Time for Newcastle owners to make statement and put end to Alexander Isak saga
Towards the end of a season that brought that elusive trophy and qualification for next season's Champions League, Eddie Howe was having to field familiar questions about transfer interest in his players. Here is what he said. 'It is a frustration," he declared. Only looking mildly frustrated, to be fair. "That's because I don't see why our players are getting linked here, there and everywhere with other clubs.' There are a few reasons why this continues to happen but the main ones are that a) you have got a lot of very good players, Eddie, and b) a lot of people are under the impression that you don't pay them the sort of money they could earn at a truly elite Champions League club. And, of course, under the Profit and Sustainability Rules, the art of balancing the books within regulations seems to be more delicate than it was when, for example, Manchester City's new owners were taking their club to new levels or the Qataris were developing Paris Saint-Germain. Which is why there actually might be one or two observers out there who think it would make sense for Newcastle to accept a huge offer for Alexander Isak. After all, losing a talismanic, world class striker does not automatically mean a downgrade in team performance. Ask PSG and Kylian Mbappe. And just think what Newcastle could do with the £150million that many think is what the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal would pay for Isak. No matter what the entire Newcastle fanbase might think, keeping Isak is not a complete no-brainer. But it IS the right thing to do, assuming, of course, he wants to stay. Isak has three years left on his Newcastle contract so, in theory, the decision is not with him. But it is, really. This is the real world and such is the allure of obvious suitors such as Liverpool and Arsenal, Newcastle will open talks over a new contract with Isak, presumably sooner rather than later. Now-ish would be ideal. His current wages - believed to be in the region of £120,000 a week - are clearly not commensurate with his standing as one of the world's best strikers. Whatever the top line Newcastle can come up with under their wage structure, it is likely to be less than Isak can earn elsewhere. But he genuinely does seem happy there and Howe has assembled a squad that is still developing. That is why, to Eddie's gentle annoyance, there is frequent talk of interest in the likes of Anthony Gordon, in Sandro Tonali, in Tino Livramento, as well as Isak. At the risk of stating the obvious, deep, talented squads win major trophies. And while there was no investment in extra talent last summer, Howe has a squad that is not far off being able to sustain a serious Premier League title challenge while giving a strong account of itself in Europe. Along with a pay rise, that is what should keep Isak at St James' Park. So, it is over to the Saudi Arabian owners to find a way, find a way of taking that extra step. And the starting point in that journey should be - despite the temptation of a record transfer fee - to sort out a contract for Isak. That should be Newcastle's biggest statement of intent this summer. Sky has slashed the price of its bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more. Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games next season, an increase of up to 100 more.

Aston Villa stance on Morgan Rogers transfer amid Arsenal and Chelsea interest
After an impressive season with Aston Villa there is heavyweight interest in Morgan Rogers from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea this summer. The 22-year-old continued to cement his place as one of the most promising young talents in the country as he starred for Villa in the Premier League and Champions League. His performances were also recognised on the international stage as he won his first four England caps and has become a contender to make it into Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad next summer. Across all competitions he made 54 appearances for Villa over the last campaign, scoring 14 goals. Arsenal and Chelsea are both admirers of the former Manchester City player but Villa have little interest in selling one of their key men. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. The Daily Mail report that the Villains have 'no plans to cash in on' Rogers this summer, although their financial position is precarious. Villa remain in a dangerous position in terms of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and will look to sell players this summer. Missing out on the Champions League on the final day of last season was a big blow for the club and sales are necessary this summer. Leon Bailey and Jacob Ramsey have been touted as players who are available for sale, with the latter coming with a £40m price tag. Villa do not want to sell homegrown star Ramsey, but he would represent pure profit on PSR and interest from Spurs could be cashed in on. Iconic goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has also been linked with a move, with Manchester United thought to be interested in the World Cup winning stopper. Striker Ollie Watkins also remains of interest to Arsenal after they saw a January bid turned down for the England international. However, he is not top of their shopping list, with Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres attracting more attention. Ramsey, though, is not expected to depart, with the BBC describing him as 'untouchable' in the current transfer window. Ex-England and Aston Villa forward Emile Heskey has warned Ramsey over the possibility of a move to a bigger club, saying he could be lost in the shuffle elsewhere. More Trending 'I think he needs to be really careful,' ex-Aston Villa striker Heskey told Prime Casino. 'He's a huge asset for Villa and right now he's a fantastic player. 'But he's got to choose wisely. If I was him, I would stay at Villa, establish myself and play more football. Because if you go to a theoretically bigger club and you don't play football, you're wasting your talent. 'He's got to play. I love the way that he plays. He plays with enthusiasm, he plays with freedom and he's a very good player. 'So I would suggest he stays at Aston Villa for another season at least.' Arsenal learn Morgan Rogers transfer update as Villa face up to PSR reality
