Tyler, the Creator modernizes 2 shoes from the Converse archives
Today, Tyler, the Creator drops two new styles in his ongoing collaboration with Converse: a yacht shoe and a jogger, both of which are 1970s silhouettes pulled from the brand's archives. Tyler knows you're probably going to wear these sneakers with jeans and a T-shirt. But that's the wrong move, he insists. When I speak with him, he's wearing the jogger with a button up, a cropped rain jacket, and trousers. He'd prefer if you wore these kicks with a more polished look. 'Nah, bruh,' he says. 'Wear them with the ill slacks and the ill sweater.' As his stage name implies, Tyler is involved in too many different creative ventures to count. He's a rapper and producer, who also writes for an adult cartoon show called The Jellies, and creator of a music festival called Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. But like his friend and mentor, Pharrell Williams, he's become increasingly well-known for his personal aesthetic and his contributions to the world of fashion. In 2011, he launched his streetwear label, Golf Wang, and in 2017, he began collaborating with Converse, a subsidiary of Nike, which generated $2.1 billion in 2024. (This was a 14% decline from 2023.) Over the years, his partnership with Converse has evolved into a separate, stand-alone brand called Le Fleur, a nod to his 2017 Grammy-nominated album, Flower Boy. The line is known for its pastel color palette; bold daisy icon, which encapsulates the Converse star; and the way in which it plays with traditional gender norms. Tyler isn't interested in a total redesign of the Converse silhouettes. For this collection, he worked with Lindsay Almeida, Converse's director of entertainment and sports marketing, to explore the archives. He was drawn to the Naut-1, a yacht shoe first released in 1971, and the Coach Jogger, an Olympic running shoe from 1976. He liked these models because they seemed fresh and relevant. 'I honestly hate the idea of nostalgia,' he says. 'I didn't want to reinvent the wheel because I think these shoes were perfect. I just wanted to do them in new colors.' And indeed, Tyler designs the shoes in interesting colors. The joggers, which cost $100, come in a teal and yellow, a dark and light green, and a brown and mustard. The yacht shoes, which cost $90, come in a cream with delicate embroidered flowers, a dark brown, and a teal. While some critics on social media argue that he hasn't done much to bring his own point of view to these designs, Tyler believes that small changes can be impactful. It echoes fashion designer Virgil Abloh, who argued that you only need to change an idea by 3% to create something new. And ultimately, Tyler believes that his strength lies in curating pieces and bringing them together in interesting ways. 'It's in the styling, the way they're worn, the color palettes,' he says. 'I really love wearing a sporty shoe with an outfit that makes folks glitch and say, I didn't know you could wear them like that.' Tyler still designs for Golf Wang, which is grounded in streetwear, with hoodies and jeans. But he says that Le Fleur's aesthetic is more reflective of his personal style these days. 'I didn't want to have to change Golf Wang because it would alienate folks,' he says. 'But Le Fleur is a mirror to where I'm at in life, with unique styles and colorways.' Converse has been struggling over the past decade; last year, its revenues declined 14% from the year before and in May, it laid off 2% of its workforce. A decade ago, it relaunched it's most famous shoe, the Chuck Taylor, with new technology, but consumers did not take to the new version and sales dropped. Part of the company's strategy to grow sales was to bring on new collaborators; Tyler was among them. Since the first release, in 2017, products from the collaboration have been popular and allow Converse to stay in the cultural conversation (not to mention connect with Tyler's nearly 17 million Instagram followers). Still, it's a hard moment for Converse and its parent company, Nike. In an earnings call last December, Nike CFO Matt Friend said that consumers were pulling back on spending. He argued that newness is what would cause consumers to shop. Converse is counting on this new collab to get sneakerheads to pay attention.

