Qatar reiterates firm support for Syria's unity, sovereignty

QNA Doha Qatar has reiterated its firm and supportive stances on the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic, as well as on the realisation of the aspirations of its fraternal people for a dignified life and the building of a state of institutions and law. This came as Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani received a high-level Syrian ministerial delegation headed by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Arab Republic HE Asaad Hassan Al Shaibani, accompanied by seven ministers, in Doha on Tuesday. The visit comes within the framework of strengthening the solid fraternal relations and bilateral cooperation between the two countries. At the outset of the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates conveyed the greetings of President of the Syrian Arab Republic HE Ahmed Al Sharaa to His Highness the Amir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and his wishes for the State of Qatar, its government, and people, continued progress and prosperity. The Syrian minister also expressed Syria's deep appreciation for the State of Qatar's initiatives and continuous efforts in support of the reconstruction process in Syria, praising Qatar's firm stances toward supporting the Syrian people. In turn, the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs conveyed the greetings of HH the Amir to the president of the Syrian Arab Republic, and His Highness' wishes for continued health and happiness for His Excellency, and for continued progress and prosperity for the government and people of the Syrian Arab Republic. The meeting discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries, emphasising the depth of fraternal ties that unite them and their mutual commitment to strengthening and developing cooperation in various areas of common interest. The meeting also discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation in the energy, economy, trade, finance, tourism, communications, information technology, higher education, development, and other sectors, including: • Support and supply the Syrian Arab Republic with electricity. • Settling the Syrian Arab Republic's debt to the World Bank, jointly by the State of Qatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. • Providing joint financial support from the State of Qatar and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to support the salaries of public sector workers in the Syrian Arab Republic for a period of three months. The Qatari side reiterated the State of Qatar's firm and supportive stances on the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic, as well as on the realization of the aspirations of its fraternal people for a dignified life and the building of a state of institutions and law. It also categorically rejected any attempts to undermine Syria's unity or undermine its national sovereignty. For its part, the Syrian side affirmed its pride in the State of Qatar's supportive stance towards the Syrian people, praising its supportive role at various stages and reiterating the Syrian Arab Republic's commitment to the principles of respecting the sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs.

QNA Doha Qatar is strengthening its global role in addressing growing environmental challenges, most notably plastic pollution, and strongly supports the path to sustainable development, Minister of Environment and Climate Change HE Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie has affirmed. He pointed out that World Environment Day represents an important international occasion to renew collective commitment to protecting planet Earth and promoting the concept of environmental sustainability. In press statements on the occasion of World Environment Day, which is observed on June 5, the minister said the theme of this year, 'Putting an End to Plastic Pollution', reflects the importance of unifying international efforts to combat this phenomenon, calling for a just international agreement aimed at reducing plastic pollution, taking into account the circumstances of developing countries and their rights to development. He pointed out that the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change is implementing a package of policies and initiatives to reduce plastic pollution, as part of its commitment to the principles of sustainable development and achieving a better environmental quality of life for current and future generations. The ministry is also continuing its efforts regionally and internationally in compliance with multilateral environmental agreements, he noted. 'Qatar is working on developing an infrastructure that supports recycling operations by sorting waste at the source, collecting it, processing it, and converting it into reusable products, with the goal of reducing dependence on natural resources and enhancing their efficient use,' he added. Dr. Al Subaie also pointed out that the ministry launched several initiatives in this regard, including encouraging investment in the establishment of specialised recycling centres and developing legislative and regulatory frameworks to ensure the sustainability of these operations, in cooperation with various government and private entities. He highlighted Qatar's active participation in the sessions of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) for a legally binding international instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, pointing out that Qatar presented its vision at the fifth session held in 2024 in Busan, South Korea, during a side event on ending plastic pollution. During the event, the minister emphasised the importance of enabling developing countries to access modern recycling technologies, which will enhance environmental justice and contribute to achieving the goals of the anticipated international agreement. 'Prior to this session, the ministry organised a regional meeting in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), during which representatives of the GCC countries participated in the meeting to discuss the proposed wording of the legal instrument,' Dr. Al Subaie said, adding that a unified Gulf position was prepared, which was later adopted as a joint Arab position. He also pointed out that the ministry has implemented several projects in cooperation with international bodies, including the international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to develop environmental monitoring programs and monitor plastic particles in the marine environment, as part of the regional project 'RAS7038.' The minister reiterated Qatar's commitment to implementing its national and international environmental pledges, in accordance with Qatar National Vision 2030, by promoting sustainable environmental policies, supporting environmental innovation, and expanding international also stressed that combating plastic pollution requires concerted global efforts to create a balanced and safe environment for current and future generations.

Following is the text of the statement: At the invitation of the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Republic of Benin Patrice Talon paid a working visit to Qatar on May 19, 2025. The visit marked an important milestone in strengthening the historical friendship and cooperation between Qatar and the Republic of Benin. The discussions between HH the Amir and the president reflected a convergence of views on key regional and international issues, particularly the promotion of peace, stability, and sustainable development. Qatar commended the extensive economic and social reforms launched by the Benin government since 2016, which have laid the foundations for inclusive growth and institutional modernisation. For its part, the Republic of Benin commended the active role played by Qatar on the international stage, particularly in Africa, and noted its efforts to support peace and stability and build sustainable development partnerships on the continent. The two sides expressed interest in enhancing cooperation in the aviation sector, including the possibility of cooperation between the two national carriers, Qatar Airways and Amazon Airlines, in addition to exploring the establishment of a direct flight between the two countries. This step would contribute to enhancing Benin's economic attractiveness, attracting investments, stimulating tourism, freight transport, and cultural exchange. Qatar affirmed its full commitment to the development of the African continent. It reiterated its readiness to support initiatives in the areas of infrastructure, education, and health, in line with its international development agenda and the priorities of its partners in Africa. The two sides also agreed to enhance cooperation in the cultural field, including organising exhibitions and cooperation between cultural institutions and museums, in order to expand the horizons of cultural diplomacy between them. Qatar and the Republic of Benin reiterated their joint commitment to intensifying bilateral consultations, coordinating positions in multilateral forums, and promoting a shared vision for an international order based on sovereignty, inclusiveness, and prosperity.

On Wednesday, the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs held a phone call with Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India HE Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. During the phone call, the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation and ways to strengthen and expand it. They also addressed the latest developments in the ongoing crisis between the Republic of India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and ways to resolve it through diplomatic means. During the call, the Prime Minister expressed the State of Qatar's deep concern over the continued escalation between India and Pakistan, affirming its full support for all regional and international efforts aimed at resolving outstanding issues between the two countries through dialogue and peaceful means. Likewise, the PM held a phone call with Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan HE Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. During the call, they discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to support and strengthen them. They also discussed the latest developments in the crisis between the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Republic of India, and ways to resolve it through diplomacy.
