‘28 Years Later' is a coming-of-age sequel with an identity crisis
For the most part, though, '28 Years Later' is a coming-of-age tale centered around Spike (Alfie Williams), a 12-year-old boy born after the outbreak. Spike is (almost) ready to trade in his Power Rangers toys for bows and arrows in order to join his very manly father, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), for his first trip foraging the mainland, now filled with new dangers like the 'Alpha' (infected who are more intelligent and boast superhuman strength). They must also care for Spike's mother and Jamie's wife, Isla (Jodie Comer), who suffers from an illness causing hallucinations and memory problems. From left: Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his son Spike (Alfie Williams) in "28 Years Later." Miya Mizuno Advertisement Like the original, which captivated audiences with its intimate portrayal of a found family coming together at the end of the world, '28 Years Later' shines best when it focuses on the humanity of its core characters. The complicated father-son relationship drives the first half of the film, as the stern but loving Jamie teaches his son brutal lessons of living among the infected. 'The more you kill, the easier it gets,' he tells Spike in a scene where they find an infected man with a bag over his head strung up in a house and are forced to shoot him. It's one of several emotionally charged and violent moments that start to erode Spike's innocence. Their bond frays after their harrowing return home, culminating in Spike learning a fact kept hidden by Jamie: There's a mysterious doctor on the mainland (Ralph Fiennes) who might be able to help his sick mother. That secret and other morally questionable decisions shatter Spike's image of his dad. He sets out with his mother in search of the doctor, leaving Jamie behind. From left: Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his son Spike (Alfie Williams) in "28 Years Later." Miya Mizuno Williams brings the raw emotion needed for these pivotal sequences (in one heartbreaking moment, Spike recoils after getting slapped by his father), and, overall, turns in a standout performance. Taylor-Johnson and Comer are quite powerful, too, in their parental roles; I wouldn't have minded more screen time from either. But '28 Years Later' too often veers away from this compelling family drama in favor of zombie-killing spectacle, with blood splatters and bullet-time freezes attached to nearly every slash, shot, and bite (it gets old fast). Some scenes come off more like mindless grindhouse gore than something I was expecting from the filmmakers behind the experimental, claustrophobic original. Advertisement The new film also shifts the antagonist role almost exclusively onto the zombies, like a generic monster movie. But most baffling is the film's uneven use of humor. With '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,' another sequel written by Garland and directed by Nia DaCosta ( From left: Spike (Alfie Williams), Isla (Jodie Comer), and Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) in "28 Years Later." Miya Mizuno There are other odd moments of humor, too, often from Fiennes's Dr. Kelson, who is not the menacing presence we're led to believe. He's a boogie man turned eccentric sage of sorts for Spike, reminding me of Old Man Marley from 'Home Alone,' but if he stumbled into 'Mad Max.' The iodine-stained doctor is not so scary once you get to know him, made palpable thanks to Fiennes's charm. The biggest laughs, however, belong to Edvin Ryding's Erik, a smart-mouthed Swedish soldier stranded in the quarantined country. Erik and Spike have a genuinely funny exchange about all the new inventions that locked-down Britain has missed out on over the decades, like smartphones and lip fillers. Erik's frank reactions to the zombie mayhem bring a few chuckles too, but his brief cameo felt better suited for a franchise like 'Zombieland.' '28 Years Later' isn't sure what kind of movie it wants to be: Action-comedy? Gory grindhouse? Serious family drama? Despite some interesting concepts and commendable lead performances, its identity problems alienate. It seems like the years have finally caught up. At Alamo Drafthouse Seaport, AMC Boston Common, AMC Causeway, AMC South Bay Center, Coolidge Corner Theatre, Landmark Kendall Square, suburbs. 115 minutes. Power Rangers & Ninja Turtles New Crossover — GeekTyrant
The Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles are no strangers to each other and I guess it's time for another crossover. BOOM! Studios and IDW are teaming up with writer Ryan Parrott ( Vicarious ) and illustrator Vincenzo Federici ( Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ) to bring fans Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III . This is the third crossover comic series penned by Parrott and so I'm sure he's got something great cooked up for us fans and while I'm not very familiar with Federici, a look at his Instagram tells me that we've got an incredible creative duo. With Rita and Krang defeated, the bad guys aren't cutting the Rangers and Turtles no slack! Lord Zedd and Shredder have a new plan to take down the radical teen heroes, and if they don't act carefully, they may just succeed. I really liked the first Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series but sadly missed the second series. I'm curious what Zedd and Shredder will get up to. My first instinct is something with the Dark Rangers that were a great idea with just awful execution in season two of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers . Maybe they'll finally get justice? You can read Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1 on August 13 from your local comic shop. There's no word on how many issues to expect, but I think it's safe to assume that it will be like the previous two series and run for five issues. What are your predictions for the third crossover story?

