Punjab Speaker Sandhwan seeks public suggestions for Amritsar Sahib, Guru Teg Bahadur's celebrations.

Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], June 1 (ANI): Punjab Legislative Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan announced that the State government will grandly celebrate the 450th foundation day of Shri Amritsar Sahib, emphasising the significance of the Golden Temple. He also stated that the government will seek public suggestions on this matter. 'Golden Temple is the centre of faith of the Sikh religion, and people of all religions pay obeisance here... The state government will celebrate the 450th foundation day of Shri Amritsar Sahib State government will also commemorate the 350th Martyrdom Day of Shri Guru Teg Bahadur government wants to take suggestions from the public regarding it,' he said. After India and Pakistan came to an understanding on cessation of hostilities, the border areas of Punjab gradually returned to normal. Several districts, including Ludhiana, Moga, Ferozepur, and Jalandhar, faced significant threats during the periods when Pakistan deployed drones and missiles, resulting in damage to various areas due to shelling incidents. On May 7, the Indian Army struck key militant sites, including a major terrorist headquarters in Muridke, Pakistan, and PoK. Expecting retaliation against air bases and military installations, they instead faced kamikaze drones and missiles targeting the Golden Temple. After three days of unsuccessful attacks on military targets, civilian areas, including Gurdwara Sahib, were hit with drones and rockets. All air raids were intercepted and neutralised with precision. Following the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, including a Nepali national, were killed, the Indian forces have intensified their operation against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. In retaliation for the terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, in which precision strikes destroyed terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu Kashmir (POJK) and eliminated nearly 100 terror operatives at key bases in Pakistan. Among the targets were Bhawalpur, the headquarters of Jaish, and Muridke, a key training base of Lashkar. After this, on May 10, an understanding of the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan was announced. (ANI)

Water sharing row: Punjab govt seeks BBMB revamp, Dam safety Act repeal

Amid the ongoing water dispute with Haryana, the special session of the Punjab assembly was convened on Monday. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that the Haryana government is trying to steal his state's share of water. "Haryana government and the BJP government are trying to steal Punjab's share of have requested the central government to repeal the Dam Safety Act 2021. This Act comes under Punjab's will not let anyone take Punjab's share of water..." Cheema told ANI. The same sentiments were expressed by the Punjab Legislative Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on the ongoing dispute. "This is not only about Punjab's right, it is in the interest of the nation. The water used by Punjab is used to supply the whole country with food. If you do not give Punjab's share of water, then how will we be able to provide wheat and grains to the condemn the Dam Safety Act, and a new BBMB should be constituted..." he said. Earlier, Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal on Monday moved a resolution in the Punjab Legislative Assembly during a special session, vehemently opposing the Bhakra Beas Management Board's (BBMB) decision to release an additional 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana. Declaring that "not a single drop of extra water" will be spared, Goyal accused the BBMB of acting as a "puppet of the BJP" and conspiring to undermine Punjab's water rights through illegal and unconstitutional means. Goyal outlined key points in the resolution, asserting that Punjab had provided 4,000 cusecs of water to Haryana on humanitarian grounds but would not release any additional water from its share. He labelled the BBMB's late-night meeting on April 30 as "illegal" and a deliberate attempt to divert Punjab's rightful water to Haryana. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has accused Haryana of mismanaging its water allocation from the Bhakra Dam, amidst the ongoing water-sharing dispute between the two states. Mann, in a statement, said, "As per the data, they (Haryana) used up their share by 31st March. Still, we are providing them with drinking water. They will receive water on the night of 20th May. For 15 days, they will have to suffer the consequences of their mistake. We had written six letters to them. There used to be a meeting every month, and we used to write to them every month that their water share would finish this they paid no repealed the Dam Safety Act." Criticising the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), Mann added, "BBMB's conduct is dictatorial, this has been strongly has been pointed out that BBMB has become a 'white elephant'; Punjab bears the expenses, but Punjab is bypassed, and decisions are passed. They call meetings at 3-4 hours' notice. But Emergency Meetings also require a week's don't even give 6-7 hours. So, BBMB should be reconstituted.

Pahalgam attack: BJP launches campaign across Punjab seeking action against illegal Pakistani nationals

The BJP launched a statewide campaign Monday demanding the identification and deportation of illegal Pakistani nationals residing in Punjab in the wake of the recent terrorist attack in South Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. Party leaders at the district level submitted memorandums to deputy commissioners across the state urging immediate legal action in this regard. Copies of the memorandum have also been marked to Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. In his memorandum, Rajnish Dhiman, president of the BJP 's Ludhiana district unit, cited the Union Home Ministry's recent order suspending visa services for Pakistani citizens, excluding diplomatic and official categories. 'This is a matter of grave national security. The local administration must identify all Pakistani nationals without valid documents or with expired visas and initiate deportation proceedings without delay,' he said. In the memorandum submitted to Himanshu Jain, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, Dhiman added that the BJP expects swift and decisive action from the administration in line with national directives to prevent any potential threat to public safety. 'We urge authorities to take immediate cognizance of this memorandum and ensure appropriate action,' said BJP state spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal. The move comes amid heightened security concerns across the country following the April 22 terror attack, and signals the party's intent to ensure stringent enforcement of immigration laws at the grassroots level. Sources revealed that the police and intelligence bureau have all details of Pakistani nationals in Punjab whose visas have expired and whether they have been deported. Meanwhile, the Punjab Legislative Assembly on Monday paid tributes to the victims of the Pahalgam attack. In the wake of the terrorist attack, India took swift action against Pakistan, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, downgrading diplomatic relations with the neighbouring nation, and expelling diplomats from the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi.
