RCSI Bahrain sends nurses to Taiwan for training
Nursing students and faculty from Bahrain may soon gain hands-on training experience in Taiwan, as RCSI Medical University of Bahrain pushes ahead with an international exchange programme under a growing partnership with Taiwan's top nursing institution. Training Abroad The initiative follows a follow-up visit by a senior delegation from RCSI Bahrain to the National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences (NTUNHS) in April. The collaboration builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2024, and includes student clinical placements, joint research initiatives, and professional development programmes for faculty. Leading the delegation were Professor Kathryn Strachan, Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Dr Maryam Alaradi, Director of the BSc Nursing Programme. They reviewed NTUNHS's teaching facilities, including its simulation centre, and held discussions with senior Taiwanese academics to finalise the scope of collaboration. Global Exposure 'This visit represents a significant advancement in our strategic engagement with NTUNHS,' said Professor Strachan. 'We are particularly focused on enhancing academic and research exchange programmes that enrich both faculty expertise and student learning as well as exposure to international health systems outside the Middle East.' The delegation praised the quality of Taiwan's nursing education and its emphasis on student-centred learning, which they said closely aligns with RCSI Bahrain's approach. Diplomatic Support RCSI Bahrain also extended appreciation to H.E. Bob L.J. Chen, Representative of the Taipei Trade Office in Bahrain, and Vice Consul Shadin Lu for facilitating the visit. The institution noted that the partnership supports its mission to equip graduates with the clinical skills and cultural awareness to succeed in a globalised healthcare environment. Discussions are expected to continue as the two institutions move to activate student and faculty exchanges in the coming academic year.

RCSI Medical University of Bahrain Expands Research and Clinical Training Partnerships with Leading Academic and Healthcare Institutions in Thailand
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) – Medical University of Bahrain has taken a significant step in advancing its international outlook by formalising a new partnership with the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University in Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand, as part of its ongoing commitment to expanding international academic and clinical collaboration. On May 23rd, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, and Clinical Professor Artit Ungkanont, M.D., Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital. The agreement facilitates our students' participation in clinical and research electives across a broad range of medical specialities at Ramathibodi Hospital and opens the door to future collaboration in academia, exchange and joint initiatives. Professor Ungkanont, commented on the agreement: 'We believe that through this collaboration, both institutions will grow stronger—by learning from each other, sharing resources and supporting one another in the pursuit of global health equity and the development of future healthcare leaders.'This landmark agreement was part of a wider strategic visit to the Kingdom of Thailand, during which the University delegation also held high-level discussions with Associate Professor Dr Taveesin Tanprayoon, Chief Medical Officer, and Ms Artirat Charukitpipat, Chief Executive Officer of Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok. Discussions focused on establishing clinical elective opportunities in cardiology and exploring avenues for collaborative research in key areas such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases and genomics. Commenting on the significance of the partnership, Professor Otoom stated: 'The MoU with Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, and our productive discussion with leading healthcare institutions in Thailand represent an important milestone in our mission to provide world-class clinical and research opportunities for our students. These efforts reflect RCSI Medical University of Bahrain's commitment to academic excellence, global health engagement, and the advancement of medical education through strategic international alliances. These developments follow the recent visit of His Excellency Sumate Chulajata, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Kingdom of Bahrain, to the University campus. During that meeting, held earlier in May, the University outlined its intention to strengthen ties with Thai institutions through formal partnerships and mutual engagement. Further reinforcing this strategic direction, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain participated in the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) World Diabetes Congress 2025 in Thailand in April. A group of faculty and students contributed actively to scientific discussions and presented impactful research findings, highlighting the importance of regular ophthalmologic screening for pre-diabetic patients. Their research revealed that signs of diabetic retinopathy may be evident at HbA1c levels between 5.7% and 6.4%, a lower threshold than previously assumed. As RCSI Medical University of Bahrain continues to strengthen its network of global partners, the University remains focused on enhancing the academic experience and clinical training of its students, while fostering impactful research that addresses global health challenges.

US Ambassador affirms RCSI Medical University of Bahrain's role in advancing Medical and Academic partnerships with US
The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) – Medical University of Bahrain welcomed yesterday His Excellency Steven C. Bondy, U.S. Ambassador to Bahrain, and a delegation including Mr Nathanael Lynn, Chief of the Public Affairs Section, Ms Samar Hasan, Education Specialist, and Dr Fathima Nasmy, Physician, at its campus in Busaiteen. Welcoming the delegation, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, and members of the University's Executive Committee, provided a guided viewing of the University's New Academic Building currently under construction - a significant development set to enhance the student experience. The meeting commenced with an overview by Mr Stephen Harrison-Mirfield, Managing Director, detailing the University's history, relationship with partner hospitals and strategic direction. A key focus of the meeting was the University's robust academic and clinical collaborations with leading US universities and hospitals. Mr Fadi Ghosn, Head of Recognition, Careers & Alumni, provided details on student research and clinical electives through such partnerships with prestigious institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Tennessee Health Science Centre, Penn State College of Medicine and George Washington University. As a result of this collaboration, 224 graduates of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain — including 117 American nationals — are now practising in the United States, a testament to the University's rigorous international standards and worldclass training it provides. During the meeting, the delegation also explored potential federal funding opportunities for American nationals to study at the University, further expanding the collaboration between the University and U.S. institutions and demonstrating a shared commitment to advancing medical education and research. Steven C. Bondy, stated, 'Its partnerships with leading U.S. universities and hospitals are expanding opportunities for clinical training, research, and student exchange. These efforts deepen the educational ties between the United States and Bahrain while advancing global healthcare.' Commenting on the visit, Professor Otoom stated, 'RCSI Medical University of Bahrain extends its sincere thanks to His Excellency Steven C.
