OCBC extends RM351mil financing for projects in Johor-Singapore SEZ
KUALA LUMPUR: OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Bhd has approved RM351 million in financing for three major real estate developments within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). The funding supports a joint venture between property developers See Hong Chen Group and EXSIM Group for the acquisition of freehold land in Johor Bahru. In a statement today, the bank said the mixed-use development has a projected gross development value of RM1.8 billion. OCBC is also financing See Hong Chen Group's purchase of additional freehold land parcels in Bandar Johor Bahru. "The JS-SEZ represents a significant opportunity for long-term economic growth," said OCBC managing director and wholesale banking head Jeffrey Teoh. "We're committed to going beyond traditional lending by delivering integrated financial solutions through our One Group capabilities," he added. The JS-SEZ, a flagship cross-border economic initiative, is expected to catalyse investment flows between Johor and Singapore, with connectivity boosted by the Rapid Transit System Link, which is slated for completion in 2026. See Hong Chen Group managing director See Cherng Jye said the developments aligned with the group's strategy to deliver impactful assets in growth zones. "This collaboration marks a significant milestone for us as we expand our footprint into Johor," said EXSIM managing director Lim Aik Hoe, adding that the projects are designed to meet evolving market and community needs. OCBC is the second-largest banking group by assets in Southeast Asia and is part of a wider financial ecosystem that includes Great Eastern, Bank of Singapore and asset manager Lion Global Investors.

Johor allocates RM1.5 million to upgrade KEMAS kindergartens, childcare centres
JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor government has allocated RM1.5 million to upgrade tabika (kindergartens) and taska (childcare centres) under the Community Development Department (KEMAS), in a move to strengthen early childhood education in the state. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the state government has also allocated RM1.8 million in basic religious allocation for the Iqra' and Fardu Ain (IQFA) programmes. He added that KEMAS kindergartens are now being positioned as feeder institutions for Sekolah Rintis Bangsa Johor (SRBJ). 'However, this requires curriculum harmonisation, including elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) - a transformation that will elevate Johor's preschool education to a higher and more competitive level,' he said in a Facebook post. Meanwhile, in another development, Onn Hafiz said the Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre (TMIYC) in Renggam, Kluang, is currently undergoing active development. 'I had the opportunity to review the development of TMIYC Renggam and engage with representatives from youth groups, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and local sports activists. 'This youth centre is being actively developed in line with the aspirations of the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, to ensure that every district has facilities that serve as spaces for building the character, leadership, and potential of Johor's youth,' he said, adding that so far, three TMIYCs are already in operation in the state.

PHOTO: THE BUSINESS TIMES Penang to start using durian tracking system to curb fraud, report says KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia's state of Penang has urged its durian growers to register for a tracking system to curb the spread of counterfeit versions of the prickly, pungent fruit from June 1, according to national news agency Bernama. The state plans to make the 'Track and Trace' system mandatory for its 200 durian farmers as it seeks to restore consumer confidence in the fruit, State Agrotechnology, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee's Fahmi Zainol was cited as saying. About 60 growers have committed to using the system, which involves tagging the durians with a QR code that, once scanned, allows each fruit to be traced back to its farm, he said. The plan came about after local growers complained about the misuse and misrepresentation of Penang durians, he added. The fruit, with its creamy-like flesh and powerful aroma, is popular in Malaysia and much of South-east Asia. Malaysia exports durians to countries including China, and expects outbound shipments to rise to RM1.8 billion (S$547.5 million) by 2030, according to a 2024 Bernama article.
