NHL Rumors: Insider reveals money tension rising in Matthew Knies deal as Maple Leafs struggle with cap space
NHL Rumors: Insider reveals money tension rising in Matthew Knies deal as Maple Leafs struggle with cap space (Image via Getty) There is a lot of noise coming out of Toronto, but no one knows the full truth yet. While sources are saying different things, the Toronto Maple Leafs are developing a new contract for young forward Matthew Knies. Although certain people think an agreement is near, others claim the two sides are yet far apart. Then then, what is actually happening? Matthew Knies and Toronto Maple Leafs facing gap in contract numbers NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed an update in The Fourth Period on Thursday, June 20, 2025, on contract talks between Matthew Knies and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Though both sides are trying to reach a new arrangement, they are not yet aligned. Some sources close to the team believe the deal is almost finished. But other people close to the situation told Pagnotta that there's still a big gap to fix. 'It could go either way,' said one source familiar with the talks. That's why fans are getting mixed messages right now. Knies just finished his entry-level contract after scoring a career-high 29 goals and 58 points in the 2024–25 season. He played 78 regular season games. The 22-year-old forward also had five goals in 13 playoff games this year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? Knies is one of three restricted free agent (RFA) forwards still unsigned by the Leafs, along with Nick Robertson and Pontus Holmberg. The Leafs want to keep all three players but are taking things one step at a time. Matthew Knies asking for more money than Toronto Maple Leafs are offering According to Pagnotta's report, the main issue in the talks is money. The Toronto Maple Leafs want to offer Knies a deal worth $4–$5 million per year. But Knies and his agent are asking for closer to $7 million per year. If it's a long-term deal, Knies might accept a smaller yearly amount. But if it's a short contract, he could get a chance to become a free agent around age 26 or 27. That would give him a better shot at a big contract later. The Leafs have around $25 million in salary cap space, based on data from PuckPedia. So, they do have the money to keep Knies. But both sides need to agree on the length and salary before anything is made official. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. Watch Episode 1 here

New York Rangers sign Matt Rempe for two years
The New York Rangers signed Matt Rempe, a restricted free agent, to a two-year extension with a $975,000 average annual value, according to a league source. Rempe, a 2020 sixth-round pick, has played in 59 regular-season games over the past two seasons, plus 11 more in the 2024 postseason. He had three goals and eight points in 42 games this past season. Advertisement Rangers players and front-office personnel have raved about his work ethic since he first came to the NHL, and this contract is a bet on his game continuing to grow. The 22-year-old's qualifying offer would have been $813,750, according to PuckPedia. At 6 foot 9, Rempe is a huge, physical forward who has at times struggled with discipline. He already has three suspensions in his NHL career, most recently an eight-game punishment for boarding and elbowing Dallas' Miro Heiskanen in December. He had 67 penalty minutes in his 42 games this past season. Rempe's willingness to fight has made him a name known throughout the league since his debut. He had four NHL fights this past season, plus two in the AHL. The forward skates well for his size and played on the Rangers' fourth line when in the lineup. He also went down to the AHL's Hartford team on multiple occasions to play consistently in all situations. He played 18 games with the Wolf Pack. 'I think I improved a lot, especially from last year,' Rempe said. 'From the beginning of the season to the end, I think a lot of development happened. My game got a lot better. I've still got a lot of work to do. I want to continue to work on all parts of my game.' Rempe is spending this summer training in the New York area. He is the second Rangers' restricted free agent to sign after Juuso Pärssinen, who signed a two-year deal with a $1.25 million AAV. New York still has several key restricted free agents (RFAs), including Will Cuylle and K'Andre Miller. After the Rempe extension, they'll have just under $14 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia. (Photo of Matt Rempe: André Ringuette / NHLI via Getty Images)

