Scored 259, then got injured, THIS batter adds to Team India's headache ahead of Leeds Test, what happens to the playing XI now...

Team India has been dealt a fresh setback ahead of the first Test against England, as uncertainty looms over their playing XI. The concern has arisen due to an injury to one of their key batters. The countdown to the first Test at Leeds has just begun, and Team India has suffered an untimely blow as one of the most-in-form batters on the tour, Karun Nair, has suffered an injury on his rib. This happened in a net session when he was hit on the ribcage with a popping delivery by pacer Prasidh Krishna throwing his availability in the opening Test in doubt. The Indian Test team had generated high levels of excitement concerning Karun Nair who came back to the team after an absence of almost eight years. He had returned at the international stage after a Test match debut way back in 2016, and his resurgence was considered to be a second chance to his international career. That momentum can now be slowed down by the injury and his long awaited comeback into the playing XI can also be halted at a time when he appeared set for a recall. Nair had already provided solid grounds to stake his right to play with the bat, having notched 259 runs in three innings in two wam-up matches against the England Lions. He became the sole Indian batsman on tour that scored a double century in English conditions, and thus he has been given the strong candidate in the middle-order slots in the Test XI. His present form has proved him to be an invaluable asset going into the series. The team management has not given an official medical statement yet on the extent to which Karun Nair has hurt his ribs. It does not seem to be very serious, and sources in the team are secretive. His camp is optimistic that he will get back in time to play in the first Test. The problem in this case is that India will have to find alternatives to the position either at No. 5 or No. 6, in case Karun Nair is not given a chance. This means that Abhimanyu Easwaran could be back in consideration of a place in the playing XI. Although Easwaran is best used as a top order player, his experience in domestic cricket may count towards his advantage. This is a bad turn of events in the redemption story of Karun Nair. He has the reputation of scoring a triple century in 2016 since then has not been able to maintain a spot in the side. The Leeds Test was turning out to be an opportunity at rewriting that script. Then, should it be eliminated, it will not only postpone his comeback, but it would further prolong the wait to another opportunity in Test redemption.

Gill, KL Rahul, others reflect on English conditions

Leeds, June 18 (UNI) Ahead of the much-anticipated five-Test series against England beginning June 20, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday released a video on social media platform X, offering fans a rare window into the thoughts and emotions of India players as they prepare for the demanding English conditions. The video, featuring top Indian cricketers including Shubman Gill, Prasidh Krishna, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shardul Thakur, and Karun Nair, reflects a mix of tactical insight, nostalgia, and admiration for the English cricketing atmosphere. "The Dukes ball—that's number one," said Shubman Gill, pointing to the unique challenge of playing red-ball cricket in England. "The weather's always changing—exciting but tough. And then there's the atmosphere of the ground—it's something special." Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna echoed this sentiment: "First, it's the Dukes ball, then the weather. But I love walking around the city with a good cup of coffee, it calms the nerves and lets you soak in the vibe of England." All-rounder Washington Sundar highlighted India's recent successes on English soil, adding, "Swing and seam are key here. But we've been doing well in these conditions, and that builds confidence. Plus, the food's great!" Sai Sudharsan added a lighter note, saying, "It's the weather, hot chocolate, and the Dukes ball for me, that's England." Senior batsman KL Rahul described the English summer as a cricketer's dream: "It really feels like proper Test cricket in England. The summer here is unlike anything back home. When the sun's out, the conditions are just perfect—it's a joy to play." He also noted, "There's so much to explore outside cricket, great restaurants, cafes, it helps you unwind." Karun Nair reflected on the scenic side of the tour, saying, "There's a rich cultural character to these places, with beautiful houses, green spaces, and a distinct English charm. You feel like you're part of something classic." Yashasvi Jaiswal kept it simple: "Beautiful. Lord's. Houses. That's what comes to mind." Shardul Thakur, known for his all-round flair, shared a poetic image: "The greenery here is unmatched. I often picture myself holding a cup of coffee, enjoying the weather and everything England has to offer." As Team India brace for a challenging series, the video serves as both a morale-booster and a strategic tone-setter. With the Dukes ball, swinging conditions, and historic venues setting the stage, Team India appears not only prepared but also emotionally attuned to the rhythms of English Test cricket. UNI BDN RN

