Thousands hit the pavement for annual Manitoba Marathon
Clear skies, cooler temperatures and clean air quality graced the streets for thousands of runners who hit the pavement on Sunday during the annual Manitoba Marathon. The event kicked off at 7 a.m. at the Princess Auto Stadium in south Winnipeg. Runners are participating in a number of races, including the 42.2 kilometre full marathon. About half of the nearly 12,500 participants who signed up for this year's event are new runners, Rachel Munday, the executive director of the race told CBC. "It's a running boom," she said. The Manitoba Marathon is just the latest example of races throughout the country seeing an increase in overall participation, Munday said. Just shy of 1,300 people registered for the full marathon, Munday said, marking one of the largest numbers recorded in the race's history. "It's not just about the numbers … it's a new demographic, it's a diverse group, there's people from every background and it's really exciting to see everybody in the community," Munday said. A number of roads are closed on Sunday to accommodate the marathon including University Crescent between Chancellor Matheson Road and Pembina Highway, the city said in a news release. Wellington Crescent has a number of partial closures as the marathon route switches from Portage Avenue this year.

Demski has two touchdown catches in Blue Bombers' 34-20 victory over Lions

THE CANADIAN PRESS/John Woods WINNIPEG — If someone had told Matthew Peterson he'd carry the ball for 130 yards and a touchdown in his CFL debut, the Blue Bombers running back was candid in what his response would have been. 'I'm confident, you know. I would have said, 'You're damn right,'" he said with a smile, repeating the line for greater effect. "No, I'm glad I could just come out here and just do my thing and make sure that the offence still flows.' Winnipeg defeated the B.C. Lions 34-20 in their season opener on Thursday without starting quarterback Zach Collaros and star running back Brady Oliveira. Collaros was serving a one-game suspension for failing to respond to an off-season drug-testing request. He was replaced by Chris Streveler, who threw two of his three touchdown passes to Nic Demski. Streveler completed 15 of 24 pass attempts for 246 yards and one interception in front of a sellout of 32,343 at Princess Auto Stadium. 'Just guys leaning on each other and making their plays,' Streveler said. 'Matt (Peterson) stepping up, having a great game. Guys making plays when the ball comes their way. And the great thing is, there's still improvements to be made.' Winnipeg opened the game with a four-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Oliveira, the CFL's reigning most outstanding player and top Canadian, burst out of the gates for a 43-yard gain, the longest carry of his career. Streveler followed up with a 20-yard TD pass to Demski in the end zone at 2:29, marking his 72nd consecutive game with at least one reception. Oliveira went to the locker room after the score. The Bombers (1-0) announced he wouldn't return because of an upper-body injury. There was no update after the game. B.C. quarterback Nathan Rourke left the game midway through the fourth quarter after an apparent injury. He was 12 of 27 passing for 249 yards with one TD and one interception. He also ran two yards for a score. Rourke was replaced by Jeremiah Masoli as the Lions fell to 1-1. 'I'm not sure exactly what it is,' Rourke told reporters after the game of the possible injury to his midsection. 'I won't speculate, but it was affecting the way I was throwing it. I couldn't throw it, so I thought it was better for the team if I took myself out at that point because I wasn't able to generate enough power on the ball.' He said he's optimistic he'll be ready to go when the Lions host the Bombers in a June 21 rematch. Keric Wheatfall had Winnipeg's other TD reception, finishing with five catches for 127 yards. Sergio Castillo booted field goals from 49 and 50 yards for Winnipeg, but missed from 47 yards out. He made three of his four convert attempts and the Bombers also picked up a point off a punt single. Keon Hatcher caught a 77-yard TD pass for the Lions and finished with four catches for 150 yards. Sean Whyte hit field goals from 21 and 37 yards and connected on two converts. The Bombers led 10-3 after the first quarter, 18-10 at halftime and 28-20 heading into the fourth. 