Aurora residents hungry for grocery store in growing Murphy Creek neighborhood

Aurora is now the third-largest city in Colorado, and it's still growing. As more people move into rapidly expanding communities like Aurora Highlands and Murphy Creek, many find themselves facing an unexpected challenge, which is getting groceries. Murphy Creek has a quiet neighborhood built around a golf course, offering a scenic and active lifestyle. For longtime resident Gretchen Dirks, moving to the eastern plains of Aurora back in 2007 was a dream come true. The Murphy Creek neighborhood in Aurora. CBS "I wanted a house. I wanted a yard. I wanted to be able to enjoy being outside with my dogs," Dirks said. "Murphy Creek is a unique place because it's a golf course community. It just has this really cool feel. It's an outdoorsy feel. People are active." Basic retail is one thing that is missing in the suburb, and most importantly, a grocery store. Aurora City Councilman Steve Sundberg is working to solve that issue. As a Murphy Creek resident himself since 2003, he understands the frustration. "People are, quote, unquote, hungry for a grocery store," Sundberg said. "It's probably an 8-mile drive to a grocery store. And Southlands to the south is probably a good 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic." According to Sundberg, grocery chains like Safeway and Walmart previously considered building in the area, but both companies backed out. However, he remains optimistic that change is coming. There are a few signs of progress. A QuikTrip gas station and convenience store are set to open soon at the Lamar Landing development on 6th Avenue and Gun Club Road, giving the community its third fuel and snack option. If fully realized, Aurora One would be the first major retail hub in East Aurora, and it would finally include a full grocery store. "The good news is retail and grocery are coming. The difficult news is it's taking a while," Sundberg explained. Delays related to storm drainage, permitting, and other infrastructure issues have slowed the project's momentum. But if everything moves forward, Sundberg says retail signings could begin by the end of the year, with construction potentially wrapping up by late 2026. Until then, Murphy Creek residents will have to continue traveling miles just to pick up a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread. A reality city leaders hope won't last much longer.

Brazen teens loot store amid parking lot boxing match between two women

More than 50 youths looted an Arizona gas station convenience store after a brazen brawl broke out in the parking lot. A massive crowd swarmed the parking lot of the QuikTrip gas station in Surprise to watch as two unidentified women engaged in a full-on boxing match, surveillance video obtained by the Daily Mail reveals. The women threw punches back and forth, seemingly trying to take each other to the ground, as the jeering crowd circled around and recorded the chaos on their phones. A white pick-up truck, likely at the scene to utilize the station's services, slowly drives through the unnoticing crowd as they remain fully engaged in the fight. The clip cuts to a view from inside the shop, where the youths snatched alcohol right out of the coolers, before running outside without paying. A store attendant tries to intervene and appears to plead with the group - but they blatantly ignore him and continue their looting mission. The video, once again, cuts back outside where the teens are seen fleeing through the parking lot on foot with the stolen goods in tow. Others piled into cars before speeding off the premises. The brawl broke out in sprawling Phoenix suburb Saturday night at a gas station near Loop 303 and Bell Road in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police said more than 50 people 'engaged in disorderly conduct and looting of a convenience store'. Investigators allege the 'reckless criminal behavior' by the group 'directly interfered with access to a nearby hospital, affecting patients needing emergency medical care'. They did not disclose what specific products were snatched from the store, though the surveillance footage shows the group grabbing alcoholic beverages out of the coolers. Some teens were heard making 'politically motivated comments', police told ABC 15, but did not disclose what specifically was said. Police added it is 'unknown' if the incident was related to the No Kings protest that took place earlier that day. Business resumed as usual at the QuikTrip later that day, FOX 10 reports. Meanwhile, police have asked for the 'community's assistance in identifying the individuals involved'. The Surprise Police Department says it has a 'zero tolerance for criminal activity' and is actively investigating the incident. 'We will use every available resource, including surveillance footage, witness statements, and digital evidence, to identify, arrest, and prosecute all individuals involved to the fullest extent of the law,' the force said in a statement. 'The safety of our community is our top priority. We stand with our local businesses, our healthcare providers, and every resident of Surprise who deserves to live in a safe, peaceful city.' Anyone with details about the crime is encouraged to contact the Surprise Police Department at 623-222-TIPS (8477) or via email at crimetips@ The incident came just hours after No Kings protests swept across the country on Saturday, with organizers saying millions rallied against what they described as President Donald Trump's authoritarian tendencies. Confrontations were largely isolated. An innocent bystander was shot in Utah after a man brandished a rifle during the rally. He later died from his injuries. In Riverside, California, authorities said a driver of an SUV struck a woman who was participating in a demonstration and sped away. The woman had 'significant injuries' but was stable, police said, adding that they were still searching for the driver. Outside the Arizona statehouse, a social media video showed protesters Saturday jeering at and then skirmishing with a masked man, who eventually pulled out a handgun, causing the crowd to scatter. Another video showed Arizona Department of Public Safety officers taking the man into custody.

Lottery player wins $10 million jackpot on ticket sold in Georgia. Here's where

A gas station customer decided to splurge on a scratch-off lottery ticket — and ended up hitting a $10 million jackpot in Georgia. A resident of Cartersville beat the 1-in-4,014,000 odds to win a $10 million top prize in the 500X The Money game, the Georgia Lottery announced June 9. The player bought their $50 lucky ticket at a local QuikTrip convenience store in the outskirts of the Atlanta metropolitan area, officials said. The player claimed their winnings May 27 as a cash sum of $5,200,629, according to lottery officials. Two out of four top prizes remain in the game, which debuted in March 2024, records show. Cartersville, in Bartow County, is about a 45-mile drive northwest from downtown Atlanta.

Wichita player quietly claims $1M lottery prize

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Someone in Wichita is kicking off summer $1 million richer. The winner of the Kansas Lottery's Holiday Millionaire Raffle quietly claimed their $1 million prize in late May—months after the winning numbers were announced in January. The ticket was sold at the QuikTrip at 1620 S. Webb Rd. The winner has chosen to remain anonymous. Should Evergy raise costs for Kansas customers? They're not the only Kansan hitting it big. A $1 million Powerball ticket was recently claimed in Salina. That ticket was sold at Casey's General Store at 1100 E. Iron Ave. Like the Wichita winner, the Salina player is staying out of the spotlight. The Kansas Lottery says both wins are part of a recent streak of major prizes across the state, including several $20,000 Lotto America winners in May. For more Kansas news, click here.