Piece By Piece to Saltburn: the seven best films to watch on TV this week
We've had Robbie Williams played by a CGI chimp so why not Pharrell Williams as a collection of small plastic bricks? This weird but joyous documentary from Morgan Neville uses Lego to encapsulate the life of the wildly successful Neptunes producer and musician. Williams having synaesthesia – he experiences sound as colour – means the film can go off on visual flights of fancy; the beats he creates becoming rainbow fireworks or vibrant waves. All this trippy imagery covers up the fact that his rise to stardom has been fairly frictionless, but contributions from Lego versions of Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg et al attest to his offbeat worldview and hyperactive creativity. Saturday, 8.25am, 4.20pm, Sky Cinema Premiere Why would a mother leave her 15-month-old daughter on a beach to drown? That's the central question in French film-maker Alice Diop's murky, moving courtroom drama, as a young Senegalese woman, Laurence (Guslagie Malanda), is put on trial. Lecturer Rama (Kayije Kagame) attends in the hope of writing a book about it, but uneasy resonances with her own life – immigrant family, pregnancy, mixed-race relationship – throw her off-track. Even the evasive, inconsistent Laurence appears unsure as to why she committed such a horrific act. Saturday, 9pm, BBC Four An unusual romantic lead at the best of times, Humphrey Bogart really pushed the boat out in terms of audience sympathy in this 1950 Nicholas Ray film. His Hollywood screenwriter Dixon Steele is sardonic and bitter, with a history of getting into fights. And when he is suspected of the murder of a hat-check girl, his blithe indifference raises the hackles of the cops. That doesn't stop new neighbour Laurel (a superb Gloria Grahame) falling for him, but as she gets to know Dixon better her suspicions rise. An edgy mystery, with Bogart an opaque, menacing presence. Sunday, 2pm, Talking Pictures TV Celebrated for making stars of John Wayne and its chief location, Monument Valley, John Ford's 1939 film also showed that the western could allow for moral complexity in between shootouts. With renegade Apache Geronimo on the warpath, an assortment of ill-matched passengers find themselves on a dangerous journey. These include Wayne's escaped convict, a sex worker, a drunken doctor, a cavalry officer's wife and a thieving bank manager. Naturally, the rough and ready types prove more reliable than their social betters when push comes to shove. Sunday, 12.45pm, 5Action Just in case the upcoming Netflix sequel doesn't quite live up to expectations, here's Adam Sandler's 1996 slapstick comedy to prove where most of its best jokes originated. Sandler's Happy is a dreadful ice-hockey player with a hair-trigger temper but he possesses a stupendously hard shot, which when adapted to the game of golf proves an unlikely boon. The disconnect between the etiquettes of the two sports is fertile ground for laughs, as is Sandler's man-child shtick. Sunday, 9pm, Comedy Central Writer-director Emerald Fennell has her gateau and eats it in this dark comedy thriller, satirising the British aristocracy while revelling in their massive houses and insouciant confidence. Barry Keoghan is the cuckoo in the gilded nest, Oxford undergrad Oliver, who is befriended by the genial, upper-class Felix (Jacob Elordi) and taken home to the country pile to meet his folks, Lady Elspeth (Rosamund Pike) and Sir James (Richard E Grant). The subsequent intrigue and flagrant rug-pulling as Oliver struggles to fit in make for a vivacious, vicious experience. Sunday, 10.30pm, BBC One This limber 2015 film is the second of four fruitful collaborations (to date) between director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B Jordan – and also set in train a new run of boxing dramas set in RockyWorld. Jordan plays Adonis Johnson, the unknown son of Rocky Balboa's opponent turned friend Apollo Creed. Adonis has the fight gene too, so turns up in Philadelphia to get Rocky (a convincingly weary Sylvester Stallone) to train him. There's enough ring work for the action fan, but it's also an exploration of family ties and the meaning of legacy. Tuesday, 9pm, ITV4

The Birthplace of East Coast Surfing Is Getting the First 'Wavegarden' in the U.S.—and It's Just 2 Blocks From the Ocean
Surf culture runs deep in Virginia Beach, long considered the birthplace of East Coast surfing. Now, it's leveling up with Atlantic Park Surf, the first surf lagoon in the United States powered by Wavegarden wave-generation technology. Set to open by July, this high-tech lagoon will pump out consistent, rideable waves year-round—just two blocks from the ocean. This surf park anchors Atlantic Park, a 10.35-acre entertainment district developed in collaboration with hometown icon Pharrell Williams. The project sits on hallowed ground—the former site of the original Dome, a legendary music venue that once hosted Jimi Hendrix and Ray Charles before its demolition in 1994. Opening in phases, the development will include shops, restaurants, residences, and an open-air concert venue. But it's the surf lagoon that's generating the most buzz. 'We have a long-standing surf culture, but this adds something special to our tourism portfolio,' Amanda Jarratt, deputy city manager for the City of Virginia Beach, told Travel + Leisure . 'It's something different and unique that lets surfers explore and excel at their sport.' Designed for all skill levels, the lagoon offers everything from gentle rollers for beginners to fast, barreling breaks for advanced wave riders. Surf sessions last 55 minutes, start at $100, and feature seven wave settings. On-site coaching will be available, including from Jason Borte, a local pro, who is director of coaching at Atlantic Park Surf and a 2016 East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame inductee. 'The surf culture [in Virginia Beach] is massive,' Borte, who also co-owns WRV Surf Camp, said. 'We've produced a lot of great surfers. For the next generation of kids looking to make a name in surfing, Atlantic Park Surf will provide them with a great opportunity,' he added, noting the value of high-quality waves on demand. A rendering of Atlantic Park and the wavegarden. Surfing in Virginia Beach dates back to 1912, when local teen James M. Jordan Jr. paddled out on a redwood surfboard brought back from Hawaii by his uncle, marking the start of East Coast surfing. Today, the city hosts the Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships—the world's longest-running surf contest—along with events like the Steel Pier Classic and Neptune's Surfing Classic. Mainstays like 17th Street Surf Shop and the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum keep the past alive, while surf schools like VB Surf Sessions inspire the next wave of riders.
