Health concerns keep UK's Princess Catherine away from Royal Ascot tradition
Princess Catherine has withdrawn from Royal Ascot as she continues her recovery from cancer, missing the event, which will be attended by Prince William and King Charles. The future queen has gradually returned to duties after remission in January. The Royal Ascot, a cherished event for the royal family, was also Queen Elizabeth II's favourite sporting occasion. Britain's Catherine, Princess of Wales, who is recovering from cancer, has pulled out of the Royal Ascot race meeting, her Kensington Palace office said on Wednesday. The famed sporting event in Berkshire in southern England is a key event in the royal calendar. Catherine, also known as Kate, would not be attending Royal Ascot with her husband, Prince William, King Charles III and Queen Camilla as she continued to 'find the right balance following her battle with cancer,' the Press Association news agency added. The 43-year-old future queen has been making a gradual return to public duties since she announced she was cancer-free in September 2024. In March that year, the mother-of-three revealed she was undergoing a course of 'preventative chemotherapy' for an undisclosed cancer. Kate, who in January revealed she was in remission, was said to be disappointed not to be able to attend Royal Ascot, a renowned social and sporting occasion for which the royal family came out in force. The annual five-day race meeting was said to be the late Queen Elizabeth II's favourite sporting event. Royal Ascot begins each day of the week with the Royal Procession, a historic tradition in which the monarch and various accompanying members of the royal family arrive along the track in horse-drawn carriages. The king announced in early 2024 that he, too, had been diagnosed with an unspecified cancer. He has since returned to public duties but is still undergoing treatment. Princess Kate's New Wax Figure Revealed at Madame Tussauds
London's Madame Tussauds museum unveiled on Wednesday a new wax figure of Princess Catherine of Wales, wife of Crown Prince William. The new figure stands next to one of her husband and those of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, AFP reported. The Princess of Wales, 43, is wearing a sparkly pink Jenny Packham gown and silver pumps, as well as a Royal Victorian Order blue sash. 'The new figure is styled in honor of an evening outfit Kate wore to King Charles' second annual Diplomatic Reception in December 2023,' Madame Tussauds said. It is finished with an exact replica of the Lover's Knot tiara, which had been worn in the 1980s by the museum's figure of Princess Diana. Senior general manager at Madame Tussauds, Steve Blackburn, said the Princess of Wales, also known as Kate, was 'majestically crafted by our talented studio team.' She 'has been sculpted to ensure her resemblance is fit for a future queen, alongside her dashing husband,' Blackburn added. Kate's new double has been put in place nearly 14 months after the princess announced she had been diagnosed with an unspecified cancer and was having chemotherapy in March 2024. The shock announcement came only weeks after officials revealed that King Charles III, 76, had also been diagnosed with cancer. The London tourist attraction first launched wax figures of William and Kate in April 2012, a year after their wedding.

Time magazine praises Prince and Princess of Wales's ‘modern royal agenda'
The Prince and Princess of Wales have been hailed by Time for their 'modern royal agenda'. In the magazine's inaugural Time100 philanthropy list, the royal couple have been named alongside 'the most influential people shaping the future of giving', including David Beckham, Michael Bloomberg and Oprah Winfrey. The Prince and Princess, whose primary charitable work is under the umbrella of the Royal Foundation, were recognised for 'aligning social imperatives with sound business strategies and building corporate alliances to expand their reach'. Elsewhere in the accompanying description, Time said the couple were 'less concerned with cultural preservation and more attuned to social issues', suggesting that 'priorities have shifted' in how the Royal family conducts philanthropy. Previously, Prince William said he intended to go 'a step further' than his family had previously done by bringing change instead of just raising awareness about good causes. In November 2023, the heir to the throne revealed that he would like to delve 'deeper' into select social issues, such as tackling homelessness, rather than having too many causes on his agenda. Between them, the Waleses have established initiatives tackling climate change, mental health in the rural community, homelessness in the UK, as well as improving public awareness of the importance of early childhood. Time noted Catherine's Shaping Us campaign, launched in 2023, which aims to improve society's understanding of the significance of a child's first five years in shaping adulthood and society as a whole. As part of the initiative, the Princess convened a business taskforce to back her campaign, bringing influential names on board such as Deloitte, Lego and Ikea. At the time, she urged leaders to think 'radically' in order to create a workforce that is 'resilient, flexible and able to work through differences with each other' because 'the healthy development of our children relies on healthy adults'. Time hailed the taskforce and their subsequent report, published last spring, which concluded that investing in early childhood programs could yield an additional £45.5 billion for the UK's economy annually. The couple's approach to philanthropy does not follow in the footsteps of the late Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, who held over a thousand charity patronages between them, raising awareness and money through their support of many causes. Instead, the Prince of Wales – who holds far fewer patronages than his father – has stated his preference for focusing on creating impact and legacy through more specific social campaigns for his tenure. 'Rather than just being patron, I want to do more,' he said during his trip to Singapore for the Earthshot Prize Awards in 2023, adding: 'It's kind of going deeper and longer than it is the case of just having loads of causes that you sort of turn up and keep an eye on.' The Prince and Princess have previously featured on the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world. They were chosen in 2011, the year of their marriage, which was described as a 'fairy tale' and 'happy ending' by the magazine. 'Enormous popular appeal' The Princess was later featured on the list alone in 2013, as the then Duchess of Cambridge, for her 'enormous popular appeal' and her embracing of 'the royal family's tradition of public service'. It was the same year that her eldest, Prince George, was born. The King was named on Time 100 in 2023 and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were named 'icons' by the publication on the 2021 list. Elsewhere on the inaugural philanthropic Time 100 are the Duchess's friends including her Montecito neighbour Oprah Winfrey and celebrity chef and collaborator José Andrés.
