#SHOWBIZ: Finas to kick off special project for veteran actors, crew
KUALA LUMPUR: Efforts to improve the welfare of veteran film actors are set to be enhanced by offering them well-paid job opportunities. This commitment comes from the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (Finas), which aims to collaborate with local production companies to implement the initiative. Finas chairman, Datuk Hans Isaac, hopes this endeavour will help alleviate common complaints from veteran artistes regarding low pay or payments that don't reflect their hard work. "Following discussions between Finas and the Ministry of Communications, we'll be launching a pilot project for a super telemovie drama where every person involved will be a veteran." "This includes cameramen, audio technicians, editors, scriptwriters, directors, and actors." "This project is funded by the Creative Content Fund (DKK) and, if successful, we will continue it in the future," Hans said recently at an event held in collaboration with the Malaysian Entertainment Journalists and Writers Association (WHAM). Also in attendance were Finas CEO Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, and WHAM president Datuk Tengku Khalidah Tengku Bidin, alongside entertainment journalists from various media organisations. Hans explained that the project will require producers to return 40 per cent of sales proceeds to Finas, ensuring the social responsibility initiative can be sustained. "For example, we will provide producers with RM150,000 to create dramas. Producers must spend all of that money on the crew and cast, paying them amounts commensurate with their experience," he said. "If a veteran actor plays the main character, they must be paid the rate for a lead actor. Producers need to remember that this project isn't for them to make a profit." He continued: "If they sell this product to broadcasters, 40 per cent of the sales proceeds must be returned to Finas so that this project can continue on an ongoing basis." Hans also mentioned that Finas will review the list of names of the actors and crew involved before the project begins to ensure that only veterans are employed. When asked about the potential reception from broadcasters, Hans expressed confidence in the credibility and quality of veteran talent. "I believe broadcasters will be interested in purchasing this product because most existing veteran actors are still in demand. However, not all actors involved will be veterans; we also consider character suitability. "Who knows, if this drama receives a lot of attention and high viewership, it might change broadcasters' perspectives," he said. Hans was appointed Finas chairman on March 26, succeeding Datuk Kamil Othman, who had held the position since Feb 24, 2023. Previously, Hans was appointed to the same role by the then Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Gobind Singh Deo, on April 8, 2019, replacing Samsuni Mohd Nor, whose contract expired in March 2019. Less than a year later, he was reportedly terminated and relinquished the position on May 22, 2020. In another development, Finas is advising film producers, especially newcomers, to join industry associations to expand their knowledge. Azmir said that this would enable them to gain insights from experienced professionals regarding product marketing. "I always advise film producers to consult the Film Producers Association (PFM) on matters related to film marketing," he said. "Within the association, we have many individuals experienced in distribution and the Compulsory Screening Scheme. Most new film producers only know how to make films but lack knowledge in marketing." He added: "When they join an association, if they face problems with films being withdrawn from screenings or moved to smaller cinemas—which often relates to film quality—at least the association can help them advocate." "However, if the association doesn't raise a fuss after receiving a producer's complaint, perhaps the film itself is problematic, and Finas cannot offer any assistance."

Bursa Malaysia, Grab channel zakat to aid 500 kidney patients
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 500 kidney patients from the asnaf group in the Federal Territories will receive RM300 Grab ride vouchers each to help ease transportation to dialysis treatment centres. The RM150,000 contribution was made through wakalah zakat funds from Bursa Malaysia (RM100,000) and Grab Malaysia (RM50,000), under the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP). Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the initiative aims to ease the financial burden of patients who require long-term dialysis treatment. 'With the high cost of transportation, especially for those who need to travel several times a week, this burden can be overwhelming. 'This contribution may not be much, but I hope it can at least help make things easier for the patients so they can focus better on their treatment,' he said at the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ)-MAIWP Ziarah Kasih programme at the Batu Muda MAIWP-PICOMS Haemodialysis Centre here today. Also present were University College of MAIWP International (UCMI) chief executive officer and vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Noor Inayah Yaakub, Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed and Grab Malaysia country operations and mobility director Rashid Shukor. Meanwhile, Fad'l said the wakalah zakat contribution reflected Bursa Malaysia's commitment to supporting initiatives that bring a positive impact to society. 'We believe a company's success is not only measured by financial performance or operational excellence, but also by its contribution to community wellbeing and sustainability practices,' he said. Fad'l added that the collaboration with PPZ-MAIWP was an example of how zakat could be effectively channelled to ease the burden of the underprivileged. He said Bursa Malaysia would continue to play an active role in leveraging zakat as a social finance tool, while encouraging public-listed companies to give back to the community.

