Five militants with suspected India links killed in Pakistan's northwest — army
ISLAMABAD: Pakistani security forces have killed five suspected militants in two separate intelligence-based operations in the country's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the military said on Monday, alleging the insurgents had links to India. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the army's media wing, said four militants were killed in a raid in Peshawar district late Sunday, while another was shot dead during a separate operation in North Waziristan. The army described the militants as being 'Indian proxies.' The military said troops 'skillfully surrounded and effectively engaged the Indian-sponsored Khwarij location,' and after an 'intense fire exchange, four Indian-sponsored Khwarij, including Kharji Haris and Kharji Baseer, were sent to hell.' A search operation in North Waziristan led to the killing of another suspected militant, the statement added. Troops recovered weapons, ammunition and explosives at both sites. Pakistan has long accused its neighbor India of backing separatist and other militants to destabilize its territory, a charge New Delhi strongly denies. Militant violence has surged in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province since 2021, when a fragile ceasefire with the Pakistani Taliban collapsed. Attacks by separatists have also spiked in southwestern Balochistan. Islamabad claims that militants receive sanctuary and funding from foreign states like India, Afghanistan and Iran. All three deny the accusations. There was no immediate response from India's foreign ministry to the latest allegations.

Magnitude 4.7 earthquake hits Pakistan's Peshawar
Residents of Peshawar were jolted by a mild earthquake on Wednesday, with tremors measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale, Geo News reported, citing the Seismological Centre. According to Geo News, the epicentre of the earthquake was located in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush mountain range, at a depth of 211 kilometres. No immediate damage or casualties were reported following the tremors. This latest quake comes nearly a month after a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Mardan, Swat, Nowshera, Swabi, and North Waziristan. That quake also had its epicentre in the Hindu Kush region at a depth of 230 kilometres, with coordinates recorded at latitude 36.63 N and longitude 71.13 E, according to the local media outlet. Earlier in April, two more earthquakes had hit various regions across Pakistan. Pakistan is prone to seismic activity as it lies on the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Indian plate's northward push into the Eurasian plate causes frequent tremors in the region. Meanwhile, Geo News highlighted that the port city of Karachi has experienced nearly 30 mild quakes in recent days. Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider explained that the Landhi Fault Line had become active after decades and is currently undergoing a normalisation phase.

Over 50 killed, dozens injured in accidents and shootings during Eid in northwest Pakistan
PESHAWAR: At least 55 people were killed and 50 others injured in various incidents across Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province during the three days of Eid Al-Adha, rescue officials said on Monday. The fatalities were reported in traffic accidents, drowning incidents, fires and gun violence across multiple districts, including the provincial capital, Peshawar. The injured were taken to local hospitals for medical treatment, according to a statement released by Rescue 1122. 'The total number of deaths across the province during the Eid holidays has reached 55,' Shah Fahad, Director General of Rescue 1122 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said. 'Fifty others were injured in shooting incidents and provided emergency medical aid.' According to the data, Rescue 1122 responded to about 2,000 emergencies and provided medical assistance to 1,897 individuals across the province during Eid. These included 1,400 medical emergencies, 349 traffic accidents, 112 fire incidents, six drowning cases and 50 crime-related incidents. In Peshawar alone, the agency handled 418 emergency calls, including 43 road accidents, 338 medical cases, 20 fire incidents and eight gun-related injuries. A total of 431 patients were transported to hospitals in the city. District-wise, the highest number of fatalities was reported in Mardan (14) and Peshawar (13). Fire incidents on festive occasions in the province are often caused by barbecues or fireworks, while traffic accidents typically stem from congestion, reckless driving by youth and occasional road rage. Drowning incidents occur when people visit rivers or lakes for boating without adequate safety measures, and gun-related injuries often result from either criminal activity or celebratory gunfire.