Aston Villa may need to sell players this summer after missing out on Champions League qualification, with Arsenal among the clubs keeping tabs on star man Morgan Rogers Morgan Rogers is not one of the Aston Villa stars up for sale, it has been claimed. The England international is interesting Arsenal, who also failed with a bid for his team-mate Ollie Watkins in January. Mikel Arteta is expected to add attacking reinforcements over the summer after another runner-up finish in the Premier League. A central striker is the main priority, but the Gunners aren't ruling out another wide forward. Nico Williams has been on their radar for some time, but Barcelona appear to be leading the race for the Spanish international. Real Madrid star Rodrygo is another name mentioned in connection with the club, as is Rogers, but a deal for the latter looks difficult. According to The Mail, Villa are expected to make sales before the end of June to ensure they comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules. However, Rogers is not one of those being made available for transfer. Leon Bailey is among those more likely to leave, amid interest from the Saudi Pro League, while Villa are said to be ready to listen to offers for Jacob Ramsey. England Under-21 international Ramsey, who missed part of last season through injury, is reportedly available for around £40million. Left-back Lucas Digne has just one year left on his Villa deal, and Atletico Madrid are understood to be keen to bring the Frenchman back to La Liga. Digne, who turns 32 in July, spent two years at Barcelona before moving to the Premier League - initially with Everton - in 2018. Villa brought in more than £100m in transfer fees last summer, as well as adding new signings including Ian Maatsen and Ross Barkley. Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby fetched the biggest sums, joining Juventus and Al Ittihad respectively. One man whose departure looks more likely is Emi Martinez. The goalkeeper was visibly emotional on the final weekend of the season, and has been cagey on his future amid interest from Manchester United and unnamed Saudi clubs. "My future? I don't know," Martinez told reporters when reporting for Argentina duty during the June international break, "I come here to play for the national team, and that's the only thing that matters to me right now. "Do I want to move to a new club? The transfer window just opened, so there's still a long way to go." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Liverpool ready to make £100m PSG star their next signing: report

Florian Wirtz may not be the only £100m man heading to Anfield. | Credit: Getty Images Liverpool have just agreed a £116.5m deal to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, and already they're eyeing up another £100m man. Advertisement The Wirtz move has been the story of the summer so far, with Liverpool reportedly agreeing on Friday morning to a new record Premier League fee. The Reds have already concluded a £29.5m deal for Jeremie Frimpong from the same Bundesliga outfit, but they aren't done there. Liverpool add £100m Paris Saint-Germain attacker to their shopping list Arne Slot has certainly earned this spending, clinching the Premier League title while barely spending a penny last summer | Credit:With Wirtz, Frimpong and a move for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez mooted to cost around £40m, Liverpool are already fast approaching the £200m mark in their summer spending. Adding another £100m to their outgoings doesn't seem feasible, but the Merseysiders have already sold Caoimhin Kelleher in a deal worth up to £18m, and may yet be open to sales for all of Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott, Kostas Tsimikas and Darwin Nunez, to name just a few. Back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, plus a £10m early-release fee for Trent Alexander-Arnold, have been Liverpool's only outgoings this summer | Credit: Getty Images According to the Sun, Liverpool are ready to open their wallet back up for highly-rated PSG winger Bradley Barcola, ranked at no.5 in FourFourTwo's list of the best left wingers in the world right now. Advertisement It's thought that the 22-year-old would cost north of £100m, which, if progressed, could see the Reds footing a £300m bill in total this transfer window. The young Frenchman is also Bayern Munich's primary target, but that was also the case with Wirtz, who has ended up at Anfield. Barcola was once thought to be one of PSG's brightest talents, but has slipped down the pecking order in the French capital on account of the emergence of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue. Bradley Barcola may need a move away from PSG to continue progressing | Credit: Ulrik Pedersen/NurPhoto via Getty Images In FourFourTwo's opinion, there's surely no way Liverpool spend two lots of £100m+ in one window, is there? If they do, have no doubt that clubs like Newcastle United, who seem to be in a perennial battle with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) despite their wealthy owners, will have plenty of thoughts about it. But it's tough to deny that an attacking unit containing Wirtz, Barcola and Mohamed Salah would be an exciting watch next season. Barcola is valued at €70m, according to Transfermarkt.

