Next-Gen Audi RS6 Won't Lose Its V8 Heart

But almost everything else will be new. Audi Won't Make The Mercedes Downsizing Mistake After the demise of the R8, most Audi enthusiasts tend to choose the RS6 Avant as the brand's most desirable model. It has epic looks, a monster V8, and the extra versatility of a station wagon body. But plans for a fully electric next-gen RS6 raised fears about this iconic model changing forever. Fortunately, Autocar has reported that a V8-powered RS6 isn't nearing extinction, as Audi will introduce both a fully electric one and a plug-in hybrid alternative in 2026. Audi would struggle to match or surpass that without electrification of some kind, which is why the next RS6 will get its own V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain. An output of 730 hp has been touted for this RS6, making it the most powerful RS6 ever. Although the finer details haven't yet been confirmed, Audi is expected to continue using a version of its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, developed by Porsche, but in updated form. The plug-in hybrid setup will include an electric motor mounted on the gearbox, something Porsche already makes use of. The continued use of the V8 will be literal music to the ears of RS6 fans; everyone knows how poorly received Mercedes-AMG's new C63 was when it lost its V8. While it will be more powerful, it's almost guaranteed that the new RS6 PHEV will be heavier, too. For instance, the new M5 Touring weighs around 5,500 lbs, but the extra power enables a 0-60 mph sprint of 3.5 seconds. That's the figure the new RS6 PHEV will aim to beat, and standard all-wheel drive should help the Audi accomplish just that. Previously, the brand planned to switch to EVs only from 2033, but the current management team realized the implications of switching over to a fully electric range before customers were ready for it. Instead, the goal is to offer multiple powertrain choices, even for niche models like the high-performance RS6. To that end, the next RS6 will also be available in fully electric form. The dual-motor setup is expected to yield in the vicinity of 670 hp and 701 lb-ft, but it won't step on the latest RS e-tron GT's toes, Audi's most powerful EV and production car. 'It's unlikely to reach as far as the RS e-tron GT, but there will be a solid increase over and above the S6 e-tron as part of the differentiation measures,' said an unnamed source when speaking to Autocar. A 94.8-kWh battery will be used, and like the RS6 PHEV, the EV will feature more aggressive bodywork, larger brakes, and a hefty price premium over lesser A6 models. We expect some styling elements to be shared with the S6 Sportback e-tron pictured above. For those missing the RS6 Sedan, this body style is also set to make a comeback, although it remains to be seen if it will be sold in the United States. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile

Audi delays ICE phaseout, to launch new petrol and hybrid cars till 2033 and beyond. Check details

Rather than phasing out combustion technology, Audi plans to launch a fresh generation of ICE and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) till 2026 (REUTERS) Check Offers Audi is hitting the brakes on its previously announced plan to phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) models by 2033. In a notable policy reversal, CEO Gernot Dollner has confirmed that the German luxury carmaker will now maintain production of combustion and plug-in hybrid vehicles well into the next decade, a report by Autocar UK stated. The move aligns Audi with a growing list of global automakers that are tempering their electric vehicle (EV) goals in favour of a more flexible, market-sensitive strategy. Dollner stated that the prior commitment to an all-EV future by 2033 was part of the 'past management's" roadmap and no longer reflects Audi's updated priorities. A new ICE and PHEV lineup Rather than phasing out combustion technology, Audi plans to launch a fresh generation of ICE and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) till 2026. This refreshed lineup, according to Dollner , provides the company with a flexible foundation for the next 7 to 10 years, allowing it to adapt according to market conditions and regulatory landscapes. Also Read : India-bound New-gen Audi Q3 makes global debut with Matrix LED tech, hybrid engines Among the vehicles in the pipeline is the next-generation RS6, which is expected to feature a high-performance plug-in hybrid setup. Dollner also hinted that Audi Sport's future products will continue to embrace combustion technology, especially in the RS badge portfolio. R8 and TT successors coming? On the possibility of reviving iconic nameplates like the R8 or TT, Dollner remained non-committal but optimistic. 'We are car guys, let yourself be surprised," he teased, while also noting it might be premature to disclose specific product plans. This leaves room for speculation about how Audi might reinterpret its performance lineage in a mixed powertrain future. No Small EVs—But A3-Sized Model on the Way Interestingly, Audi is stepping away from the small electric car race. It will not build its own version of the upcoming VW ID.2 or its Skoda counterparts aimed at the affordable EV segment. Instead, the brand is focused on a standalone A3-sized EV, which is currently under development and scheduled to debut in 2026. As the A1 and Q2 are phased out, the A3 and Q3 will serve as Audi's new entry-level offerings. Also Read : Audi Q5 and Q5 Sportback PHEV drivetrains launched. Will it come to India? Audi to Lead VW Group's Next-Gen Tech Platforms Audi's future role within the Volkswagen Group is also evolving. The brand has been tasked with leading development of the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), a next-generation hardware and software architecture for large vehicles. Originally conceived as a purely EV platform, SSP has since been redesigned to accommodate range-extender and hybrid options as well—aligning with the Group's more general dedication to a multi-pathway approach. No End In Sight For Audi ICE Cars After CEO's U-Turn

