S'wak govt allocates RM193,000 to boost Melanau Heritage Gallery in Oya

Fatimah, who is also Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, said the grant reflects the state government's commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Melanau community. 'The Melanau Heritage Gallery is a Projek Rakyat that has been completed through grants from the Sarawak Premier and is now open to the public,' she said in a statement issued through the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas). Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg presented the cheque to the board's chair, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, during a ceremony at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday. The presentation was witnessed by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. She added that the gallery serves as a cultural exhibition space and a platform for education and tourism, benefiting both local communities and visitors. According to the Dalat assemblywoman, two phases of the gallery have been completed, while the third phase is in the planning stage. 'The next phase will feature 10 key components highlighting Melanau customs, traditions and notable local figures. We also plan to introduce interactive elements such as traditional dance, food and medicinal workshops to offer visitors a more immersive experience,' she said. The ceremony also saw several other organisations receiving grants from Abang Johari. These included the Association of the Boards of Management of Aided Chinese Primary Schools in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian, represented by chairman Dato Jonathan Chai; the Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Board, represented by Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau; and Tabung Jasamu Kebajikan Veteran Tentera Anak Sarawak, represented by Lt-Gen (R) Datuk Stephen Mundaw, advisor to the Sarawak Veterans Association.

Sarawak allocates RM42.24 bln for 500 infrastructure projects under 12MP, says Uggah

KUCHING (May 28): A total of RM42.24 billion has been allocated by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) for the implementation of 500 projects under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. The State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, the projects comprise 244 under Development Expenditure, 186 categorised as People's Projects (Projek Rakyat), while another 70 are being financed through alternative funding mechanisms. 'The overall breakdown includes approximately 301 road projects valued at RM28.03 billion, 70 bridge projects worth RM5.76 billion, 104 building projects amounting to RM3.68 billion, 23 river infrastructure projects valued at RM4.42 billion, and two airport developments with a combined cost of RM350.82 million,' he added when delivering his winding-up speech during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today. He said as of now, 218 projects have been completed, 122 are under construction, and 160 remain in the pre-contract stage. This marks a notable increase of 15 completed projects and 24 new projects that have entered the construction phase since the last DUN sitting, he said. He also said the progress reflects the Sarawak government's strong commitment to delivering foundational infrastructure to drive economic growth and improve the well-being of its people. He also highlighted the government's emphasis on bridge construction to enhance connectivity, particularly in rural and remote areas of the state. 'To support this initiative, a total of RM4.97 billion has been allocated for the construction of 16 major bridges across Sarawak,' he said. Five of these bridges have already been completed and opened to the public, namely the Marudi Bridge, Muara Lassa Bridge, Bintulu Jepak Bridge, Batang Rajang Bridge which is now known as Jambatan Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang Bin Tuanku Haji Othman and Batang Saribas Bridge, which opened on 25 May. Another five bridges are expected to be completed by the end of this year. These include the Sungai Lingga Bridge, Batang Kemena (Sebauh) Bridge, Batang Igan Bridge, Sungai Limbang Bridge, and Batang Lupar Bridge. 'The remaining six which are the Batang Paloh Bridge, Batang Lupar Bridge (second phase), Sejingkat Bridge, Batang Krian Bridge, Batang Saribas Bridge (second phase), and Batang Rambungan Bridge, are scheduled for completion by 2026,' he said. Uggah said these bridge projects represent significant progress in strengthening transportation networks and connectivity across the state. Sarawak Plans Thailand 2025 SEA Games Visit To Prepare For 2027 Hosting Duties
KUCHING, May 27 (Bernama) -- As co-host of the 2027 SEA Games, Sarawak plans a benchmarking visit to Thailand - the host of the 2025 SEA Games - to study the live operations of the major sporting event. Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the visit was important to ensure a world-class delivery when the state hosts the biennial multi-sport Games in 2027. 'The knowledge gained will help us refine our strategies for 2027. Ultimately, the SEA Games will not only inspire future athletes but will also position Kuching as a central hub for international sports in Southeast Asia, marking Sarawak's bold stride onto the global stage,' he said in his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly here today. bootstrap slideshow The 33rd edition of the Southeast Asian Games is scheduled to be held in Thailand from Dec 9-20. On March 28, Abdul Karim reportedly said that Sarawak expects to host 18 events during the 2027 SEA Games, including bowling, swimming, diving, cricket, taekwondo, archery and shooting. Abdul Karim said his ministry is overseeing 87 sports facilities statewide, with 25 new projects being developed under initiatives such as the Projek Rakyat and the Development Agency Projects and Programmes (DAPP). 'These facilities are being upgraded and modernised to meet national and international standards, fulfil requirements for hosting international tournaments, enhance competitiveness and increase their appeal to today's youth,' he said. He added that in a bid to strengthen Sarawak's competitive edge, the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) is refining its development strategy by focusing on 14 high-potential sports with strong medal prospects. They are golf, taekwondo, bowling, aquatics (swimming and diving), boxing, muay Thai, athletics, archery, silat, squash, volleyball, artistic gymnastics, wushu and lawn bowls.
