DOJ indicts 9 Crips gang members for ‘wave of violence'
June 19 (UPI) -- The Justice Department has charged nine members of the Eastside Rollin' 20s Crips gang with a 12-count indictment that includes attempted murder, narcotics trafficking and conspiracy, among other charges. "As alleged, RTC members unleashed a wave of violence across three states and the District of Columbia, extending down the East Coast to Florida. Their commission of brutal, indiscriminate acts over perceived slights on social media reflects a particularly dangerous form of gang activity," Justice Department Criminal Division head Matthew R. Galeotti said in a statement after the indictment was unsealed Wednesday. The indictment alleges the RTC members and associates charged "committed numerous violent acts on behalf of the RTC," including a June 2022 murder in Alexandria, Va. ; a July 2021 attempted shooting of several individuals in the District of Columbia; an August 2021 armed robbery and pistol whipping of an individual in Hollywood, Fla.; and a January 2021 attempted murder of two individuals in Winston-Salem, N.C. According to the Justice Department, RTC also obtained and distributed multi-kilogram quantities of pressed fentanyl pills and recruited children "to commit crimes on behalf of the gang, including acts of violence and drug trafficking." "Any of these elements alone -- from violence to illegal drugs to identity theft -- is enough to destroy communities and lives, and these organizations employ them without compunction," U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Erik S. Siebert said in a statement. "Through coordination with our federal, state and local law enforcement partners, we are determined to eradicate criminal gangs and protect our citizens from the detriment they bring." The nine defendants face up to life in prison or the death penalty for murder in aid of racketeering and use of a firearm during a crime of violence causing death. A racketeering conspiracy charge also carries a penalty up to life in prison. The other serious felonies include up to twenty-five years for straw purchasing of guns, up to twenty years for possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute and up to 10 years for conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering. The DOJ said this case "is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime." Amidst farmer concerns and official apathy: Aadhaar-RTC linking program gets stalled
Bengaluru: Karnataka's ambitious program to link Aadhaar with RTC (Record of Rights, Tenancy, and Crops) documents, aimed at curbing fraudulent land sales and scams, is facing significant delays. The slowdown is attributed to a combination of factors, including a lack of information dissemination, official indifference, fear among farmers of losing government benefits, and concerns about revealing benami (proxy) land registrations. The issue was a prominent point of discussion in a recent meeting held at Vidhana Soudha, attended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, senior ministers, and all district commissioners. During the meeting, CM Siddaramaiah reportedly grilled the district commissioners about the sluggish pace of the linking process. Officials were subsequently instructed to expedite efforts to link at least 2.01 crore RTCs with Aadhaar in the coming days. Despite various other responsibilities, revenue department officials have managed to link Aadhaar with 2.27 crore RTCs. However, critics argue that officials have largely failed to generate widespread consensus among farmers and encourage their voluntary participation in the scheme. Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda's Aadhaar seeding initiative, like several other programs he oversees, appears to be stuck at around the '50 percent' mark. According to sources within the Revenue Department, out of 4,36,60,803 RTC holders in the state, Aadhaar had initially been seeded with 1,42,34,656 RTCs. The directive from the aforementioned meeting was to bring at least 2.01 crore farmers under the purview of this scheme as soon as possible. As of June 10, records indicate that 2,27,70,170 RTCs have been linked with Aadhaar. While the Revenue Department claims an 85% progress, when compared to the total number of RTC holders, the actual progress hovers around 50%. Several key reasons are contributing to the campaign's sluggish pace. A major hurdle is the unresolved issue of 'Pouthi Khata' (heir transfer of property), with 60,000-80,000 such cases pending settlement in some districts. Additionally, 24 lakh 'Podhi' (subdivision) cases are pending, along with 15 lakh 'Podhi Durasti' (subdivision correction) cases. Beyond these documentation-related issues, many farmers harbour anxieties and objections regarding the linking of their RTCs with Aadhaar. There's a prevailing fear that this process could lead to a reduction in existing government benefits, electricity subsidies, and centrally sponsored grants. The apprehension that benami registrations might come to light is also a significant factor contributing to the reluctance among farmers.

"We are taking full-fledged measures for a hassle-free journey for the participants and general public as well," the DGP stated. MT Krishna Babu , special secretary of health department, stated that officials should work in coordination to successfully organise International Yoga Day. This was discussed during the review meeting at the AU Convention Center's Command Control Center with special officers, police, and officials from various departments to discuss arrangements for buses, movement of people and students, parking, traffic, and sanitation. Krishna Babu emphasised that officials should work together to ensure the safe transportation of attendees, including students, to the designated locations without traffic issues and safely return them to their destinations. He instructed that people coming from Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Paderu, and Anakapalli districts should be directly transported to their assigned blocks.
