Qatar Basketball Federation unveils 2025 calendar
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has revealed its event calendar for 2025, which features a range of camps and both official and friendly participations for national teams. The initiative is part of a broader strategy designed to improve the technical preparedness of players and to broaden their international exposure in anticipation of forthcoming continental and global competitions. The Qatar men's national team 'A' will commence its training for the FIBA Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 5 to 17, 2025. Preparations will include an external training camp in Turkey, set to occur from June 18 to July 3, 2025. This camp will focus on intensive training overseen by the technical staff, along with friendly matches aimed at enhancing both physical and tactical fitness. The tournament draw has placed the Qatari national team in Group A, alongside Australia, Lebanon, and South Korea, a grouping that observers have characterized as formidable. This presents additional challenges for the Qatari team as they strive to advance to the knockout stage. The winners of the group will qualify directly for the quarter-finals, while the teams finishing in second and third place will compete in playoffs to secure the remaining positions. The team will further its preparations in Doha from July 8 to 14, 2025, during which they will engage in friendly matches against Asian teams, before traveling to South Korea for a training camp from July 16 to 21, 2025. This camp will feature a series of friendly matches from July 18 to 20, offering valuable experience in competing against advanced Asian teams. Additionally, QBF has announced the hosting of an international friendly tournament at the Lusail Multipurpose Hall from July 25 to August 1, 2025, which will include the national teams of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Japan. This tournament will provide the technical staff with an additional chance to evaluate their final preparedness prior to competing in the Asian Cup. Qatar's men's national team 'B' is also gearing up to take part in the esteemed William Jones Cup, organized by the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association (CTBA) from July 12 to 20, 2025. The team will commence its participation with an internal training camp in Doha until July 10, which will encompass physical and technical assessments to finalize the roster. The William Jones Cup is recognized as one of the oldest unofficial international basketball tournaments, with its inaugural edition launched in 1977. Named in honor of the late FIBA founder, Renato William Jones, the tournament includes national teams and university clubs from across the globe, serving as an excellent platform for interaction and performance enhancement. The B team will also compete in the Arab Youth Championship, scheduled to take place in Nabeul, Tunisia, from July 23 to August 3, 2025, aimed at elevating the level of competition and acquiring further continental experience. At the youth level, the Qatari U-16 team is preparing to participate in the Gulf Cooperation Council U-16 Championship, hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain from July 7 to 13, 2025, which will serve as a qualifier for the AFC U-16 Asian Cup Finals, set to occur in Mongolia next September. On the occasion, Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, Secretary-General of Qatar Basketball Federation, and Director of National Teams, stated: 'We are heading into an exceptional year of work and preparation, which requires great cooperation from everyone: administrators, players, and the technical staff, to achieve our desired goals. We have developed a comprehensive plan for the national teams of all categories, ensuring the highest levels of readiness through external training camps and participation in specialized tournaments. The men's team's participation in the Asian Cup in Jeddah represents a crucial milestone, and we are confident in our players' abilities to perform to an honorable standard.' Al Kuwari added: 'Our participation in the historic William Jones Tournament and friendly tournaments also confirms our commitment to creating an optimal environment for interaction and development. We also pay special attention to the age groups, and we view the Gulf Junior Championship as an important gateway to emerging on the Asian stage. We are working to create a new generation of players who will represent the future of the game in Qatar.' Qatar's national 3x3 basketball teams make quantum leap in world rankings
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar national 3x3 basketball team achieved a significant milestone in the FIBA world rankings rising to 18th place with a total of 1,131,976 points, moving up from 23rd and surpassing teams such as Poland, New Zealand, Canada, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, the Philippines, and Australia. Meanwhile, the QatarU-23 3x3 national team has made a remarkable leap of 19 places to secure the fifth position in the world with 832,921 points, outpacing established teams like China, Japan, Latvia, Algeria, the Netherlands, and Italy, thus achieving its highest ranking to date, previously being ranked 24th. The impressive progress is indicative of the extensive efforts being made by the Qatari sports system, particularly by the Qatar Basketball Federation. This advancement is a direct result of the strong performances exhibited by both teams in various international tournaments, which have played a crucial role in elevating their global standings and solidifying their status among the elite teams worldwide. This notable improvement in the rankings of the Qatar basketball teams also signifies that the sport is on the brink of a new era of excellence, amidst widespread aspirations for further accomplishments in future events. This will bolster Qatar's presence in international arenas and actualize the national vision towards a sustainable sporting culture rooted in competition, passion, and achievement. The Qatar U-23 3x3 national team has firmly positioned itself on the continental stage, having won the third and sixth stages of the FIBA 3x3 Nations League - Asia-Pacific, which was hosted by the Qatar Basketball Federation in Doha from May 28 to June 3, featuring 12 of the world's leading teams. Qatar amassed 520 points during these competitions, securing victories in two stages and finishing as runners-up in the first, second, and fourth stages. This achievement places them in a favorable position to qualify for the World Championships set to take place in Xiong'an, China, from September 17 to 21, pending the conclusion of the remaining continental qualifiers. QBF President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb expressed his great pride in the achievement, stressing that this accomplishment is the result of long-term planning and continuous efforts from everyone. He said: 'We are very proud of this advancement in the world rankings, as it reflects the hard work undertaken by the national team at all levels. We faced difficult challenges and achieved positive results that helped us improve our ranking. This unprecedented position is a major morale boost and confirms that Qatar basketball is heading in the right direction. On this occasion, I can only extend my thanks and gratitude to His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, for his continuous support and constant interest in the sport of basketball.' More than just a game: Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA Qatar League matches empower local youth
