kilometers and is 24 meters wide. It is the third-level flyover at the location, built above the existing Gachibowli Junction and Shilpa Layout Phase 1 flyovers. According to GHMC, its unique feature lies in being a third-level structure constructed atop two pre-existing flyovers. Below, the Gachibowli Junction Flyover, with the Shilpa Layout Phase 1 Flyover situated above it, and now the newly constructed Phase 2 Flyover has been added on top. The flyover will reduce the severe traffic snarls at Gachibowli Junction to a large extent. The new structure is designed to streamline traffic from the ORR towards Kondapur and Hafeezpet, reducing travel time and bypassing frequent bottlenecks at Gachibowli. It will also facilitate smoother travel between Kondapur and Shamshabad Airport, offering a more direct and less congested route to the Financial District and HITEC City. Later, the commissioner inspected various areas in Hafizpet. During the inspection, he instructed the officers to remove the waste under the Hafizpet flyover and make it suitable for sports. Furthermore, he instructed the officers to inspect the Eerla Cheruvu drainage diversion works and complete all pending works. The Commissioner was accompanied by Corporator Jagadish Goud, Zonal SE Shankar Nayak, Lakes EE Narayana, Deputy Commissioner and others.

Water Board MD inspects sewage works at Amberpet
Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) MD, Ashok Reddy, along with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation commissioner, RV Karnan and Musi River Front Development Corporation Limited MD, Narasimha Reddy on Monday inspected the ongoing construction of the 212.5 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Amberpet. The inspection was part of the STP Construction Project Package-1. Ashok Reddy said that the works related to the construction of a 212.6 MLD capacity STP are almost completed and will be commissioned in the next few days. On his visit, accompanied by Hyderabad water board ED Mayank Mittal and officials from various departments, Ashok Reddy reviewed the progress at the site and urged authorities to fast-track the final stage works. He directed that the STP be readied for operation in coming days. The MD emphasised that civil works, internal roads, CC roads, landscaping, and painting should be taken up on a war footing to ensure the plant is fully prepared for inauguration. He stressed the importance of safety at construction sites, insisting that all workers adhere to safety protocols and use the required protective equipment. During the visit, officials also examined different phases of the construction to assess overall progress.

Second phase waste-to-energy plant at Jawaharnagar to begin in August, GHMC tells NGT
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has informed the National Green Tribunal, southern zone, that the second phase of the waste-to-energy (WtE) plant at Jawaharnagar, with a capacity of 24 MW, is expected to commence operations in the first week of Aug. In an affidavit submitted by GHMC commissioner RV Karnan, it was stated that a power purchase agreement was signed on May 12 between Hyderabad MSW Energy Solutions Private Ltd and the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL). The agreement is currently awaiting approval from the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission. The boilers department has granted permission to operate both boilers following successful hydro tests. Steam blowout tests are scheduled for the third week of July, signaling that mechanical systems are on track for commissioning. The tariff for the energy generated will be determined by TGERC under section 62 of the Electricity Act, 2003. It will include considerations such as the tipping fee, with interim arrangements possibly sought through a separate petition. Any govt incentives availed by the operator must be passed on to the discom in line with TGERC directives. The affidavit clarified that no transmission, wheeling, or additional charges will be imposed by TGTransco or the discom for energy purchased. The plant can draw power from the grid only during shutdowns or maintenance, limited to auxiliary consumption (11% of installed capacity). Status of other WtE projects The GHMC is also progressing on other WtE plants. A revised NOC was issued on June 9 to Sri Venkateshwara Green Power Projects Ltd, enhancing the Yacharam plant's capacity from 12 MW to 14 MW. GHMC has requested TGSPDCL to initiate a PPA. This project is expected to be commissioned by Dec 2026. Meanwhile, the stalled Bibinagar project—idle since 2017–18 due to IL&FS's financial troubles—is under review for possible revival. The affidavit was submitted in response to a petition filed by Shankar Narayanan Bala Krishnan and others on waste management and environmental compliance.