'I believe in our guys' ability to fight and make plays down the stretch,' Lions head coach Buck Pierce said. "They've got to understand it's a game of opportunities and we didn't start the way that we wanted to start the game or the first half, for that matter.' After Demski's opening touchdown, the Bombers boosted their lead thanks to a turnover. Defensive back Marquise Bridges intercepted a tipped Rourke pass attempt, leading to Castillo's 49-yarder and a 10-0 lead at 8:39. Rourke, who was pressured by Winnipeg's defence all game, ran for 36 yards to get his team to Winnipeg's 13-yard line but the Lions settled for Whyte's 21-yarder at 10:23. The five-foot-nine 208-pound Peterson ran 38 yards for his touchdown at 7:25 of the second quarter. Winnipeg got the punt single four minutes later to go up 18-3. Rourke ran two yards for a score with nine seconds remaining in the half. After Wheatfall's 30-yard TD catch at 7:57 of the third quarter, Hatcher made an over-the-shoulder grab for his 77-yard score. Whyte's 37-yard field goal squeezed the score to 28-20 at 11:28. Demski hauled in a four-yard TD catch in the corner of the end zone at 3:48 of the fourth. Winnipeg got another turnover off a fumbled B.C. kickoff return, but Castillo went wide on his field-goal attempt and the ball was run out. B.C. Lions: Buck Pierce returns to Winnipeg for first time as visiting coach
Leave it to his old Winnipeg Blue Bomber buddy Doug Brown to have a little fun with Buck Pierce's first trip back to town as head coach of the B.C. Lions. Article content Winnipeg (0-0), who had the Week I bye, open their CFL regular season Thursday (5:30 p.m.) at home against B.C. (1-0). The Lions are coming off an impressive 31-14 win over the Edmonton Elks on Saturday at B.C. Place in Pierce's debut at the helm. Article content Article content Article content A former Lions quarterback, Pierce signed on as bench boss with B.C. in the off-season after a decade as a Winnipeg assistant coach, including the past four years as their offensive coordinator. Article content Brown, the longtime Bomber star defensive lineman turned radio analyst, maintains that it won't be odd to see Pierce on the visiting sideline at Princess Auto Stadium, because his CFL playing career began in B.C. and therefore 'it makes sense that his head-coaching would start there too.' Article content Then Brown took a little playful poke at the matter. He can be excused. There's a connection there. He and Pierce were teammates for Brown's final two years with Winnipeg. Brown has covered the team ever since. Pierce, as it happens, met his wife Lori at a barbecue that Brown was hosting. Article content 'No matter where Buck is coaching, he's a Winnipeg guy now, and he knows it,' Brown, 50, quipped. Article content For his part, Pierce did his best this week to play down the whole thing, to try to keep it from taking up all the attention. Article content 'It's the next game on the schedule for us,' Pierce, 43, said. 'Winnipeg is a good football team. We have to execute and we've got to play smart. We've got to focus. We've got to do the things that relate to winning. Article content Article content 'For me, that's my past. I enjoyed my time there. I'm excited to walk back into that building with the players we have in our locker-room.' Article content This wasn't a messy split. It's nothing like that. Mike O'Shea is firmly entrenched as Winnipeg's coach and at 54 years of age it would seem he's got lots of runway left to keep going. Coming to B.C. was an opportunity Pierce wasn't about to get in Winnipeg. Article content Article content That said, there's clearly a great many ties there for Pierce. Pierce's first start with the Lions even came in Winnipeg, with him pinch-hitting for an injured Dave Dickenson in a 32-5 win over the Bombers on Aug. 10, 2006. Article content Pierce played with B.C. from 2005 to 2009, went to Winnipeg in 2010, and was there until midway through the 2013 campaign, when he was traded back to B.C. That wound up his final year as a player.

Tickets now on sale for Grey Cup in Winnipeg
CFL fans can now get their hands on tickets for the 112th Grey Cup. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced Friday that tickets were on sale as of 10 a.m. for the championship game being held in Winnipeg on Nov. 16 at Princess Auto Stadium. 'This will be more than a game—it's a week-long celebration of Canadian football, culture, and community, and it all starts with securing your seat to the biggest game of the year,' said Wade Miller, the president and CEO of the Bombers, in a news release. With the purchase of the Grey Cup ticket, people will also receive early access to Team Social Passes, which get people into the 2025 Grey Cup Festival Concert Series and the Team Party Rooms. People can buy tickets through Ticketmaster.