'I don't know how I'll survive,' says taxi driver caught touting at KLIA
SEPANG: A taxi driver nabbed for touting at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) pleaded with the Road Transport Department (RTD) for compassion, citing financial hardship and stiff competition from e-hailing services. The 55-year-old man from Seri Kembangan said he was struggling to get passengers and often made less than RM100 a day. "It's hard to make a living outside these days as most users no longer flag down taxis. I can't even earn RM100 a day, and that makes it difficult to cover my daily expenses," he told enforcement officials following the RTD's Ops Ulat at KLIA. The taxi driver said he usually made two to three trips a day, earning between RM150 and RM300 depending on customer agreements, but had to pay RM60 daily for taxi rental. The operation was joined by Transport Ministry secretary-general Datuk Jana Santhiran Muniayan; RTD senior director of legal enforcement Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan; Selangor RTD director Azrin Borhan; and his deputy, Datuk Ahmad Kamarunzaman Mehat. The driver also said he had been arrested four times previously and had borrowed about RM12,000 to pay off summonses and retrieve his vehicle from RTD custody. "I returned to touting at KLIA because this is a lucrative spot where it's easy to get passengers. "I'm pleading with RTD not to seize vehicle because it's a rental taxi from a company. If they take it, I don't know how I'll survive," he said. Meanwhile, Muhammad Kifli said taxi drivers at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2 must use authorised apps to pick up passengers. Those who fail to do so and are caught will be considered touts. Kifli said offenders often used rented public vehicles, which further complicates matters. RTD will also apply for the forfeiture of any vehicle used in touting activities under Section 227 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 (APAD 2010). "This forfeiture action is necessary to curb touting. If we only impose fines, they will pay whatever amount is ordered and return to their illegal activities," he said. From January to mid-June this year, RTD seized 10 public transport vehicles and handled 69 cases involving private cars used for touting.

MAIWP aid brings relief, eases burden of Asnaf families
KUALA LUMPUR: Smiles of relief and heartfelt gratitude marked the Ziarah Kasih Asnaf Bersama MAIWP programme, as asnaf residents of the Sri Perak Public Housing Complex here received aid from the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) today. For the recipients, the aid extended beyond material support, offering hope and assurance that their struggles had not gone unnoticed. Four individuals received various forms of basic necessities and medical assistance through the programme, which was also attended by MAIWP deputy chief executive officer (management) Mohd Fauzi Abidin and Zakat Distribution Division deputy manager (social wellbeing) Wan Maizatun Wan Hassan, along with several MAIWP officials. One of the recipients Noorhaini Zainal Abidin, 54, said the assistance had somewhat eased the burden of caring for her youngest son, Harmie Razali, 21, a final-year student at the Indera Mahkota MARA Professional College in Pahang, who sustained a serious brain injury in a road accident in April last year. The petty trader said her son was completely bedridden and fully dependent on respiratory support and special milk, which came at a cost of about RM2,800 a month. 'Initially, I paid for the treatment myself, but his recovery took time. Eventually, I could no longer afford it, so I reached out to MAIWP again, and they provided physiotherapy assistance at home,' she told reporters. Noorhaini said things began to change when MAIWP stepped in to provide assistance to those in need from June last year, which included essential items such as disposable nappies, special milk and medical equipment. She said MAIWP also covered the cost of her son's physiotherapy treatment, amounting to RM150 per session, to help speed up his recovery. Noorhaini said the process of applying for MAIWP assistance was simple, with applicants only required to submit the necessary documents to the office, and aid approved and delivered to recipients' homes within a month. Another recipient, Siti Zuhaili Idris, 31, expressed her gratitude, saying the assistance had been invaluable in helping her care for her five-year-old daughter, Nur Arissa Sabrina Mohammed Zulkarnain, who suffers from a perforated heart. The mother of two said Nur Arissa Sabrina was diagnosed with the condition while still in the womb and was now fully dependent on special milk and intensive home care, with monthly expenses amounting to nearly RM1,000 for milk, nappies and other medical needs. 'Alhamdulillah, things are easier now as MAIWP gives me two boxes of milk (12 cans), nappies, RM600 in assistance and another RM300 every month,' she said, adding that the application process was straightforward and could be completed online without having to leave her child. Meanwhile, Wan Maizatun said MAIWP always strived to channel aid based on the actual needs of each asnaf family. 'We understand that each family has different needs, so they can inform us of what they actually need through our WhatsApp hotline, and we will do our best to meet them,' she said. At the same time, she dismissed viral allegations of aid misappropriation, stressing that all assistance was distributed in full compliance with the standard operating procedures and procurement guidelines set by the government.
