Mariska Hargitay Comes to Terms With a Lifetime of Family Secrets

Mariska Hargitay was at home, and she was sprinting up the stairs, bounding between the corners of her very full life. I had to hustle to keep pace. She checked in with her oldest son — tall, polite, home from his first year at Princeton — and supervised the setup of an engagement party she was hosting for her goddaughter. Gardeners buzzed about the terraces of her Manhattan penthouse. She apologized, superfluously, for the noise. Her latest obsession, a family heirloom grand piano that had recently entered her apartment via crane, dominated the living room, with a custom 'M' bench, courtesy of her husband, the actor Peter Hermann ('Younger'). 'That's my next thing — I'm going to learn to play soon,' Hargitay vowed. Another dash and we were on the floor below, a warren of cozy offices, painted in jewel tones, with overstuffed couches and muscular art by Annie Leibovitz. Tucked on a bookshelf were some of Hargitay's awards. She has earned Emmys for playing Olivia Benson, the beloved 'Law & Order: SVU' hardass, and for producing the 2017 documentary 'I Am Evidence,' about the backlog of rape kits. This is where Hargitay had conceived, edited and even shot some of her newest and perhaps most life-altering project, the documentary 'My Mom Jayne.' It's at once an unflinching portrait of her mother, the 1950s star and pinup Jayne Mansfield, who died when Mariska was 3; a homage to her father, the bodybuilder and actor Mickey Hargitay; and an investigation into her own clouded and secretive origins. Directing the film, which will air June 27 on HBO, and proclaiming her story has unlocked something profound for Hargitay, 61. 'I am so clear now about the truth,' she said. 'This big haze came off — a veil of fear. And now I just feel so much at peace. It's like a miracle to me to feel this way. I never thought I could.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Mariska Hargitay's Son is a Dead Ringer For His Mom on the Red Carpet

Mariska Hargitay's Son is a Dead Ringer For His Mom on the Red Carpet originally appeared on Parade. August Hermann looks just like his famous parents! The 18-year-old New Yorker is the son of Law and Order: SVU legend Mariska Hargitay and Younger star Peter Hermann. August stepped out with his mom on Sunday to attend the premiere of Re-Creation at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival at SVA Theater in New York City. Pictured with his arm around his mom, Hermann towered over Hargitay, 61. Dressed in a black sweater and cream-colored pinstriped pants, the teen looked quite dashing alongside his famous mum, who wore a black blouse, navy trousers, and silver pointy-toed shoes. 🎬 🎬 When it comes to parenting advice, Hargitay's SVU costars know she's the one to go to with questions. Peter Scanavino, who plays ADA Dominick Carisi on the long-running series, told TODAY that Hargitay gave him some advice he holds close. 'She gave a very good parenting piece of advice to me and my wife, which was, don't threaten a punishment to your children that you're not willing to carry out,' he shared. 'If you say, 'One more time, we're going to go home,' don't say that unless you're really prepared to do it. And I think that's been a very good lesson and rule to have as a parent.'Mariska Hargitay's Son is a Dead Ringer For His Mom on the Red Carpet first appeared on Parade on Jun 9, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 9, 2025, where it first appeared.

Mariska Hargitay brings all three of her rarely-seen kids to premiere of Jayne Mansfield doc

Mariska Hargitay looked incredible as she channeled old Hollywood glamour at the Friday night Tribeca Festival premiere of her new documentary My Mom Jayne. She was joined by her longtime husband, 57-year-old actor Peter Hermann, and their three children: August, 18, Andrew, 12, and Amaya, 14. The 61-year-old Law & Order mainstay is the daughter of the late pinup star Jayne Mansfield and Hungarian-American actor and bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay. In her new movie, she dropped a bombshell revelation — that her biological father is former Las Vegas entertainer Nelson Sardelli and not Hargitay, the man who raised her. For the special occasion, the actress dazzled in a glitzy gown boasting a champagne-colored beaded floral top with a matching shawl, long black skirt, and white opera gloves. Their daughter matched with him in a crew neck ivory skirt suit with a peplum hemline and oversize bow accoutrement. She slipped her feet into a pair of jewel-tone pink mules with an open-toe design. Ahead of the star-studded event, Mariska took to Instagram to interact with her 3.4 million followers. Sharing a precious photo of her blonde bombshell mother holding her as a baby, she wrote, 'Thank you for the incredible outpouring of love for #MyMomJayne. 'It means the world to me. Because of the beautiful, overwhelming response, WE'VE JUST RELEASED MORE TICKETS for our @tribeca premiere at @carnegiehall!' She concluded the note, 'I can't wait to share this story with you. See you THIS Friday, June 13th. #LinkInBio.' Mariska was supported by Hollywood A-listers including many of her Law & Order co-stars like Ice-T. The rapper-turned-actor, 67, was joined on the red carpet by wife of 23 years Coco Austin, 46, and their nine-year-old daughter Chanel. The family-of-three coordinated in red, white, and black outfits and big smiles. Ice-T, real name Tracy Marrow, wore black trousers, a short-sleeved white collared shirt, and white Jordan sneakers. His daughter looked adorable in a floral patterned white dress and red cardigan. And his model wife stepped out in a curve-hugging black dress covered in pink and peach florals. Another co-star and friend, Christopher Meloni, 64, stepped out for the event. Meloni wore faded blue jeans with a dark gray button-up shirt and brown lace-up dress boots. He looked great with a perfectly groomed grizzled goatee. Brooke Shields, who, like Mariska, is also a documentary filmmaker, arrived in a green sequin pantsuit. The 60-year-old supermodel looked phenomenal as she teased her cleavage under her suit jacket and wore matching emerald stone earrings. Her long and lustrous copper-toned locks were arranged in fluffy spiral curls that tumbled over her chest. Claire Danes, 46, made the premiere a date night, showing up with husband Hugh Dancy, 49. The mother-of-three looked lovely in a bright orange dress and shrunken, black leather moto jacket. Jamie Lee Curtis, 66, kept it classic in a little black dress with a white accent at the neckline. The Hollywood vet rounded out the look with pointy-toe black heels and complemented the look with standout eyeglasses. Her signature short gray hair was styled in a pixie with wispy pieces at the top. Cher also stepped out for the screening, and the 79-year-old singer looked younger than her years. She was dressed in wide-leg black trousers with a single white stripe down the legs. The fashion-forward star added a fitted black leather jacket with decorative graphic print sleeves.

Law & Order: SVU's favorite crime-solving duo reunited over the weekend, and one flirty moment between them has the internet buzzing! On Friday, tons of celebrities flocked to Carnegie Hall to celebrate the Tribeca Film Festival Premiere of My Mom Jayne: A Film By Mariska Hargitay. Mariska was just 3 years old when her mom, Hollywood actor and former Playboy Playmate Jayne Mansfield, died in a car accident in 1967. Mariska created this documentary as a way to discover more about the mother she barely knew. 'This movie is a labor of love and longing," Mariska told Variety. "It's a search for the mother I never knew, an integration of a part of myself I'd never owned, and a reclaiming of my mother's story and my own truth. I've always believed there is strength in vulnerability, and the process of making this film has confirmed that belief like never before.' The red carpet was packed with her friends and peers to support her feature film debut, including her family — her husband of over two decades, Peter Hermann (who she met on the SVU set), and their three children, August Miklos Friedrich Hermann, Andrew Nicolas Hermann, and Amaya Josephine Hermann... ...Cher... ...Jamie Lee Curtis... ...Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy, and tons more.
