US-Qatar ties have gone beyond traditional alliances: Timmy Davis
Hanane Djoua Doha US Ambassador to Qatar HE Timmy Davis has emphasised that US-Qatar ties have now gone far beyond traditional alliances. 'This relationship is mature. We're not just partners — we're close friends. And that gives us the power to do something rare: to act together for good,' said the outgoing US ambassador during his farewell briefing on Wednesday. With heartfelt words, moments of reflection, and no shortage of gratitude, Davis delivered his final remarks in Qatar — a country that, over the last three years, he said, has come to feel like home. 'I am the luckiest ambassador in the world,' the US envoy told journalists. 'We've seen the highs and lows of this region together — from the triumph of the World Cup to the tragedy in Gaza. But through it all, Qatar has stood tall, and our partnership has grown stronger.' Much of his speech centered on the ongoing war in Gaza, and Qatar's critical role in mediation efforts. 'We are working to reach a ceasefire, to ease the suffering, and to bring peace to both sides. And we are doing it — as always — with Qatar,' he added. The US ambassador shared one of his most memorable moments: standing on the tarmac as American detainees returned from Iran — a release made possible by Qatar's mediation. 'One of the men came off the plane, walked up to me, and asked, 'Are you the US ambassador?' I said yes. He replied, 'Can I give you a hug?'' It was, he said, a defining moment. 'That hug reminded me that this relationship is not just about diplomacy or trade. It's about real people. It's about changing lives together.' Davis urged both nations to move beyond reacting to crises and begin working to prevent them. 'There's space in this world for two good friends like the US and Qatar to look ahead — to spot problems before they spiral, and to use our shared expertise and values to stop them in their tracks.' He spoke with admiration about Qatar's humanitarian work through the Qatar Fund for Development, calling it 'utterly impressive,' and said the US should deepen coordination in that space. While his message was filled with optimism, Davis didn't hide how hard it was to say goodbye. 'Qatar has begun to feel like home,' he said He offered sincere advice to his yet-to-be-named successor: 'Go to weddings. Attend funerals. Be present in moments that matter. Be proud of representing the US, but always remember that the job is to make this relationship meaningful for both sides.' Davis also took time to thank the journalists present — and the local press corps at large — for their integrity and professionalism. 'You've done your jobs with enthusiasm for truth and perspective,' he said. 'I've watched you ask tough questions. You've made space for transparency and accountability. Any one of you could walk into Northwestern University in Education City — one of the best journalism schools in the US — and teach a class on what journalism should be.' From the rise of AI and data centers to entrepreneurship and the mobility of the labour market, Davis said the press can be the guiding force that shows people 'the ember that could become a flame.' 'There are young people out there with dreams — dreams they may not yet believe are possible. The media can help them believe.' Davis called the recent visit of US President Donald Trump to Qatar 'an utter success,' not only because of the $243 billion in agreements signed, but because of the long-term vision: a possible $1.2 trillion in bilateral trade over the next decade. 'This isn't just about numbers,' he said. 'It's about shared prosperity, shared security, and shared purpose.' As his time in Doha came to a close, Davis was reflective but hopeful. 'It's so hard to pick just one moment that stands out,' he said. 'Because every step of the way, we were building something meaningful.' His parting message wasn't just to diplomats or government officials — but to all who call Qatar home. 'We've built something special. Now it's someone else's turn to carry the baton. But I hope this isn't goodbye — just the beginning of a new chapter.'