Devil May Cry Season 2: Everything we know so far
By Aman Shukla Published on May 24, 2025, 17:30 IST Last updated May 24, 2025, 10:52 IST Netflix's Devil May Cry anime has taken the streaming world by storm, delivering high-octane action and a gripping storyline that has fans clamoring for more. Following the explosive first season, which premiered on April 3, 2025, Netflix quickly confirmed Devil May Cry Season 2, much to the delight of fans worldwide. With a cliffhanger ending that left viewers on edge, anticipation for the next chapter is at an all-time high. Here's everything we know so far about Devil May Cry Season 2. Devil May Cry Season 2 Release Date Speculation While Netflix has officially renewed Devil May Cry for a second season, an exact release date has not been confirmed. Based on the production timeline of Adi Shankar's previous hit, Castlevania , which typically saw a 15-month gap between seasons, we can speculate a potential release window for Devil May Cry Season 2 in summer or autumn 2026. Cast and Characters The voice cast for Devil May Cry Season 2 is expected to see the return of key actors from Season 1, though some changes may occur due to the passing of notable performers. Confirmed and potential returning cast members include: Johnny Yong Bosch as Dante: The charismatic demon hunter, voiced by Bosch, will remain the central figure. Bosch, known for roles in Bleach and Power Rangers , brings a fresh yet faithful take to Dante. Scout Taylor-Compton as Lady: Despite mixed fan reactions to her portrayal, Lady is likely to return, though some X posts suggest her role may be reduced in favor of focusing on Dante and Vergil. Robbie Daymond as Vergil: Vergil's emergence as a key antagonist sets the stage for a significant role in Season 2, with Daymond's performance expected to capture the character's intensity. Hoon Lee as White Rabbit: While the White Rabbit was defeated in Season 1, the series could introduce new villains or revisit his legacy. Chris Coppola as Enzo Ferino: A supporting character who may see further development. Plot Expectations for Devil May Cry Season 2 Devil May Cry Season 1 ended on a dramatic note, with Dante captured and placed in cryostasis by DARKCOM, while his brother Vergil emerged as a formidable antagonist, declaring war on humanity as 'The Knight' under King Mundus. Season 2 is expected to dive deeper into the complex relationship between Dante and Vergil, exploring their sibling rivalry and contrasting paths. The narrative will likely focus on Dante's escape from DARKCOM's facility and his mission to confront Vergil and thwart the demonic invasion. Aman Shukla is a post-graduate in mass communication . Hasbro Found Another Way to Show You the Original ‘Power Rangers' Again
The future of Power Rangers has been in limbo for a while now. Ever since the conclusion of Cosmic Fury—with no new shows on the horizon (up until very recently), scrapped reboot plans that could've severed the series' historic link with the world of Super Sentai, and the company auctioning off the franchise's history—just what Hasbro wants to do with its inheritance of the superhero franchise has been in doubt. Turns out, for now at least, the answer is the same as it ever was: what if we just found a way to do Mighty Morphin' nostalgia all over again? Such is the case with today's announcement that Hasbro has launched Power Rangers: Re-Ignition on YouTube, which might almost sound like it's new material until you see that it is simply just the first season of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers uploaded in Youtube's 4K resolution. Two to three 'all-new' episodes will release weekly on Hasbro's YouTube channels until October. Although no mention is made in the official press release that accompanied the release of the series on YouTube, Re-Ignition had previously been described as using generative AI to provide its 'enhanced' visuals at New York Toy Fair earlier this year. Hasbro actually soft-launched Re-Ignition a few weeks ago via the Mighty Morphin' Minute, truncated recap-style releases of episodes broken down into short-form video for release on platforms like YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and Tiktok. At least that cleaned-up footage is now getting released in its original form, but still, it's not exactly as 'all-new' as the company describes. But is it enough to get Power Rangers fans to bide their time for any news about the series' future? We've got until October at the least to see.
