Providers say it's time to rethink alternate education
The founder of one of the country's longest-running alternative education organisations, is urging a re-think on how the sector is viewed, and the students that come through its doors. Over the past fifteen years, approximately 23,000 young people have gone through alternative education (AE) programmes. These are programmes that sit outside mainstream schools, aim to provide young people with a quality education and to support them into education, training, or work. Lloyd Martin, who founded provider Praxis in the 1990s recently completed research into the experiences and perceptions of young people in AE. He says the programmes, which run off of a fraction of the funding that mainstream schools get, are a lifeline. Meanwhile, on Auckland's North Shore, Cameron Fisher is running a pilot programme for pupils too young for AE programmes. He explains why it's working. Students learning in a school classroom. Partnership continues the company's ongoing commitment to support educator pathways MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 30, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- provider of an award-winning online platform for K-12 curriculum, college courses and test preparation, has partnered with the Educator Registered Apprenticeship (ERA) Intermediary, managed by RTI International, to support teacher apprenticeship programs across the country. This strategic partnership is designed to improve the educator workforce pipeline, specifically by providing supported pathways through apprenticeship programs. Registered Apprenticeship programs in education have grown in recent years to help expand low-cost pathways into the teaching profession. Through this partnership, will provide 1,000 licenses to its platform that will be distributed to teacher apprenticeship programs that are engaged with the ERA Intermediary and do not have the resources to access test preparation courses at scale. "Our mission at the ERA is to help organizations recruit, train, and retain highly qualified educators using an apprenticeship model. This requires supporting apprentices through the program by addressing barriers to completion," noted Joyce Milling, ERA state coach. "When we met with an employer partner in Michigan, it became clear that passing the state licensure exam remained a barrier for a few apprentices. Although we had secured funding for the apprentices to re-take the state exams, we still needed a better way for the apprentices to prepare for those exams and wanted to find a proven method for that preparation – that's where stepped in with the solution." In a recent research project with ETS and teacher candidates with sufficient use of for test preparation consistently passed the Praxis exam at higher rates than candidates with less usage. For example, among re-takers in NC, those who met usage standards had a 1.7X higher pass rate. "With today's educator shortages, it's important that we provide solutions to aspiring teachers to help reduce barriers to entering the classroom," said Dana Bryson, SVP of Social Impact, "By offering comprehensive test preparation tools and resources, we can support a broader pool of teacher candidates – helping to create a stronger education system that benefits all students." Binghamton Photo (1st floor gallery – adjacent to the Bundy Museum): Au Naturel. Brian Taborne. From Taborne: 'Au Naturel focuses on natural things in natural environments. I've noticed over my time of taking photos that I enjoy presenting the world as it is and not manipulating anything in camera or after the photo is taken. Natural and practical lighting is something I strive for, as it's how we all see the world on a daily basis. The world isn't seen in studio lighting. One principle I've tried to stick to on my photography journey is taking photos of light first and objects second. I am a firm believer that any environment or object, no matter how objectively 'ugly' it is, can look beautiful with the right lighting and composition. Strong sunlight hitting some healthy, green foliage in the summertime is a personal favorite lighting condition of mine.' (6pm-9pm).
