‘Adolescence' Dethrones 'Stranger Things 4' As Netflix's Second Most-Watched English-Language Series

One-take wonder Adolescence is one step closer to becoming a Netflix chart-topper. The British limited series has racked up a total of 141.2 million views since its debut 80 days ago on 14 March, surpassing its previous fourth-place result of 114 million views to outpace Stranger Things 4 as the second most-watched English-language TV show ever on the streamer. Only Wednesday , starring Jenna Ortega ( You, 2022's Scream ), stands in its way with 252.1 million views in its first 91 days of debut. Still, the numbers fall shy of the current No.1 across both English and non-English language titles, with Squid Game Season 1 scoring 265.2 million views. Season 2, now at 192 million views and counting, is sandwiched between Wednesday and Adolescence . Led by first-time actor Owen Cooper, the latter centres on a 13-year-old named Jamie Miller who is arrested after the murder of a girl in his school. It became known for shooting each of its four episodes in one continuous take, and also stars Stephen Graham ( Gangs of New York , Peaky Blinders ), Ashley Walters ( Top Boy , Doctor Who ), and Erin Doherty ( The Crown , Chloe ) as Jamie's father Eddie, detective inspector Luke Bascombe, and psychologist Briony Ariston, respectively. While hailed as a limited series, the crime drama may land a second season, with Netflix and Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B Entertainment, in early talks about continuing Jamie's story. It's hardly the only name on the list getting a (potential) sequel — as announced during the recent Netflix Tudum event, Stranger Things Season 5 will end things in three parts, scheduled for 26 November, Christmas Day, and New Year's Eve. As for Wednesday , Season 2 is arriving in two parts: first on 6 August, then on 3 September, after Squid Game Season 3 debuts on 27 June. Bono Rocks Cannes With 7-Minute Standing Ovation for ‘Stories of Surrender'

Bono was on hand at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday night for the world premiere of his new Apple documentary, 'Bono: Stories of Surrender,' where the U2 frontman received a 7-minute standing ovation following the screening. Bono grew emotional during the minutes-long ovation. As the applause began to wane, he opened his speech with a few words and a promise to speak fluent French next year. I'm an Irishman. I'm not even a self-made man,' Bono told the crowd. 'You wrote this story. The Edge wrote this story. Adam [Clayton] and Larry [Mullen Jr.] wrote this story. [Paul] McGuinness wrote this story.' At one point, Bono saluted actor and director Sean Penn, who was in the audience, and said, 'If I was in the trenches, like real trenches, as opposed to ones on a movie set, I'd want to be with Sean Penn in those trenches. He was there for me. Thank you again.' The Andrew Dominik-directed film documents the U2 frontman's one-man show of the same name, which is based on his celebrated memoir 'Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story' and its accompanying tour. According to its logline, the doc 'pulls back the curtain on a remarkable life and the family, friends and faith that have challenged and sustained him, revealing personal stories about his journey as a son, father, husband, activist and rockstar. Along with never-before-seen, exclusive footage from the Beacon Theatre shows, the film features Bono performing many of the iconic U2 songs that have shaped his life and legacy.' Bono is no stranger to Cannes, having owned a residence in the south of France since the '90s. U2 also premiered the band's concert film, 'U2 3D,' during a midnight screening at the festival in 2007, before which they gave an iconic performance on the steps of the Palais. 'Bono: Stories of Surrender' hails from RadicalMedia and Plan B Entertainment, with RadicalMedia's Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick producing alongside Plan B's Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. Bono also executive produces with Jennifer Pitcher and Kelly McNamara. Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick ('Summer of Soul,' 'Hamilton,' 'David Byrne's American Utopia') produce alongside Academy Award-winning Plan B Entertainment's Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner (upcoming 'F1,' 'Moonlight,' '12 Years a Slave'). Bono executive produces with Jennifer Pitcher ('Kiss The Future') and Kelly McNamara ('V-U2 an Immersive Concert Film at Sphere Las Vegas'). Bono Bares His Soul for Andrew Dominik in ‘Stories of Surrender' Trailer

