PCSH Successfully Performs 180 Knee Surgeries With Robotic-assisted Technology

IPOH, June 23 (Bernama) -- Perak Community Specialist Hospital (PCSH) has performed 180 successful surgeries using the robotic-assisted Total Knee Replacement (TKR) method since the technology's introduction at the hospital in June 2023. PCSH resident orthopaedic surgeon Dr Yeoh Kian Hua said the robotic technology, which utilises the CORI surgical system, assists orthopaedic surgeons by generating 3D simulations for pre-surgical planning and supports more accurate alignment during surgery. CORI is a robotic surgical system designed to assist surgeons in performing minimally invasive orthopaedic procedures, particularly for knee and hip surgeries. 'Traditional surgery relies heavily on the surgeon's manual precision, whereas this system generates a 3D model of the patient's knee before surgery. This helps the surgeon identify the correct alignment, ensuring the procedure is conducted with greater accuracy and effectiveness. 'The method also reduces the risk of complications and bleeding and expedites the recovery process,' he told Bernama at the Orthopaedic Symposium: Latest Developments and Best Practices in Orthopaedics, held yesterday. Dr Yeoh said the surgery takes about one to two hours, and patients typically require between two and six weeks to fully recover. 'After the surgery, patients will need to undergo physiotherapy, and the recommended rehabilitation period is up to three months to achieve optimal results,' he said. He said this method, which is suitable for individuals across all age groups, is recommended particularly for patients with stage four knee osteoarthritis. 'Knee osteoarthritis is a condition in which the cartilage in the knee joint gradually deteriorates. When the cartilage is damaged, the bones within the joint can rub against each other, leading to pain, swelling, stiffness, and restricted knee movement.
