India vs England: Should Jasprit Bumrah play all five tests? What will India's bowling attack look like without him?

Seven days. Seven days. Eight days. Three days. That is not code language. It's the minimum number of rest days between each Test on India's five-match tour of England, starting 20 June. And minimum is what you need to plan for when you have the world's best bowler in your team—and he must be workload-managed. Here's what India's Test schedule looks like for this tour: 20–24 June: First Test, Leeds 2–6 July: Second Test, Birmingham 10–14 July: Third Test, Lord's 23–27 July: Fourth Test, Manchester 31 July–4 August: Fifth Test, The Oval Assuming all five Tests go the full distance, a rather generous assumption, the gaps between each match are, respectively, seven, seven, eight, and three days. Will those be enough? Jasprit Bumrah is a national treasure, but he needs to be handled with care. How India's Test series in England unfolds will depend largely on how Bumrah performs. But the issue for India is that Bumrah won't be a starter in every single Test. At the pre-departure press conference, coach Gautam Gambhir indicated Bumrah would play only three Tests. 'We haven't taken that call. Which three games is he going to play?' Gambhir had said in Mumbai on 5 June. 'We are going to have a discussion with him, and depending on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well, and that is important.' Looking at the schedule, it seems clear that Bumrah can't realistically play both the fourth and fifth Tests, given the short three-day turnaround between them. Between Old Trafford (Manchester) and The Oval (London), India might prefer to field Bumrah in Manchester, as it is traditionally more seam-friendly than The Oval. Bumrah should almost certainly play the first Test. So, if he is to be used in only three games, the most logical choices are the first, third, and fourth Tests. The bigger question: Is there a way for Bumrah to play a fourth Test? If so, the best option might be to have him play the first three and then the fifth. Each of the first three Tests has at least a week-long gap, assuming they all go the full five days. In all likelihood, a couple might finish earlier, offering Bumrah extra recovery time. Of course, the final decision will be made by the team management and Bumrah himself, depending on how the series evolves and what his workload looks like. India has ample seam-bowling options on tour: Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Akash Deep, and Shardul Thakur. Siraj is the natural leader of the attack in Bumrah's absence. Prasidh showed in IPL 2025 that he has gained greater control over his length; once he nails that consistently, he becomes a potent force. Prasidh also gives India the tall, hit-the-deck bowler they have lacked when coming up against such attacks on pitches designed to suit them more. The remaining three pacers offer distinct strengths, giving India the flexibility to adapt. For swing and seam, there's Akash Deep. For a left-arm angle, there's Arshdeep. For batting depth and control, there's Shardul. India could also choose to go with four seamers in their XI. Among spinners, Kuldeep Yadav is the biggest wicket-taking threat, while Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar offer more with the bat. Without Bumrah, India should strongly consider Kuldeep. That decision could influence their pace combination as well—if Kuldeep is picked and the batting looks thin, Shardul may come in to balance the side. Bumrah is unique and irreplaceable. Trying to find a direct replacement won't work. What India must do is build a bowling attack capable of taking 20 wickets. With the options they have, that is still very much possible.

Dropped For England Tests, Star Batter Scores 101 In Intra-Squad Match

Last Updated: Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a duck, Sarfaraz Khan retired after a hundred in India's intra-squad game. Star India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a duck, whereas Sarfaraz Khan was retired out after scoring a hundred in India's intra-squad game in Beckenham on Saturday, June 14, according to a report in The Indian Express. The team is gearing up for a gruelling five-match Test series against England, starting June 20 in Leeds. While BCCI had informed on Friday that KL Rahul and skipper Shubman Gill had scored half-centuries on Day 1 of the game, with Shardul Thakur being among the wickets, no such update was provided on Saturday. BCCI although posted a bunch of pictures from the game on the day, where Ravindra Jadeja was seen bowling with Sarfaraz on the crease, and most importantly, ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah was also seen bowling. Just a few blokes enjoying a game of red-ball cricket 🏏 — BCCI (@BCCI) June 14, 2025 The report adds that Abhimanyu Easwaran scored 39, Sai Sudharsan scored just one run less, Washington Sundar batted twice to score a duck and 35, Ishan Kishan was unbeaten on 45, while Shardul was 19*. If Sundar was given two chances to bat, it can be expected that the Indian team management is looking to give him a spot in the XI, which can be achieved only by benching Jadeja. Earlier, pacer Prasidh Krishna said that he has learned to 'switch on" according to the team's requirements and is now looking to carry his rich Indian Premier League form on to the tour of England. Having come back from a long injury layoff, Prasidh displayed excellent form in IPL 2025 and emerged as the league's highest wicket-taker and the winner of the Purple Cap. Prasidh is now chuffed about the five-match Test series against England, beginning at Leeds on June 20, for which the touring party is engaged in an intra-squad game in Beckenham. '(You have to) make sure you are focused when your chance is coming. But you can't be focused for a long time, especially when you are sitting outside, so you make sure you have a bit of fun," Prasidh said while speaking to BCCI. 'When you know you can sense the situation, you make sure you support your team in particular situations, making sure you are being switched on because anything can happen in the game," Prasidh added. Gill, Prasidh lead India's measured Test build-up

