Pradyot hints at exiting coalition over accord implementation delay

Agartala: Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, founder of the TIPRA Motha Party and a key ally of the BJP in Tripura's govt, expressed dissatisfaction with the central and state govts and indicated a potential withdrawal from the coalition. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During a Facebook live on Tuesday, Pradyot reiterated his position, stating he would prefer to leave the ruling alliance rather than retain power if the Tiprasa accord, signed in April 2023 before the general election, was not implemented. He noted that initial discussions with the Centre were positive, but progress stalled thereafter. "It has been 18 months, we are waiting, and I feel this is high time for a forward movement in this direction," Pradyot said. He said his party would soon launch a helpline number to facilitate action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, whom he identified as the biggest threat to Tripura's indigenous communities. "I have instructed the leaders of my party to have the helpline circulated among the people on short notice. We can't let Bangladeshis enter our territory as if we allow them today, tomorrow they will use the resources that are meant for our children," Pradyot said. He added that the initiative aims to expedite information gathering on Bangladeshi nationals, emphasising that no one should take the law into their own hands. "We are waiting for the implementation of the Tiprasa accord. We entered into the ruling alliance only because we had been promised that the accord would be implemented. If I am unable to deliver what I promised to my people, then I have no right to enjoy power. I already had a word with the ministers who represent my party and the majority of the MLAs," he said.

'Can't let Bangladeshis enter our territory': BJP ally Pradyot Debbarman threatens exit from Tripura govt, demands action on tiprasa accord

AGARTALA: BJP's ally in Tripura government and the major political force in tribal areas and hills, TIPRA Motha Party founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, expressed his dissatisfaction over the role of central and state governments, and hinted at walking out of the government. In a Facebook live, Pradyot reiterated his stand and said that he would rather walk away from the ruling coalition than enjoy power if the Tiprasa (tribal) accord, signed last year before the general election, is not implemented. He claimed the talks with the central government were very positive, but after that, things stalled. 'It has been 18 months, we are waiting, and I feel this is high time for a forward movement in this direction,' Pradyot stated. He announced that his party would soon launch a helpline number as a means of communication for action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, which, according to him, emerged as the biggest threat to the indigenous people and communities of Tripura. 'I have instructed the leaders of my party to have the helpline circulated among the people on short notice. We can't let Bangladeshis enter our territory as if we allow them today, tomorrow they will use the resources that are meant for our children,' Pradyot said. He explained that this is basically an attempt on our part to expedite the information gathering on Bangladeshi nationals. No one needs to take the law into their own hands. If someone is found entering Tripura, they can dial our number, and our leaders will communicate the issue with the administration for lawful action. 'We are waiting for the implementation of the Tiprasa accord. We entered into the ruling alliance only because we had been promised that the accord would be implemented. If I am unable to deliver what I promised to my people, then I have no right to enjoy power. I already had words with the ministers who represent my party and the majority of the MLAs,' he mentioned. 'I understand that after the Pahalgam terror attack, it became the top priority of the government. I still have high hopes that Union Home Minister will keep his promise. But, I genuinely feel something is wrong is going on. In Delhi, the talks are very positive, but after that, things get stuck.' Pradyot added.