Man Utd face repeat of Alejandro Garnacho mess as theory shows true priorities
Manchester United have been told they are in danger of isolating some of their younger and more promising stars with the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo having uncertain futures at Old Trafford Shaun Wright-Phillips has warned that Manchester United risk alienating their young talents if they opt for a sell-to-buy strategy this summer. The ex-Manchester City and Chelsea midfielder highlighted the predicament of Alejandro Garnacho, who seems to have fallen out of favour with Ruben Amorim. Wright-Phillips also expressed concern over 20-year-old Kobbie Mainoo's situation, as he looks to be struggling to adapt to his manager's system. Wright-Phillips suggests that academy product Mainoo and Garnacho, who was bought for £420,000, could be seen as valuable assets. The United board appears willing to let the duo leave for a substantial fee in order to alleviate concerns over Profit and Sustainability Rules. Marcus Rashford, another homegrown talent, also looks set to bring in a hefty sum for United this summer. With the club facing financial difficulties after a disastrous season that saw them miss out on European football, significant player sales may be needed to boost their transfer funds. United have already splashed out £62.5 million on Matheus Cunha from Wolves, reports the Manchester Evening News. According to Wright-Phillips, the Red Devils are now in a state of uncertainty, seemingly ready to cash in on players once considered the future of the club. "I don't think they should be getting rid of key players like that," Wright-Phillips told Betway. "Because the same thing in many ways has happened to Kobbie Mainoo without even saying anything. He's just not been playing either and he was that golden child, as well, about a year ago. "It's either that or they're trying to raise money from players they've not had to pay for. Because some of their selling, I'm not really understanding." Garnacho was limited to just 20 minutes in United's Europa League final defeat by Tottenham. The 20-year-old now finds himself on the brink of an Old Trafford exit with teams such as Chelsea and Napoli linked with the Argentinian for around £50m-£60m. The young winger hit out after the humbling loss in Bilbao, branding United's season "s**t" and adding that he would wait to see what his future holds. Wright-Phillips believes that Amorim and United have poorly handled Garnacho's situation. "It's a hard one because I do think he's a fantastic winger," Wright-Phillips added. "I like wingers that try and take on their defenders, entertain, because that's what I based my game off –entertaining the crowd, trying to make the full-back's life hell. Garnacho does that in multiple ways. "He was obviously hurt by the decision not to start him in the final, which, to be honest, I didn't understand either, considering he had started all the other games and played really well in most of them." He continued: "But before the game, the manager's seen something tactically different – whether it worked or didn't work. When he brings him on, that's when the game changed, and it was more United than Spurs, because he was causing them all sorts of problems. "It obviously hurt him deeply, and I think the manager should have just pulled him aside and said, 'Look, I know you were hurt, but you could have just come and said it to me, you didn't have to go public'. But he's gone public. I just think there's a better way for the manager and the club to handle it."
