Video clip case: MACC calls in Sabah assemblyman to give his statement
KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah state assemblyman has been called in again by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). It is learnt he was requested to go to the MACC office here on Wednesday (June 18) to give additional statements pertaining to the mining prospecting case, said a source. The MACC source said the assemblyman had been called in before, and that there would be no charges yet, as investigations were ongoing. ALSO READ: Video clip case: At least two individuals to be charged, says Azam Baki When contacted, the assemblyman declined to comment as it is believed he was at the MACC office to give his statement. Last year, he had stated that he was willing to cooperate with the MACC in the matter. On Thursday (June 12), MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said at least two people are expected to be charged in this case soon. He said he would make an announcement on this soon. The investigation was prompted by the release late last year of a series of recordings, the so-called "whistleblower videos", linking several assemblymen allegedly discussing bribes worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit up to RM4mil in return for securing projects in a state.

Ipoh gala in aid of residential dementia facility
Artist's impression of the society's planned facility for advanced dementia patients. Dementia Society Perak is seeking funds to build the first dementia-specific residential care facility in the country. Its founder Prof Dr Esther Ebenezer said towards this end, a fundraising gala dinner would be held at Royal Perak Golf Club in Ipoh tonight. 'The aim of the dinner is to raise awareness about dementia and generate funds towards Malaysia's first purpose-built residential care facility for advanced dementia patients. 'This initiative will provide much-needed support for people living with dementia and their families. 'In doing so, it will address a critical gap in long-term, specialised care in the country,' she said when contacted. The dinner includes live music, trivia challenge and charity auction, with proceeds directly supporting the establishment of the facility. 'This gala dinner is more than a fundraiser; it's a step towards creating a compassionate, supportive environment for those who need it most,' she added. StarMetro reported on Nov 24, 2023 on the society's plan to expand its BebeLEC Day Centre in Jalan Lang, Ipoh, into a full-time residential care facility, costing between RM3mil and RM4mil. Prof Ebenezer, who is a consultant psychiatrist, said the expanded facility was likely to be built near the BebeLEC centre, with a care ecosystem that would include day care as well as residential services. The facility, she said, would provide round-the-clock care when home management became untenable, with the focus on palliative support and behavioural symptom management. The new facility will also provide a supportive environment for individuals who can no longer manage independent living. 'It will be designed to preserve autonomy through structured support, foster social connection via community living and offer specialist care for complex behavioural and cognitive needs.' Prof Ebenezer added that dementia was an umbrella term describing a range of progressive neurological disorders that impaired memory, cognition, behaviour and functional ability. The condition diminished the quality of life for individuals with dementia and their caregivers. 'The condition frequently results in progressive disability and profound dependency on caregivers. 'The physical, psychological, social and economic burdens placed on families, caregivers and society are substantial. 'Yet, this impact remains unrecognised and undervalued. 'Low public awareness, persistent stigma and misconceptions about dementia often lead to delayed diagnosis and inadequate care,' she added. The raid, which took place in Bandar Tasik Selatan, Cheras, on Thursday, involved the elite Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS). The ACTS team was called in to provide security after the MACC received information that a secret room believed to contain valuables and weapons was located within the premises. 'The ACTS team was deployed to ensure the safety of MACC officers and to escort seized items back to the commission's headquarters in Putrajaya,' the MACC's strategic communications division said yesterday. Among the items seized during the search were 84 luxury handbags valued at RM3mil, 11 branded wristwatches estimated at RM1mil, and high-end liquor worth approximately RM5mil. The commission also confiscated gold bars, coins and figurines estimated to be worth RM3mil, as well as diamonds and other jewellery worth RM4mil. MACC officers also discovered a luxury-brand casino game set, believed to be worth RM150,000. The raid also uncovered a hidden, fortified room used for storing weapons and ammunition. However, no seizures were made as the firearms were registered under a private security firm owned by the Tan Sri. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the total value of the items seized during the operation was about RM16mil. He said further seizures could follow as investigations continue. 'The statement-taking process for the individual has been postponed to a later date due to health concerns,' he added. So far, the MACC have recorded the statements of 53 witnesses. On June 3, the MACC disclosed that it had seized assets worth around RM143mil linked to the case.

Over RM4mil in 1MDB-linked funds in Swiss bank account recovered by MACC
PETALING JAYA: Over RM4mil traced to a Swiss bank account and linked to the embezzlement of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds was successfully recovered recently by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The commission said in a statement on Friday (June 13) that the sum of USD954,299.58 found in a BSI bank account was returned to the Malaysian government. The MACC said the forfeiture was granted by High Court judge Muniandy Kannyappan on learning from the prosecution that no objections or claims were made by any party in relation to the funds during proceedings at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Friday. The commission said judge Muniandy allowed the funds, which were in a bank account registered in the name of Derivale Limited and named one Azlin bin Alias as the beneficiary, to be forfeited to the Malaysian government through the MACC. The forfeiture was made under Section 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001). The case was also the MACC's first success in recovering overseas assets without resorting to the process of prosecution.