Qatar Scholarship – Education Above All Program at AUB Celebrates the Graduation of 93 Students
The Qatar Scholarship – Education Above All Program at the American University of Beirut (AUB) marked a significant milestone with the graduation of its final cohort of 93 students. The occasion was celebrated in a graduation and closing ceremony that marked the program's completion and honoring the remarkable achievements of its scholars. The event brought together senior university leadership and faculty members, including Dr. Fadlo Khuri, AUB president, alongside distinguished guests such as His Excellency Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, ambassador of the State of Qatar to Lebanon; Dr. Rima Karami, minister of education and higher education in Lebanon; Acting CEO of the Education Above All Foundation Mohammed Al-Kubaisi; and senior representatives from the Qatar Embassy in Lebanon and the Education Above All Foundation. Launched in 2021, the Qatar Scholarship – EAA Program at AUB was established to expand access to quality higher education for 316 Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian students. It provided scholarships to Lebanese youth, as well as Palestinian and Syrian refugees living in Lebanon. In his opening remarks, AUB President Fadlo Khuri highlighted the profound community that grew out of the program, one that extends beyond academics to build meaningful human connections. 'This program was launched as a bridge, an opportunity for bright, determined students to access higher education,' he said. 'You have made it into something more: a vibrant, diverse community at AUB, built on shared challenges, solid friendships, and a sense of belonging that extends far beyond any classroom.' Khuri added, 'Thanks to the support of the Education Above All Foundation and the Qatar Fund for Development, hundreds of students have gained access to a world-class education at AUB, alongside civic engagement, global networks, and the mentorship needed to prosper. This partnership does not just fund education, it changes lives.' His Excellency Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani praised the Education Above All Foundation for its pioneering role in empowering youth and promoting inclusive, high-quality education. He acknowledged the vital contribution of the Qatar Fund for Development and the strong collaboration with AUB. 'This initiative reflects the State of Qatar's unwavering commitment to supporting students on their educational journey,' he said. 'It reaffirms our belief in education as the cornerstone of cohesive societies and a key pillar of sustainable development. We are proud to stand with these young people as they build their futures.' Acting CEO of Education Above All Foundation Mohammed Al-Kubaisi emphasized the deeper mission of the program and its lasting impact. 'The Qatar Scholarship Program is not just an academic opportunity; it is a vital source of hope, a catalyst for empowerment, and a springboard for youth to reclaim their futures,' he said. Al-Kubaisi added, 'We have not only supported these students through graduation, but also helped equip them to give back, engage civically, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. We are deeply proud of our graduates and grateful to our partners for ensuring that education continues to be a pillar of hope, justice, and sustainable development.' Dr. Joseph Costantine, director of the scholarship program, reflected on the journey of the past four years, comparing it to a ship that has now reached its harbor. 'This ship, this scholarship, started its maiden voyage in August 2021, when hope in Lebanon was scarce and faith in a bright future was lacking,' he said. 'This scholarship is beyond financial support; it is a belief, a trust, a fuel for potential, connection, and engagement. We are deeply grateful to the State of Qatar, Education Above All Foundation, Qatar Fund for Development, and Qatar Foundation, all of whom made this journey feasible.' A highlight of the ceremony was the ACE Talks Improv Public Speaking Competition, where computer science students Angela Sobhiyeh and Mona Jamal, along with environmental health student Christa Maria Bou Raad, and mechanical engineering student Ghina Sharif, took to the stage with improvised speeches in response to a prompt announced during the ceremony. Angela Sobhiyeh won the competition following a live vote by the guests of honor and audience. As part of the celebration, the program's annual distinction awards were presented to recognize outstanding student achievements. Racha Saad received the Highest GPA Award, while Cecilia Bakalian was honored with the Qatar Connection Engagement Award. The Remarkable Civic Engagement Award was presented to Zeinab Halima for her impactful community involvement. Additionally, Malak Mehrez, Wael Kheil, and Ada Al Kotob were awarded the Scholarship Engagement Award in recognition of their exceptional participation in scholarship-led activities. Attendees were also treated to two captivating musical performances by the Zaki Nassif Music Program at AUB. The ensemble's dynamic and heartfelt renditions added a rich cultural dimension to the event, enchanting the audience and enhancing the celebratory atmosphere. The ceremony concluded with a student procession and a commemorative group photo, capturing the pride and promise of a program that has transformed lives and shaped futures.