It's a beautiful day for U2 fans, as Apple has unveiled the first trailer for 'Bono: Stories of Surrender,' the filmed version of the band's frontman Bono's one-man stage show as directed by Andrew Dominik. For Dominik, this is the filmmaker's first movie since 2022's 'Blonde,' the critically panned Marilyn Monroe biopic starring Ana de Armas. But the film is also set to premiere as a special screening at Cannes before it debuts on Apple TV+. More from IndieWire 'A Desert' Is the Product of a Life Spent Restoring Classic Films Chloë Sevigny on Her Pitch for Luca Guadagnino to Reprise Her 'American Psycho' Role and the Radiance of Julia Roberts The film debuts on the streamer on May 30 and will also be available via the Apple Vision Pro headset and Apple Immersive Video. It is the first feature-length film made available in the 180-degree VR format, featuring both 8K picture and spatial audio. 'Stories of Surrender' is based on Bono's memoir 'Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story,' with which he had an accompanying book tour and theater tour made into a one-man show 'Stories of Surrender: An Evening of Words, Music and Some Mischief…' Or, as he says in the trailer, his 'quarter-man' show, a dig at him saying these are the 'tall tales of a short rock star' (he's 5-foot-6-inches tall). Shot entirely in black and white, 'Stories of Surrender' details Bono's life's journey, his relationships with his wife, his parents, friends, and his faith, and he discusses some of his more personal stories from being a rock star and an activist. The film was shot from the Beacon Theatre shows (it's not the Sphere, but it'll do) and features Bono performing stripped-down versions of some of his most famous U2 songs like 'Beautiful Day' and 'City of Blinding Lights,' as seen in the trailer. The film is a production of RadicalMedia and Plan B Entertainment. Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick ('Summer of Soul,' 'Hamilton,' 'David Byrne's American Utopia') produce alongside Academy Award-winning Plan B Entertainment's Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner (upcoming 'F1,' 'Moonlight,' '12 Years a Slave'). Bono executive produces with Jennifer Pitcher ('Kiss The Future') and Kelly McNamara ('V-U2 an Immersive Concert Film at Sphere Las Vegas'). Check out the trailer below. Although the video is yet to be officially released, singer Sam shared a brief clip of it on his Instagram page. In a black and white shot, Owen can be seen surveying the landscape, with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders. Sam captioned his post: "I get a little bit closer", seemingly referencing the song's title. Adolescence director Philip Barantini, also worked on this video, and will be well aware of Owen's talent, following his star turn as Jamie Miller in the show. The harrowing drama, is one of Netflix's most successful British dramas and has clocked up 114.5M views on the streaming platform. Hollywood star Brad Pitt's production company - Plan B Entertainment - is said to be in talks about a potential second season of Adolescence following its huge success. According to Deadline, Plan B co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner are liaising with director Barantini. It's thought they are speaking about how they can "widen the aperture, stay true to its DNA [and] not be repetitive". The four-part limited series, co-starring Top Boy's Ashley Walters, became a surprise hit for the streaming giant when it launched last month. Netflix fans in tears over Ashey Walters and Stephen Graham's show Adolescence - as boss reveals how 'impossible' shot was done Dede Gardner said: 'Phil's style of doing the episodes in one take is not a gimmick. It's very much in conversation with the subject matter. "In early conversations with Stephen and Jack, they were talking about how it's too easy to look away. You can look away from the school, you can look away from the police station, you can look away from the counselling, you can look away from the family. "In that kind of prismatic way of viewing, you can duck the issue. So our theory was, what would happen if you couldn't look away? And will that make the subject embed in you in a different way? That was a thrilling thing.' While Kleiner said Fight Club star Brad was "blown away" by the original script, and was very much "part of the energy, drive, and impetus to get the thing off the ground". Brad also starred in Guy Ritchie's 2000 feature Snatch alongside Stephen Graham and Kleiner added: 'Brad is a massive fan of Stephen." Adolescence explores the story of the fictional Miller family, whose lives are turned upside down when their 13-year-old-son Jamie is arrested on suspicion of murder having been radicalised online. 5 Sam Fender on stage in America Credit: Getty
