Int'l Yoga Day celebrated with emphasis on health, harmony
Indore: Indore and other parts of the Malwa-Nimar region enthusiastically celebrated the 11th International Yoga Day on Saturday, with mass participation across all the districts. Political leaders, govt officials, students, and citizens joined collective yoga sessions, highlighting the importance of yoga for physical and mental well-being and its role in global harmony. In Indore, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia addressed the main event at Rajwada, emphasising that "Indore is making history in the field of Yoga." He highlighted yoga's significance and urged everyone to plant a tree, stating, "Trees provide oxygen, which is essential for human life." The event, aimed at promoting both yoga and tourism, saw large numbers of youth, women, and the elderly participating. A grand yoga session was also held at Gofur Chauraha, where Scindia, along with MP cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav, and actress Adah Sharma, shared the stage. Despite light drizzle, thousands of citizens participated with enthusiasm. The session began with actress Adah Sharma reciting the Kal Bhairav Ashtakam, followed by collective 'Om' chanting and yoga practice. Scindia lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts for making yoga a global celebration. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav shared that yoga instructors were appointed in all 85 wards of Indore to facilitate daily practice, benefiting lakhs. All-India mayors' council pushes for more powers
1 2 Panchkula: The 115th executive council meeting of the All India Mayors' Council took place in Panchkula, hosted by mayor Kulbhushan Goyal. The two-day national conference saw participation from over 45 mayors from across India, who gathered to deliberate on the evolving challenges of urban governance. Discussions focused on the powers of mayors, the pressure of growing urban populations, implementation of government schemes, and the need for stronger institutional frameworks. During the press briefing, the council reviewed outcomes from the Dewas conference, introduced the new executive body, and emphasised the formation of state-level organisations. Indore mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav shared insights into the city's acclaimed cleanliness and development efforts. Umashankar Gupta, former minister and general secretary of the council, highlighted the need for a uniform law to empower mayors nationwide. He noted that although a committee had submitted a report to the central government, progress stalled due to administrative changes. A resolution to enhance mayoral powers will be passed and sent to the central government. The event was attended by mayors from cities including Burhanpur, Kanpur, Ayodhya, Bilaspur, Faridabad, Haldwani, Aligarh, Lucknow, Karnal, Yamunanagar, Gurugram, Rohtak, Ambala, and others, marking a significant step toward strengthening urban leadership across India.

City celebrates world environment day
Indore: The city celebrated World Environment Day on Thursday with a series of vibrant and meaningful activities across various institutions and organisations. A grand awareness event was hosted at Gandhi Hall by Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) under Swachh Bharat Mission and National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). Outstanding participants were felicitated with cash prizes and certificates. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav and Council Member Abhishek Sharma graced the occasion. Adding to the green momentum, the IMC launched a tree plantation drive under the 'Women For Tree' initiative. Over 300 saplings were planted at Ahilya Udyan, Sirpur Lake, Talawali Chanda, and Chhota Bangarda by women from DAY-NULM self-help groups. Key officials including Manish Sharma, Rakesh Jain, Anil Banwaria, and several corporators participated. The campaign emphasised women's vital role in ecological stewardship. DAVV organised a special symposium on the role of educational institutions in water conservation. Water Resources Minister Tulsi Silawat, speaking as the chief guest, urged universities to adopt the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative and promote environmental consciousness among students. Vicechancellor, professor Rakesh Singhai, stressed that environmental responsibility is a moral duty for all. Civic body begins construction of first school on its own land
Indore: Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has commenced construction of its first-ever school on its own land. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav laid the foundation stone for the school on Saturday, emphasising the corporation's commitment to providing quality education, including mandatory Sanskrit and Sanatan (ancient Indian) culture education. "Indore Municipal Corporation has always been responsible for maintenance and renovation of schools, but this is the first time it is building a new school on its own land," said the mayor. He said until now, the IMC's efforts were limited to repairing existing schools or constructing new classrooms. This new initiative marks a significant step towards making education and healthcare accessible to the poor and needy. Bhargav expressed the IMC's ambition for the school to be completed on time and equipped with modern amenities akin to private institutions. The school will feature smart classes and LED screens to ensure high-quality education for students. "Our endeavour is to provide better facilities in both education and health sectors to the poor and needy," he reiterated. The mayor emphasised that the new school would not only be a centre for education but also a place for imparting cultural values and moral education, in line with the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. The new school project commenced with an estimated cost of nearly Rs 3 crore. The mayor also highlighted the IMC's significant initiatives in healthcare, mentioning establishment of 65 Sanjeevani Kendras (health centres) where 200 types of medicines are provided free of cost. He announced that new health centres in Ward 85 and Ward 71/72 would be inaugurated soon. Besides them, a sewage treatment plant (STP) is being constructed in Sirpur to resolve drainage issues in Ward 84 and 85.

100 electric vehicles for door-to-door waste collection launched
Indore: Indore Municipal Corporation on Wednesday launched 100 electric vehicles for door-to-door waste collection and six solar-powered water tankers at Rajwada. "IMC has taken an environmentally sensitive step by phasing out old diesel-powered vehicles. This will not only reduce pollution but also safeguard health of citizens. Soon, the next cabinet meeting will be held at Rajwada, giving Indore a new identity at the state level," state cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said at the event. On the occasion, the minister reiterated the plan to plant 51 lakh saplings this year too. "Indore has become the first city in the country to operate clean, green, digital, and solar-powered waste collection vehicles. The cost of these electric vehicles is around Rs 12.5 crore. After 6-7 hours of charging, the electric vehicle could serve throughout the day while the manufacturing company will take care of their maintenance for seven years," Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav said.