Launched in 2021, the Qatar Scholarship, in partnership with EAA/AUB, aims to provide 316 exceptional students from vulnerable communities in Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria with undergraduate degrees at one of the region's most prestigious institutions. The graduating students represent a diverse cohort of ambitious youth who have overcome significant socioeconomic and political challenges to pursue their academic and personal aspirations. Their achievements reflect the core values of EAA Foundation's Al Fakhoora programme, resilience, excellence, and the transformative power of education. 'The Qatar Scholarship Programme was more than an academic pathway — it was a lifeline, and a platform for youth to reclaim their futures,' said Mohammed Al Kubaisi, acting CEO of Education Above All Foundation. EAA Foundation & UNDP sign agreement for phase 2 of ‘Rebuilding Hope for Gaza' project
Tribune News Network Doha The Education Above All (EAA) Foundation, a global foundation for education and development, has signed a historic agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to ensure the continuity of education for 90,000 high school students in Gaza through the successful administration of electronic General Secondary Examinations (Tawjihi). The agreement, which is supported by the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), constitutes Phase Two of EAA Foundation's flagship initiative, Rebuilding Hope for Gaza, which was initiated in December 2023 as a response to the Gaza conflict. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Palestinian Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Amjad Saad Suleiman Barham, Director-General of the Qatar Fund for Development Fahad Al Sulaiti, Acting CEO, Education Above All Foundation Mohammed Al Kubaisi, Special Representative for the Administrator (UNDP) Chitose Noguchi, Programmes Portfolio Manager, UNDP Moataz Dawabsheh, Education Portfolio Manager for Gaza, Ministry of Education and Higher Education Palestine Ali Nairat. As part of the agreement, EAA Foundation and its partners, including UNDP, and with support from QFFD, will provide 100 completely furnished educational spaces with dependable internet and steady power supplies. Safe digital testing platforms will be established as part of the project. In order to facilitate online exams even in the context of the current crisis, the project is complemented by the provision of 10,000 tablets to students in need through donation from Heal Palestine and the Palestinian American Medical Association (PAMA) and the Ministry of Education Partners. A total of 30,000 students will receive structured academic support through remedial classes, practice tests, and orientation workshops. Psychosocial support services will also be provided to improve mental health and resilience. The project, which spans this year and the next, uses five exam cycles to target the Tawjihi cohorts. These centres will develop into long-term digital learning hubs thanks to a sustainability plan, which will promote Gaza's long-term educational recovery. Barham expressed his gratitude, saying: 'We extend our deep appreciation to Education Above All Foundation for their vital support, which ensures the readiness to conduct Tawjihi exams for Gaza's students from the cohorts, should the conditions allow. 'The ministry is committed to enabling both current and past Tawjihi students to sit for their exams in suitable conditions, backed by necessary technical and logistical requirements. We also thank UNDP for its continuous support to the education sector in Palestine, and for its crucial interventions, particularly in Gaza.' Speaking about the agreement, Al Kubaisi, acting CEO of EAA Foundation, said: 'This agreement represents a pivotal moment in our collective commitment to rebuilding hope and creating sustainable change in crisis-affected communities. It stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of those who have endured immense hardship. 'We are honoured to continue our partnership with UNDP, whose expertise and dedication align with our mission, with support from our strategic partner the QFFD, we are able us to empower individuals, uplift communities, and restore opportunities for future generations. The Al Fakhoora programme alone has awarded over 10,500 higher education scholarships, with a primary focus on Gaza. This new phase will further strengthen our reach and help us write new chapters of opportunity for all.' During her remarks, Chitose Noguchi, special representative of the Administrator of UNDP/PAPP a.i., said: 'Through this partnership with the Palestine Ministry of Education and Education Above All Foundation, we are not only helping students in Gaza reach a crucial academic milestone, but we are also building the foundation for a more inclusive, connected, and resilient education system under tremendous challenges. By transforming temporary exam centres into permanent digital learning hubs, we are ensuring that the hope and opportunity we create today will continue to empower Gaza's students for years to come.' To date, EAA Foundation has supported more than 22 million beneficiaries in accessing their right to education. The foundation works in more than 60 countries through a network exceeding 100 partners. In conflict areas alone, EAA Foundation has supported more than seven million beneficiaries and advocates for the protection of education from armed attacks.
