Apple TV+ Signs First-Look Film Deal with North Road's Chernin Entertainment

Apple TV+ has announced a multi-year, first-look feature film deal with North Road Company's Chernin Entertainment, the company behind 'Ford v Ferrari,' 'Planet of the Apes,' 'Hidden Figures,' and 'The Greatest Showman.' Chernin is also producing the Jason Momoa epic miniseries 'Chief of War,' set for release on August 1. 'We've had a great experience working with Apple on the series side, where they've been smart, daring, and always supportive — we're excited to build on that success by making movies together,' North Road Company Chairman Peter Chernin said in a statement. Apple was the first streaming service to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, as well, with 2021's 'CODA.' Chernin Entertainment was founded in 2009, while North Road Company was established three years ago and produces a variety of content across film, television, and streaming platforms. Other North Road labels include North Road Television, Kinetic Content, and Words + Pictures. This year, Chernin released 'Back in Action' with Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz on Netflix, as well as 'Fear Street: Prom Queen.' Upcoming film releases include 'Apex' with Charlize Theron, 'Altar' with Kyle MacLachlan, and the found-footage horror flick 'The Backrooms.' Additionally, the series 'Age of Innocence,' 'Man on Fire,' and 'The Body' are all in production under North Road's television banner. Kinetic Content, meanwhile, is responsible for the massive Netflix unscripted hit 'Love is Blind.' Words + Pictures has released major documentaries such as last year's acclaimed 'Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.' Chernin has also entered the realm of AI last year with his investment in Promise, which boasts top Generative AI and storytelling talent. 'There is something undeniably exciting about Generative AI, and we are bullish on George and Promise's ability to empower storytellers,' Chernin said in November 2024 statement. 'This team understands that prioritizing artists and creatives is the only approach as we begin to apply Generative AI into the creative process, and Promise has the most inventive and user-friendly model we have seen.' Apple seals movie deal with media mogul Peter Chernin

[LOS ANGELES] Apple has signed a deal to release new movies from North Road, the entertainment studio led by media mogul Peter Chernin, indicating the technology giant's growing ambitions in Hollywood. The agreement will give Apple first crack at new projects being developed by Chernin, whose company has been aligned with Netflix for the last five years. North Road's Chernin Entertainment can still produce films it's already developing for other studios and has two movies that will soon come out on Netflix: Apex, an action thriller starring Charlize Theron, and 11817, a horror project starring Wagner Moura and Greta Lee. 'We have had a great experience working with Apple on the series side, where they've been smart, daring, and always supportive – we're excited to build on that success by making movies together,' said Chernin, who has already produced TV shows See and Truth Be Told for Apple. Their next collaboration, the TV series Chief of War starring Jason Momoa, debuts in August. Apple, a relative newcomer in Hollywood, has been building out its film business to bolster its Apple TV+ streaming service. While the tech giant has released a handful of hit original TV shows, including Ted Lasso and Severance, it has yet to replicate that success on the feature film side. It will release one of its most ambitious films yet, F1 starring Brad Pitt, on Jun 27. Chernin is one of the most respected figures in the media world as an investor and producer. He spent years as an executive working with Rupert Murdoch at News and Fox before setting up his own company. His investment firm, the Chernin Group, has taken stakes in companies such as Barstool Sports and the anime streaming service Crunchyroll, while his entertainment company produces films and TV shows. Chernin folded all his entertainment assets, including the production outfit behind the hit reality TV shows Love is Blind and The Ultimatum, into North Road. The company is producing several dozen projects this year – a mix of documentaries, feature films, reality shows and scripted series. Chernin started off producing many films and TV shows for Fox, including Ford v Ferrari, recent instalments of the Planet of the Apes franchise and the sitcom New Girl. In 2020, Chernin signed a deal to make movies for Netflix, producing the Fear Street franchise as well as Back in Action, a comedy starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz. Yet as that agreement came to a close, Chernin shopped for a new home. Netflix has scaled back the number of movies it plans to make, though it still churns out more than almost anyone in Hollywood, while Apple is ramping up. The iPhone maker has released a few features this year, including an action movie called The Gorge and the heist film Fountain of Youth. Those titles were released directly onto the streaming service Apple TV+, while the Formula 1 movie will be released in movie theatres worldwide before appearing online. BLOOMBERG

FILE PHOTO: A Google logo is seen at a company research facility in Mountain View, California, U.S., May 13, 2025. REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo (Reuters) -Generative AI studio Promise, backed by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, said on Tuesday that it had partnered with Alphabet's Google to use its AI technologies. The startup has also expanded its investor base, with new backing from Google's AI Futures Fund, Crossbeam Venture Partners, and others, the company said in a blog. Former News Corp President Peter Chernin's firm, North Road Company, a co-lead investor, has invested additional capital in this round. Promise will integrate Google's AI technologies into its production pipeline and workflow software, MUSE, while also collaborating with researchers from DeepMind. Hollywood studios have been exploring ways to incorporate GenAI tools to reduce costs and speed up the content creation process. Founded by Fullscreen CEO George Strompolos, former YouTube executive Jamie Byrne and AI artist Dave Clark, Promise aims to capitalize on the GenAI boom and is working with Hollywood stakeholders to develop a multi-year lineup of content. Production of its first feature-length film is slated to begin this year. (Reporting by Juby Babu in Mexico City; Editing by Mohammed Safi Shamsi)
