Police issue warning after clever thieves target senior in Barrie parking lot
Barrie police hope to identify two suspects accused of a distraction theft that resulted in the loss of a sentimental item from a senior shopping in the city's south east end. Police say the senior was in the parking lot of a big box store on Mapleview Drive East early Thursday afternoon when he noticed a vehicle with a man and a woman slowly roll by as he unloaded his purchases. The suspicious vehicle circled back to the senior and the woman got out and approached him as he made his way back to his car after returning his shopping cart. According to police, the woman 'very quickly placed a gold chain around his neck and pushed two gold rings onto his fingers." After the senior explained he didn't want the items, police say the woman removed them, but instead of taking back what was later determined to be a fake chain, she stole his real gold chain with a dolphin pendant on it. "The theft of the gold chain is estimated at $4,500, but more disturbing than the theft is the sentimental value that the chain and the dolphin pendent represented to the victim," stated Barrie police Corporate Communications Coordinator Peter Leon in a Friday release. Police obtained surveillance video of the incident and are investigating. They say this type of distraction theft often targets seniors in parking lots or when they are alone. 'The Barrie Police Service strongly encourages members of our community to be aware of strangers who quickly approach you in the manner identified above,' Leon added. 'These people are up to no good and will act very quickly to steal what is yours by catching you off guard. Police encourage the public, that if ever approached in this way, to call out and yell for help. Parking lots are busy places, and it is hoped that someone will come to assist you or call the police for you." No description of the suspects was provided.

Police stop dozens of drivers making illegal turn onto Hwy 400 ramp in Barrie
New signage is posted at Essa Road and Fairview Road in Barrie indicating a no left turn onto northbound Highway 400 on Fri., June 6, 2025. Police officers stopped dozens of drivers making an illegal turn onto a Highway 400 ramp in Barrie's south end Friday during an educational blitz aimed at alerting motorists about the new signage and rules. 'For just over a week, the new ramp to northbound Highway 400, just as you pass under the Essa Road overpass has been open. The old access lane at the Fairview Road intersection is now a through lane,' Barrie police posted on social media Friday. Since the Essa Road/Highway 400 interchange project began years ago, the area has been full of detours, lane closures and delays, but now, with the majority of the work completed, motorists are urged to obey the new signage. Barrie police communication correspondent Peter Leon says officers stopped 30 motorists during a short time Friday, adding drivers are responsible to adhere to the signage. 'The opening of the new on-ramp and the through lane-related change has been well advertised,' he noted in an email to CTV News. 'Failing to do so will only create traffic chaos or potentially, a very serious motor vehicle at a very busy intersection that serves as a exit from Highway 400. Continuing to disobey the signage will not only upset law abiding drivers but will congest the intersecting roadways in the immediate area.' The new Highway 400 northbound on-ramp from eastbound Essa Road opened June 5. New Fairview Road traffic signals are in operation, with the road back to the existing configuration, with all eastbound Essa lanes once again through lanes only. Left turns toward northbound Highway 400 are no longer permitted. 'Your safety remains our priority, please obey the signs at this location,' police noted. The southbound Highway 400 on-ramp from westbound Essa Road reopened last month. The project included widening Essa Road from four lanes to six lanes from Bryne Drive to east of Fairview Road to help ease traffic congestion.
