Why top beauty executive Sharyn Wong left her career after great success in building brands
Above Sharyn Wong with celebrity Tessa Prieto (Photo: Courtesy of Sharyn Wong) Working across Asia and New York gave her a unique appreciation for cultural nuances and the ability to lead with empathy. 'The diverse cultural insights and market dynamics I encountered have taught me the importance of adaptability, strategic thinking and empathy,' she says. The peak of these experiences led to her appointment as country general manager of ELC in the Philippines in 2021—a role she describes as 'a culmination of years of dedication, continuous learning and seizing opportunities'. Along the way, she leaned on mentors and built a strong foundation of leadership that put business and people at the centre. When it came to introducing global luxury brands to the Filipino market, Wong embraced the same consumer-first philosophy while staying grounded in the local culture. 'I have always prioritised consumer listening, collaborations with local influencers and tailored marketing campaigns that highlight the brands' unique attributes while aligning with Filipino values and aspirations.' For instance, Jo Malone London leaned into the country's strong gifting culture. 'We dialled up gifting and personalisation in the Philippines... This has served us very well.' But equally meaningful are the moments of social impact: 'I have always been driven to make an impact, whether through marketing campaigns—like the Clinique Happy campaign back in the late Nineties. We also pioneered The Estée Lauder Companies' first Pink Charity Ball here in Manila in 2022… seeing the positive impact of our efforts on consumers and the market has been incredibly rewarding.' 'My personal commitment and passion to this cause started when my best friend was diagnosed in 2000,' Wong shares. Her dedication is especially significant given the sobering statistics in the Philippines, which ranks third in breast cancer mortality rate in Asia or 27 deaths per 100,000 people. 'In last year's Pink Charity Ball, raising PhP 9.65 million for the local community was a testament to our collective commitment… I feel incredibly moved that these funds support underserved women who may not have been able to access this type of screening,' she says. 'I prioritise my health, make time for activities that rejuvenate me and ensure I have a support network to navigate life's pressures,' she says. That balance extended into her family life with her husband and two children as well. 'I chose to retire now to focus on new personal and professional endeavours that I've been passionate about but couldn't fully pursue due to my career commitments,' she explains. At the top of her list are wellness, philanthropy, mentoring and family. 'This next chapter offers a unique opportunity to reflect on my journey, give back to the community and explore new interests that bring me joy and fulfilment.' Some of those interests include the simple joys she's had to set aside: 'I am looking forward to dedicating more time to travel, exploring different cultures and engaging in creative pursuits such as baking and floristry,' she says. She's also eager to deepen her involvement with causes that matter to her, continuing the impact work she began in beauty. Read more: How make-up can be used for activism, cultural reclamation and empowerment To young women hoping to follow in her footsteps, Wong offers heartfelt guidance: 'Stay authentic and believe in your vision. Embrace continuous learning and seek mentorship from those who inspire you. Building a strong network and fostering genuine relationships is crucial. Most importantly, never underestimate the power of perseverance and resilience—for the challenges you face today will shape you into the leader you aspire to become.' Never underestimate the power of perseverance and resilience—for the challenges you face today will shape you into the leader you aspire to become - Sharyn Wong - As she looks back, Wong hopes to leave behind more than just successful brand campaigns. 'I hope to leave a legacy of empowerment, inclusivity and positive impact within the beauty industry and community,' she says. 'I hope people see me as a leader who not only drove business success but also made a tangible difference in people's lives.' And while she may be stepping away from the spotlight, the Philippines holds a permanent place in her heart. 'I will miss the warmth and hospitality of its people,' she says. 'The vibrant culture, rich traditions and scenic landscapes have left an indelible mark on my heart… I will definitely be coming back for frequent visits.'

Equinix, Inc. has expanded its footprint in Southeast Asia with the completion of the acquisition of three data centers in Manila, the Philippines, from Total Information Management, a leading technology solutions provider. In 2024, the Philippines' digital economy reached US$45 billion (PhP 2.5 trillion), accounting for 8.5% of the country's Gross Domestic Product. This encompasses a wide range of digital transactions, including digital-enabling infrastructure, e-commerce and digital media/content. The growing digital population, advancements in cloud development and government initiatives—such as the National Broadband Plan and the Digital Philippines Campaign—are also accelerating the nation's demand for high-performance digital infrastructure and advanced technology like AI. With strategic partnerships with AI industry leaders like NVIDIA and HPE, Equinix's entry into the Philippines will empower local organizations to connect with more than 10,000 companies within Equinix's extensive global ecosystems, addressing growing demands for digital infrastructure and fostering AI innovation within the nation. ASEAN has emerged as a premier destination for global businesses, drawing unprecedented foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows of US$230 billion in 2023, despite a 10% decline in global FDI. [1] With a robust data center network spanning Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, Equinix's facilities in the Philippines will provide global customers and partners the opportunity to build their digital infrastructure in this vibrant market and throughout the wider region.