Tripura min & MLAs call on CS, seek action against Gomati DM

Agartala: A ministerial delegation from CM Manik Saha's administration approached chief secretary J K Sinha on Tuesday, demanding action against Gomati district magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma, a 2017 batch IAS officer from Tripura. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Minister of state (Industries and Commerce) Brishaketu Debbarma headed the delegation, accompanied by Purna Chandra Jamatia, chief executive member (CEM) of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), and five TIPRA Motha MLAs. They requested disciplinary measures against Chakma. The delegation accused Chakma of declining meetings with CEM Jamatia and TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman. They labelled his behaviour as "insubordination" and "disrespect towards constitutional authorities." The group sought firm action to maintain democratic principles and administrative responsibility, stating, "The attitude of Chakma is of utter disrespect to the elected public representatives and arrogance of a public servant, which requires to be taken very seriously." According to a memorandum submitted by the delegation, on May 25, at approximately 8pm, Jamatia and Pradyot visited the DM's official residence in Udaipur to discuss urgent matters, including MGNREGA implementation issues, irregularities in CM Rubber Mission beneficiary selection, and pending forest check dam construction. However, Chakma declined to meet them. The correspondence also mentions that Chakma had ignored over 20 calls from Pradyot in recent months and subsequently blocked both his and CEM Jamatia's contact numbers. "This kind of behaviour is unacceptable, particularly towards a democratically elected leader and constitutional head of an autonomous council. Blocking calls and refusing communication with public representatives is not only unprofessional but also undermines public trust and governance," the document states. They highlighted that the DM's actions contradict administrative principles and requested a formal investigation followed by appropriate penalties.

Tripura CM orders probe against DM for ‘misconduct'

Agartala: Tripura chief minister Manik Saha on Tuesday directed chief secretary JK Sinha to investigate the reported inappropriate behaviour of Gomati district magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma towards TTAADC chief executive member Purna Chandra Jamatia and TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Sunday night. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Pradyot said Chakma declined to meet him despite multiple attempts to discuss an urgent matter concerning a remote tribal village. This situation has sparked strong political responses, with opposition groups criticising the civil servant and suggesting that bureaucrats are exercising excessive authority over elected officials. "I have been calling him for a month, but he didn't have the courtesy to pick up the call, or to get back. Finally, we went to his quarters while returning from the village. He refused to meet us, and his security people told us that the DM advised us to meet him in the office with proper appointment, which is derogatory and a sign of arrogance," he said. Upon returning from Delhi, the CMO confirmed that the CM called upon the chief secretary to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and present findings promptly. Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury denounced Chakma's behaviour, stating that both he and Pradyot had made numerous unsuccessful attempts to meet the DM. "They were compelled to go and meet him at an inconvenient hour because he refused to engage during official time. Yet, even then, he turned them away. At the very least, he could have asked them to come later. This reeks of British-era bureaucratic arrogance," Chaudhury said, mentioning his previous unfavourable interactions with the officer. Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman expressed support for Pradyot, pointing to concerning signs of administrative overreach in the state.

Tripura CM orders inquiry against DM for his alleged misconduct with elected representative

Agartala, May 27 (UNI) Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday asked Chief Secretary J K Sinha to initiate an inquiry into the alleged misconduct of District Magistrate of Gomati Tarit Kanti Chakma with Chief Executive Member of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Purna Chandra Jamatia and founder of BJP's ally TIPRA Motha and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Sunday night. Pradyot alleged that DM Chakma refused to meet him despite his repeated requests to discuss an emergent issue of a distant tribal village. The incident has triggered sharp political reactions, with opposition parties slamming the bureaucrat and alleging bureaucracy is overpowering the legislators in the state. 'I have been calling him for a month, but he didn't have the courtesy to pick up the call or to get back. Finally, we went to his quarters while returning from the village. He refused to meet us, and his security people told us, DM advised us to meet him in the office with the proper appointment, which is derogatory and a sign of arrogance,' Pradyot said. The Chief Minister's Office stated that, after returning from Delhi, the CM summoned the Chief Secretary and instructed him to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and submit a report at the earliest. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury criticised Chakma's conduct, claiming both Pradyot and he had made several attempts to meet the DM, all of which were allegedly ignored. 'They were compelled to go meet him at an inconvenient hour because he refused to engage during official time. Yet, even then, he turned them away. At the very least, he could have asked them to come later. This reeks of British-era bureaucratic arrogance,' Chaudhury said, recalling his own negative experiences with the officer. Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman also backed Pradyot, alleging a troubling trend of 'officer raj' in the state. 'The DM told his security personnel to inform Pradyot that he would not meet at home and only entertain meetings at the office. This kind of attitude from a public servant is unacceptable. DMs are duty-bound to listen to elected representatives, especially on matters of public interest,' Barman said. UNI BB ARN GNK 1448