Tribune News Network Doha The second season of the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Qatar League has come to a thrilling close, helping students from across the country to grow their basketball skills while building key skills and values such as teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and resilience. This year's league—organised by Qatar Foundation (QF) in collaboration with the NBA, and supported by the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF)—featured 68 teams, each representing an NBA team, across four categories and welcomed more than 1,000 students, doubling participation from its first season. The U12 Girls title was claimed by the Qatar Basketball Federation (Philadelphia 76ers), with Pro Sports (Brooklyn Nets), finishing in second place. In the U12 Boys category, the Movement Camp (Minnesota Timberwolves), were crowned champions, while QF Awsaj (Indiana Pacers) took second place. The U14 Girls champions were the Qatar Basketball Federation (San Antonio Spurs), with QF Awsaj (Minnesota Timberwolves) securing second. In the U14 Boys division, the Qatar Basketball Federation (Dallas Mavericks) claimed the title, with Evolution Sports (Orlando Magic) taking home second place. All basketball action took place across two venues: QF's Multaqa (Education City Student Centre) and the QBF. Kholoud M. Al-Ali, executive director of Community Engagement and Programming at Qatar Foundation Communication Initiatives, said: 'The growth of the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Qatar League this year has been truly inspiring, with participation more than doubling since last season. This reflects the increasing passion for basketball among our youth. 'Every match has showcased not only excitement and teamwork, but also a deep love for the game. Seeing the enthusiasm and dedication of these young athletes is a powerful reminder of how sport can unite communities and inspire future generations. Qatar win Stage 6 as FIBA U23 3x3 Nations League – Asia-Pacific concludes
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar men's national basketball team triumphed in Stage 6 of the FIBA U23 3x3 Nations League - Asia-Pacific which concluded on Tuesday at the Federation Hall at Al Gharafa. Besides hosts Qatar, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chinese Taipei were part of the tournament with six teams competing in each category. Qatar men's team secured the championship with a thrilling 17-14 victory in the final over New Zealand, marking a remarkable journey through the tournament, having previously defeated Chinese Taipei (21-9) and Indonesia (21-14) in the initial round. The accomplishment took Qatar team's score to 520 points, achieved by winning the third and sixth rounds and finishing second in the first, second, and fourth rounds. This progress brings the team closer to qualifying for the World Championships, which are set to take place in Xiong'an, China, from September 17 to 21, while other continental qualifiers await the conclusion of their respective qualifying rounds. New Zealand secured second place in the sixth round after reaching the final by overcoming the Philippines (18-16) and Singapore (21-19). The Kiwis accumulated 560 points, having won the first, second, fourth, and fifth rounds, while finishing second in the third and sixth rounds. The Philippines claimed third place with 420 points, followed by Singapore with 325 points, Chinese Taipei with 305 points, and Indonesia with 300 points. The Qatar men's national team comprised Hamad Yassin Ismail Musa, Zeineddine Badri, Nizar Mahmoud, Ahmed Saeed Mohammed, and Mubarak Jama. In the women's competition, New Zealand secured victory in the sixth round by defeating Chinese Taipei in the final 21-19, taking their total points to 480, placing them in second position. The Philippines led the overall standings with 530 points, while Chinese Taipei followed in third place with 480 points, Singapore ranked fourth with 360 points, Indonesia was fifth with 310 points, and the Qatari national team rounded out the standings in sixth place with 270 points. The tournament was graced by the presence ofMohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb, President of Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF); His Excellency Timmy Davis, Ambassador of the United States of America to the State of Qatar; Captain Yassin Ismail, Director of the 3x3 Committee at the Federation; Talal Saad Al Mughaiseeb, Tournament Director; along with several officials and guests of the tournament. At the conclusion of the event, Al Mughaiseeb and His Excellency the US Ambassador presented the champions of the sixth stage, the Qatar men's and New Zealand women's national teams, with their awards. Additionally, the New Zealand men's and Philippines women's national teams were recognized for their achievements in leading the overall standings and officially qualifying for the World Championship. FIBA U23 3x3 Nations League: Qatar runners-up in 5th stage
Tribune News Network Doha The national basketball team of Qatar finished second in the fifth stage of the FIBA U23 3x3 Nations League - Asia-Pacific. The tournament is being hosted by the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) from May 28 to June 3, 2025, and includes top-tier international teams in both the men's and women's categories. A total of twelve teams are competing in the tournament, comprising six men's teams and six women's teams: Qatar (the host), New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chinese Taipei. The Qatari national team advanced to the final of the fifth round after triumphing over the Philippines (22-18) and Indonesia (21-8) in the Group A games. In the final, the Qatari national team narrowly lost to New Zealand (17-18) in overtime following a 16-16 tie at the end of regulation time. The game was played on Monday evening, June 2, 2025, at the Etihad Hall in Al Gharafa. New Zealand reached the final defeating Chinese Taipei (21-7) and Singapore (21-9) in the Group B matches. The fifth round games were attended by QBF President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb, QBF Secretary-General Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, along with members of the Board of Directors. The Qatar men's team comprises Hamad Yassin Ismail Musa, Zainuddin Badri, Nizar Mahmoud, Ahmed Saeed Mohammed, and Mubarak Jama. Jassim Ashkanani, Director of the Qatar National Basketball Team, crowned the New Zealand team as the champions of the fifth stage. In the women's competition, the Philippines national team took first place after defeating Chinese Taipei in the final match, 21-14, earning 460 points. Chinese Taipei came in second with 400 points. Talal Saad Al Maghseeb, tournament director, crowned the Philippines national team as the champion of the fifth round. The curtain falls on event with the sixth and final round.
