PolyU chief eyes exchanges for all students
PolyU chief eyes exchanges for all students PolyU president Teng Jin-guang said more exchanges with the mainland and overseas countries would teach students more about the nation and the world. Photo: RTHK Polytechnic University president Teng Jin-guang has expressed hopes that all PolyU students will have the opportunity of going on exchange programmes to the mainland or to overseas countries by the 2027-28 academic year, to learn more about the nation and the world. Speaking on RTHK's NSL Chronicles III programme on Saturday, Teng said the university has done a lot to encourage its students to go on such programmes. "Of course I hope some students can go to the mainland to learn more about the country, and some can go global," he said. "When there was a storm in society in 2019, it was rather difficult to engage in international exchanges. It's smoother now." Teng also noted that his university had made courses on Chinese history and culture mandatory three years ago, saying he doesn't think local primary or secondary schools provide enough teaching on these subjects He also said his university faced no restrictions under the National Security Law in recruiting overseas talent, noting that it has hired 15 non-local scholars since 2021 under a government scheme to attract talent in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Teng added that he hasn't seen any changes at all in the level of academic freedom in Hong Kong over the past few years, noting that such rights are protected under the city's national security legislation.

3 Hong Kong universities move up in QS top 50 rankings, with HKU jumping to 11th place
Three Hong Kong universities have climbed in education analytics firm QS's rankings of the world's top 50 institutions, with the University of Hong Kong (HKU) jumping to 11th place. Quacquarelli Symonds, also known as QS, released its new 2026 rankings on Thursday. HKU rose six spots from last year's rankings, moving from 17th to 11th place. It is the second-highest ranked university in Asia after the National University of Singapore, which came in 8th. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) ranked 32nd, up from 36th place last year. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) saw its position move from 44th to 47th place. Two other universities, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), made the top 100 list. PolyU ranked 54th, while CityU ranked 63rd. In a statement on Thursday, a spokesperson for the Education Bureau said the city's university rankings were encouraging and a testament to the government's long-term investment in higher education. The spokesperson said the rankings reflected Hong Kong's 'attractiveness as a hub for international talent.' Last month, Chief Executive John Lee pledged 'full support' to universities in attracting foreign students after US President Donald Trump moved to restrict the enrolment of international students at American universities. Some universities have announced streamlined application procedures for students affected by the US president's new policies. In the Chinese-language statement on Thursday, the government said it would continue to promote the diversity of the city's universities. It is 'not only to strengthen Hong Kong's development momentum, but also to actively contribute to [China]'s development,' the spokesperson added.

Four HK universities in top 100 on sustainability list
Four HK universities in top 100 on sustainability list Four universities in Hong Kong are among the top 100 institutions worldwide in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025. Photo: RTHK Four universities in Hong Kong have finished in the top 100 of a global ranking by a British-based publication that measures institutions' efforts in sustainability. The annual Times Higher Education Impact Rankings assess the performance of universities in four key areas – research, stewardship, outreach and teaching – in advancing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The top three universities in this year's rankings are Western Sydney University in Australia, the United Kingdom's University of Manchester and Kyungpook National University in South Korea. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) comes in at 19th, unchanged from last year and once again the top institution in the SAR. "This recognition underscores HKUST's dedication to integrating sustainability into our research, education and operations," said vice-president for administration and business Tam Kar-yan. Polytechnic University (PolyU) has climbed to 56th place after finishing 77th last year, with president Teng Jin-guang saying the rankings affirm the institution's internationally recognised efforts in promoting sustainable development. "PolyU will continue to foster interdisciplinary collaborations and promote global sustainable development that contributes to the advancement of Hong Kong, the nation and the world," he said. Baptist University is in the top 100 for the first time after rising to number 69. A spokesperson said the result "will serve as a benchmark for the university's continuous commitment to enhancing its teaching, learning and research endeavours". Chinese University, however, is the only one in Hong Kong that has fallen in the rankings, down to 71st place from 44th last year. A spokesperson said the university is still among the top 50 in five indicators such as "quality education". Lingnan University has achieved the number one position for "quality education" – the first higher education institution in the SAR to reach the top spot in any category. University president Joe Qin called the result an "outstanding achievement". "Being No 1 in the world for quality education confirms Lingnan's unwavering commitment to delivering top-tier education on a global scale," Qin said. "It also highlights Lingnan's dedication to fostering lifelong learning opportunities across diverse sectors of society through innovative teaching, effective knowledge transfer and active community engagement."