Winnipeg Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers may enter free agent market as New York Islanders inquire about his availability
Nikolaj Ehlers (via Getty Images) Winnipeg Jets right wing Nikolaj Ehlers will be testing for free agency, according to Elliotte Friedman. The 29-year-old will finish a successful final year on his seven-year, $6 million AAV deal. Nikolaj Ehlers accumulated 63 points (24 goals, 39 assists) in 69 regular-season contests and contributed seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) in eight playoff games this season. He is one of the most desirable forwards on the open market this summer, second to Mitch Marner among free-agent wingers. New York Islanders show interest in Nikolaj Ehlers as the winger is reportedly going to test for free agency The New York Islanders supposedly made a call to ask about Nikolaj Ehlers' status before the 2024 NHL Draft, as relayed by The Hockey News. But with Winnipeg playing well heading into the deadline, the Jets chose to keep one of their elite forwards from being traded in the middle of a hot streak. The team now stands to lose him for free. As Nikolaj Ehlers' camp readies for suitors to make their pitches, the Islanders still stand as a rational suitor, on paper, in any event. The team badly needs a scoring winger of dynamic skill after ending last season with one of the league's worst power-play units (12.6%, second-lowest). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Ehlers, who scored six power-play goals last season, would be a seamless fit there, particularly with Brock Nelson no longer on the roster. Nikolaj Ehlers Is Planning To Test Free Agency, But That Doesn't Mean The End For The Winnipeg Jets The Islanders currently only have approximately $20 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia. About $2 million of available cap space is there, not close to what would be needed to sign Ehlers, who might make up to $8 million per year in free agency. To create some room, New York would probably need to shed contracts such as Jean-Gabriel Pageau's $5 million and Pierre Engvall's $3 million. Parting with those two contracts might provide the fiscal flexibility to enter the Ehlers sweepstakes. Ehlers fits the bill as precisely what the Islanders require: a steadying 20-to-25-goal wing who offers best power-play potential and top-six dependability. He would further fortify the lineup and offer greater offensive latitude to Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat, depending on how top-line action is assigned by head coach Patrick Roy. The question, as always, is durability. Ehlers has a well-documented injury history—he's played more than 70 games only three times in 10 NHL seasons. While he was healthy for all 82 games in 2023–24, he missed time again this season, finishing with 69 appearances. Also read: Nikolaj Ehlers faces a big summer career decision as his current season shows strong form Even so, his ceiling is well beyond that which Anthony Duclair, the big summer signing last year (4 years, $4.5M AAV), has provided to date. If the Islanders are serious about moving past being a bubble playoff team, they require demonstrated scoring skill, and Ehlers fits the bill.

NHL rumors: Insider sheds light on Sam Bennett's future with Florida Panthers ahead of NHL free agency
The Florida Panthers reached the Stanley Cup Final for the third consecutive season with the help of forward Sam Bennett. With Florida attempting to become the league's newest dynasty, there have been questions about whether or not Bennett will even hit NHL free agency. James Mirtle of The Athletic writes that no one he's spoken to around the League expects Bennett to be available this offseason, with a new deal likely to be worked out with Florida before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Both forwards were expected to be highly sought after, especially by clubs seeking veterans with ample playoff experience. The 6-foot-1 center has been productive throughout the playoffs, heading into Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals with the fifth-most points (19) in hockey this postseason. Selected by the Calgary Flames with the fourth overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, Bennett has contributed 3 goals already in the Stanley Cup Finals. As of now, 29 centers carry an AAV of $8-plus million for the 2025-'26 campaign. One thing Florida is likely aware of is the potential bidding war that Bennett's camp can use as leverage in contract negotiations. TSN's Pierre LeBrun recently suggested there could be multiple teams willing to offer Bennett $10-plus million annually if he reaches the open market. Panthers' defenseman Aaron Ekblad and winger Brad Marchand are also poised to become UFAs on July 1. Marchand has stated that he's open to re-signing with Florida, but the club will likely prioritize Eklbad and Bennett following the Stanley Cup Final. Related Headlines

Insider reveals huge Mitch Marner contract offer Pacific team is considering in NHL free agency
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is set to become one of the best players available in NHL free agency this offseason, having already been linked to multiple teams. Given how high the reported bidding war could get, it's no surprise that a return to Toronto seems to be off the table. James Mirtle of The Athletic reports that the Anaheim Ducks are considering a contract offer valued at more than $14 million per season. If they follow through on that consideration, it would make Marner the highest-paid NHL player for the 2025-26 season. Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews ($13.25 million) is the only other player making at least $13 million per season. Matthews is a perennial All-Star selection; Draisaitl led the NHL with 52 goals this season and holds the NHL single-season record for overtime goals (six) and points (nine), and he's tied the single playoff record for overtime goals (three) and points (four). Marner, age 28, is a three-time All-Star who has scored just three goals in his past 20 playoff games for the under-achieving Maple Leafs.. Read More: Insider sheds light on Sam Bennett potentially hitting NHL free agency Anaheim Ducks cap space 2025 (PuckPedia): $38.69 million Advertisement However, the price tag is a reflection of the skyrocketing NHL salary cap. It's increasing over the next three seasons from $88 million (2024-25) to $113.5 million (2027-28 season), including a $95.5 million cap next season. If Marner receives a multi-year extension with a $14.5 million AAV, his deal will account for 15.18 percent of the salary cap next season and dip much further below that in the following years. So, while many will see it as an overpay, it's a reflection of where salaries are headed for players in the seasons to come.
