RM1.48mil in drugs, assets seized in Johor apartment raid

JOHOR BARU: Police have dismantled a drug trafficking syndicate that rented two units in the same gated apartment complex, using one as a processing and repackaging centre. The group, led by a 31-year-old man who had only been active for two months, was crippled following four raids in the district last week. Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the raids were carried out on June 12 and 13 following a week of surveillance, resulting in the seizure of various drugs worth over RM1.28 million. Besides the mastermind, three other men, a Singaporean man, and a Thai woman aged between 30 and 39 were also arrested. The syndicate operated out of a guarded apartment where drugs were repackaged and stored before being distributed locally. The locations raided included two homestays and an apartment, which the group rented for short stays at around RM300 per day before relocating. They rented two units in the apartment block, one of which was used as a storage facility, while the other served as their residence. Seized drugs included 7.669kg of ecstasy powder, 13.6g of ketamine, and 8g of Eramin 5 pills. Police also confiscated RM3,000 in cash, two cars, and jewellery, bringing the total value of seized items to over RM1.48 million. The syndicate repackaged the drugs into sachets resembling three-in-one beverage packets, which were sold for between RM200 and RM300 each. Urine tests showed all suspects tested positive for methamphetamine. They are being remanded for 12 days until June 24 to assist investigations under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

KPKM Approved 220 Agricultural Projects Under Land Use Optimisation Programme

KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- A total of 220 projects have been approved under the Land Use Optimisation Programme in collaboration with state governments nationwide for 2024 and 2025, as of May 30. In a statement today, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) announced that the projects encompass crop cultivation, livestock, fisheries, agro-tourism, and capacity-building for farmers, planters, fishermen and breeders. 'Through Budget 2025, the Federal government has allocated RM300 million to execute various agricultural development initiatives in partnership with state governments. 'This programme includes improving, upgrading and carrying out agricultural activities on land which is under the joint jurisdiction of state governments and KPKM,' the statement read. The matter was announced at the first meeting of the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security with State Agriculture Executive Councillors for 2025, held in Putrajaya yesterday. In addition to two papers for consideration and five papers for information, the meeting also discussed a proposal for the official handover of 51 National Satellite Farm complexes built by the Department of Veterinary Services using federal funds on state-owned land in Negeri Sembilan, Johor and Perak. 'This move aims to streamline the leasing and maintenance of immovable assets by the respective state authorities in a lawful and organised manner. 'The meeting agreed that the handover would resolve issues of unclear asset ownership and enable state governments to manage and maintain the assets more systematically, ensuring the continuity of livestock operations and optimal use of existing infrastructure,' the statement read. Meanwhile, on the role of state executive councillors addressing 'grey areas' in rice bowl zones, one of the proposals raised was to transfer assets with unclear ownership to the state or district Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), to ensure more efficient and effective padi field irrigation management.

KLIA Customs director Zulkifli Muhammad said that on April 17, a man was arrested for trying to smuggle out 14.65 kg of cannabis buds worth almost RM1.44 million in his checked baggage on a flight to a European country. He said the man was subjected to a baggage inspection after his travel was blocked by the Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) due to a blacklist record. "During the baggage scan, the man attempted to flee but was apprehended by Customs personnel. "The inspection found that the cannabis buds were packed in vacuum-sealed plastic to avoid detection," he told a press conference today. Zulkifli said on May 16, Customs found 5.31 kg of ecstasy worth almost RM900,000 that was being smuggled in through a consignment at a cargo terminal operator in the KLIA Free Trade Zone. He said the drugs, believed to have originated from a European country, were packaged and declared as laptop components. Then, on May 24, he said that 10.18 kg of syabu, worth nearly RM300,000, concealed in a consignment along with clothing, was also intercepted. He said investigations into both drug shipments are underway, but face obstacles as the smugglers were likely using fake company names and addresses. "We have gone to the (premises) as declared in the consignment information, but the company either does not exist or is using someone else's address," he said. - BERNAMA

Bursa Malaysia, Grab channel zakat to aid 500 kidney patients

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 500 kidney patients from the asnaf group in the Federal Territories will receive RM300 Grab ride vouchers each to help ease transportation to dialysis treatment centres. The RM150,000 contribution was made through wakalah zakat funds from Bursa Malaysia (RM100,000) and Grab Malaysia (RM50,000), under the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP). Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the initiative aims to ease the financial burden of patients who require long-term dialysis treatment. 'With the high cost of transportation, especially for those who need to travel several times a week, this burden can be overwhelming. 'This contribution may not be much, but I hope it can at least help make things easier for the patients so they can focus better on their treatment,' he said at the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ)-MAIWP Ziarah Kasih programme at the Batu Muda MAIWP-PICOMS Haemodialysis Centre here today. Also present were University College of MAIWP International (UCMI) chief executive officer and vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Noor Inayah Yaakub, Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed and Grab Malaysia country operations and mobility director Rashid Shukor. Meanwhile, Fad'l said the wakalah zakat contribution reflected Bursa Malaysia's commitment to supporting initiatives that bring a positive impact to society. 'We believe a company's success is not only measured by financial performance or operational excellence, but also by its contribution to community wellbeing and sustainability practices,' he said. Fad'l added that the collaboration with PPZ-MAIWP was an example of how zakat could be effectively channelled to ease the burden of the underprivileged. He said Bursa Malaysia would continue to play an active role in leveraging zakat as a social finance tool, while encouraging public-listed companies to give back to the community.