A few years ago, Audi said it would stop selling gas-powered cars in 2033. At that point, many major automakers had set plans in motion for their own discontinuation of gas models, but many have realized this move was a bit premature. Audi's CEO has now confirmed that the German brand is backtracking on the 2033 decision. Instead, it will keep developing new ICE models for the foreseeable future, with no definite date at which ICE models will cease development. Gernot Döllner, Audi CEO since 2023, told Autocar that he "had not been the one to communicate the end date" of the brand developing new ICE models; rather, this was a decision taken by previous management. Explaining why he changed the brand's strategy, Dollner said he "believes in flexibility" when it comes to powertrains. "Audi is launching from 2024-2026 a completely new line-up of internal combustion engine and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and that gives us complete flexibility for at least another seven, eight, maybe 10 years, and then we will see how our markets develop. We have already decided to extend the production beyond the communicated end dates of the past." This will be music to the ears of Audi enthusiasts, especially fans of the brand's high-performance RS division. While models like the RS e-tron are exceptionally quick, they can't match the emotional qualities of an RS6 or RS7 with their V8 power plants. Döllner made some interesting statements about Audi's Formula 1 team, saying this team would "inspire us to think about road cars of the future." Asked specifically about the return of the TT sports car and R8 supercar, he said the company was "thinking about everything… we are car guys, let yourself be surprised. There is room for Audi in such fields. We are evaluating different options but it's a little too early to talk about that." This is not the first time Döllner seemed keen for a TT revival. And, while rumors of a new, all-electric R8 were swirling a few years ago, that came before Dollner's statement that Audi will continue developing gas engines. In light of this, a new gas-powered R8 isn't entirely off the table, but it will likely feature some level of hybridization. While some enthusiast brands like Jaguar are going all-in on an electric future, we're pleased to see that Audi has been willing to change course. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. Deputy President Paul Mashatile withstood intense interrogation

Deputy President Paul Mashatile told the National Assembly on 12 June 2025 that small-scale farmers still struggle to obtain credit due to the lack of title deeds, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, and Limpopo. He says the government granted R500 million and 44 000 hectares for land redistribution in the 2025–2026 fiscal year. This is in line with the numbers in the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development's 2025 budget vote. Some parliament members say progress is still slow because of bureaucratic and legal delays. Mashatile, head of the Justice, Crime Prevention, and Security (JCPS) Cluster, says Operation Shanela has led to 13 000 arrests. The operation ran from 17 to 23 March 2025. The programme's main goal is to stop gang violence in places like the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Stats SA Q1 2025 data shows youth unemployment at 45.5 percent, further pushing gang recruitment. Security experts at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) Africa say we can't stop crime without dealing with poverty and gaps in education. Mashatile attested to 105 municipalities' poor water supply performance. The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) sends engineers to keep an eye on failing projects. Theft, leaks, and billing errors cause water losses of up to 50% in some metros, according to the DWS 2025 performance report. Outdated water infrastructure in places like Emfuleni, which has not been updated in over 40 years, has led to over R17 billion in debt owed to water boards and growing public discontent. Deputy President Paulus Mashatile warned that the United States' withdrawal from the PEPFAR would leave South Africa with an annual R8 million shortfall. He said domestic resources will secure antiretroviral (ARV) medications for the next two years. The South African National AIDS Council's (SANAC's) 'Close the Gap' campaign aimed to place 1.1 million people on antiretroviral treatment by 2025. However, groups like Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) warn that without ongoing funding, most vulnerable patients face serious risks.