Shardul Thakur or Nitish Reddy, who should start in England? Ravi Shastri answers

Former India cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri has revealed his pick between Shardul Thakur and Nitish Kumar Reddy to start in the playing XI for England Tests. India are set to take on England in a five-match Test series beginning from June 20. Ahead of the all-important rubber, the team management faces a huge dilemma about whom to pick, Shardul and Nitish for the first few Nitish was impressive with the bat in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Shardul has been in phenomenal form in the tour matches leading up to the series. Recently, Ravi Shastri shared his views on the debate and said that he would pick Shardul as his first choice due to his ability to bowl more."I would go with three fast bowlers, (plus) Shardul Thakur. I know it'll be a tough one between Shardul and Nitish Reddy, but you have to see who bowls how much. If Reddy is going to give you 12, 14 overs, then he might get the nod because of his batting," Shastri said on ICC Review. Furthermore, Shastri also named his three-men pace attack, picking Prasidh Krishna alongside Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. The former head coach also stated that the team management could also go with Arshdeep Singh, if conditions are overcast in Leeds and are conducive to three fast bowlers would be, I would go with Prasidh Krishna, I would go with Mohammed Siraj and of course Jasprit Bumrah. In Leeds, if it's overcast and it's cloudy, there might be the temptation of going with the left-armer Ashdeep Singh as well. So it will be Prasad, Prasid Krishna/Arshdeep but the other two will be Siraj and Bumrah,' he Arshdeep and Prasidh Krishna haven't played a single Test in England, however the former has experience of playing county cricket under his belt, having played for Kent. Hence, it remains to be seen if the team management will hand a debut cap to Arshdeep or will pick either of Akash Deep or Prasidh Krishna, who have played a few Tests in their career so far.

Sai Sudharshan received his maiden Test call-up while Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur made a comeback. Another striking feature of the squad was the presence of five fast bowlers - Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh. Now, according to a report in Dainik Jagran, Harshit Rana has also been added to the squad. If the report is true, he will become the 19th member of the squad. "It's important for all of us to get this game time": Prasidh Krishna on playing intra-squad game

Beckenham [UK], June 14 (ANI): Ahead of India's Test series against England, right-arm seamer Prasidh Krishna featured in the intra-squad game between India and India A and explained the importance of the game for the players. Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill and KL Rahul were among the runs while Shardul Thakur delivered a solid performance with the ball on Day 1 of the intra-squad match between the Indian senior side and India A at Beckenham on Friday. Speaking about the intra-squad game between India and India A in a video posted by BCCI, Prasidh Krishna said, 'I think it's really important for all of us to get this game time, because some of them are coming from the A game. Getting some time on feet is really important. That's what's going about today as well. Looks like a good, nice hard pitch. 'Bowlers have been in the game all throughout, have been bowling some really good spells. Batters are also showing some character. So it's always good when you're competing against each other as well. All of us are excited and enjoying what's happening. All of us are getting together after a while. So a lot of memories, a lot of cricket,' the fast bowler added. KL Rahul had also slammed scores of 116 and 51 during the second unofficial Test against England Lions at Northampton. Gill, who has a poor average of 14.66 in England and has scored just 88 runs in six innings across three matches here with a best score of 28, will take plenty of confidence from his knock. Thakur, who scored knocks of 27 (in first unofficial Test) and 19 and 34 (in the second unofficial Test) against England Lions and also took two wickets against them, also got some valuable game time as he battles a young Nitish Kumar Reddy for the spot of a pace-bowling all-rounder in the team. India's first Test against England at Leeds from June 20 will mark the start of a new era under newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill, as he aims to lead a new-look team to glory following the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Tests and Ravichandran Ashwin from international cricket. The series will be held from June to August 2025, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