London, June 14 (UNI) In a blend of experience, intensity and calm, India's red-ball squad kicked off its preparations for the Test season with clarity of purpose and a relaxed yet focused mindset. As skipper Shubman Gill and fast bowler Prasidh Krishna spoke about the group during their ongoing warm-up fixture, the tone was one of measured intensity and self-awareness, knowing exactly when to switch on. Prasidh, reflecting on the mood in the camp, struck the most inspiring chord when he said: "I think all of us are experienced enough to know when it's time to focus and when to relax. That awareness is what keeps us sharp and ready." As players gathered after weeks of playing in different formats and teams, Krishna noted the value of match exposure and the challenge of adjusting to red-ball rhythms. "It's really important for all of us to get this game time. Some guys are coming off the A match, so just getting time on your feet is key. That's what today has been about as well," he said. He praised the playing conditions and competitive spirit within the group. "It's a nice, hard pitch and the bowlers have been in the game throughout. We've seen some really good spells, and it's great to see people showing character. When you're competing against your own teammates, it lifts everyone's level." On the camaraderie and dressing room atmosphere, Prasidh added, "We're all coming together after a while. A lot of us have shared cricket and memories before, so we're keeping things light. You can't be locked in all the time, especially when you're not in the middle. So, we're making sure to enjoy the company of fun people, but stay ready to switch on when needed." Captain Gill, speaking earlier, echoed the emphasis on team clarity and discipline. "Let's maintain our intensity,' he told the squad. 'When we're building as a group, let's make sure we focus on the key areas — whether it's as a bowling unit or batting unit." Both voices underscored the message that India's red-ball ambitions will be shaped not just by skills, but by mindset — one that values preparation, embraces competition, and knows how to stay grounded amid the grind. India pacer Prasidh Krishna says he has learned to "switch on" as per the team's requirements and is now looking to carry his rich IPL form on to the tour of England. Having come back from a long injury layoff, Prasidh displayed excellent form in the IPL 2025, and emerged as the league's highest wicket-taker and the winner of the Purple Cap. He is now chuffed about the five-match Test series against England, beginning at Leeds on June 20, for which the touring party is currently engaged in an intra-squad match here. "I think all of us are experienced to know when you must switch on and switch off," Prasidh told BCCI TV. He has come back to cricketing action reinvigorated after a long and frustrating wait on the sidelines due to recurrent injuries, which also forced him to go under the knife. One of Gujarat Titans' most influential players in the last IPL, Prasidh said the game time in UK before the big Test series will benefit the team immensely, as players from different franchises and state sides converge for a common cause with the Indian team. "It's really important for all of us to get this game time... because some of them are coming form the 'A' game. Getting some time on field is really important. That's what has happened today as well. "Looks like a good, nice, hard pitch. Bowlers have been in the game all throughout, have been bowling some really good spells. Batsmen also showed some character. It's always good when you are competing against each other as well. "All of us are excited and enjoying what's happening... All of us are getting together after a while, so a lot memories, a lot of cricket each one has played with different teams, coming here, have spent a lot of time before... just try and make sure you keep the environment light," he said after the opening day's play on Friday. As per an update by the BCCI, skipper Shubman Gill and senior player KL Rahul scored half-centuries, while Shardul Thakur was among the wickets on the first day of the match.
