Call for Traveling: Cowboys solution for CB may have roots in uprooting All-Pro

Call for Traveling: Cowboys solution for CB may have roots in uprooting All-Pro Cornerbacks don't usually like to travel. Rather than flip from side to side and follow opposing receivers around the field, they typically stick to their respective side and focus on who, and what, comes to them. In 2025 the Dallas Cowboys may not have that luxury. Two of the Cowboys' top three CBs are expected to miss time early in the year. Both veteran Trevon Diggs and rookie Shavel Revel are recovering from offseason knee surgeries, meaning the Cowboys could start the season severely undermanned at CB. If Dallas trots out DeRon Bland to man the left cornerback spot snap after snap, opponents will just avoid the All-Pro. After all, why target the NFL's single-season Pick-6 champion (interceptions returned for touchdowns) when easier targets are manning CB positions elsewhere? If the Cowboys really want to flip the script on their opponents in 2025, they may want to ask Bland to do what so many other CBs refuse to do: travel with WR1. Bland is well acquainted with playing multiple CB positions in the NFL. Not only has he taken hundreds of snaps at both the left and right CB spots in Dallas, but he's also manned the middle, taking on slot WRs as a nickel CB. In summer OTA's Bland is already showing he's up to the challenge inside. It may not be his ideal position, but it's a position he's experienced in and well-suited for. It's this versatility that could make him a thorn in opposing WR1's sides this season. If Bland travels, opponents won't be able to dictate matchups like they can against most defenses. It would allow the Cowboys to match their best against the opponent's best, and give depth covermen like Calean Carson, Israel Mukuamu and Kaiir Elam more reasonable matchups along the way. Asking Bland to move inside and out on any given snap would also require the Cowboys to find another CB capable of playing both inside and out as well. Luckily Dallas might have those players on their roster since Mukuamu has NFL experience doing just that and Carson came to NFL with inside-outside experience in college. The best way to survive a thin CB corps at the start of this season might be leaning on the versatility and strength of the last remaining All-Pro. Bland better get his passport renewed now because this looks like a great season for travel. A Union County player matched all five white balls and the Cash Ball drawn on Wednesday, May 14, to win the Cash 4 Life top prize. The player selected the cash option and will receive the lump sum award of $7 million. The $7 million prize is the NJ Lottery's second largest of 2025, behind a $32 million Pick-6 win on Monday, Jan. 20, in Ocean County. The last time a NJ player won the top prize in Cash 4 Life was Tuesday, April 18, 2023. Quick Stop Deli & Grill, 1723 Stuyvesant Ave. in Union Township, will receive a $30,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. The winning numbers were 02, 16, 30, 42 and 55. The Cash Ball was 03. In addition to the 'for Life' prizes, the Cash 4 Life game offers seven other prize levels with prizes of $2,500, $500, $100, $25, $10, $4, and $2. The Doubler add-on feature lifts the $2,500 third-tier prize to $5,000 when added to a game play for an additional $1 per play. It also doubles all of the other tier prizes. The $1,000 a day for life and $1,000 a week for life prizes are not doubled. ESPN says Cowboys biggest need is position with 8th-highest NFL cap hit, $30 million

ESPN says Cowboys biggest need is position with 8th-highest NFL cap hit, $30 million The Cowboys have a ton of financial and draft capital tied up at corner, and it still may not be enough, per ESPN. With the addition of George Pickens, the wide receiver room is finally settled for the 2025 Dallas Cowboys. There may be some risk to the trade, sending a third-round selection to Pittsburgh for the fourth-year wideout, but he's squarely in the conversation as one of the league's best WR2. So with that corps now certified, what else do the Cowboys have to worry about? Look no further than the position regularly tasked with stopping those wideouts, the cornerbacks. ESPN's Aaron Schatz took a tour around the NFL and identified each team's biggest remaining need, and pointed out the risks the Cowboys have on the defensive side of the ball. Dallas Cowboys Position of need: Cornerback depth The biggest hole was wide receiver, but that was solved with the George Pickens trade. So let's pivot to cornerback. DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs are strong starters, but there are questions about whether Diggs will be ready to start the season after surgery late last year to repair cartilage damage in his left knee. There are also health questions about the No. 3 corner, third-round rookie Shavon Revel Jr. He was thought to be a first-round talent but fell because of an ACL tear. Depth is poor if Diggs or Revel isn't ready for Week 1. Caelen Carson allowed a horrendous 98.4% coverage DVOA in limited time as a rookie, along with 10.9 yards per target. Kaiir Elam was a first-round pick but washed out in Buffalo. Safety Israel Mukuamu can line up in the slot but played only 18% of Dallas' defensive snaps last season. The Cowboys have a ton of money tied into the position already. Their 2025 cap hit for corners currently sits at $29.98 million, eight-highest amount in the league. It's a position they have spent well on, despite letting slot corner Jourdan Lewis depart in free agency where he signed a three-year, $30 million pact with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Cowboys' situation is an interesting dynamic. They've spent on the position, have two players under 30 years old with recent All-Pro designations and a rookie corner who is generally regarded as having an All-Pro ceiling, but it's their biggest area of weakness. Most NFL clubs would kill to have that level of depth at the position, but a team most think isn't going to make the playoffs has that as their worst position group. Diggs is set to cost the club $12.6 million against the cap this year. He has a $9 million base salary and $1 million in bonuses, as well as the signing bonus allocation for the $97 million extension he inked in 2023. Diggs has played in just 13 games since making that deal, and as mentioned above could miss the start of the 2025 season as well. Bland is in need of a new deal after setting the NFL record for Pick-6's in 2023 with five. He enters the final campaign of his 2022 rookie deal this season costing $5.4 million against the cap. His pay skyrocketed thanks to the NFL's performance increases for Day 3 picks. The former fifth-round pick was originally scheduled to make just around $1 million in salary based on the rookie wage scale. Elam comes over from Buffalo with $2.5 million on his ledger, and Revel's rookie deal checks in around $1.2 million in cost. The team carries another seven cornerbacks on their 90-man offseason roster.
