'People say I'm rich for winning Postcode Lottery but prize leaves them floored'

A mum-of-two was shocked after learning her husband entered their family in the People's Postcode lottery without her knowing – and she got a prize she never expected A woman revealed she'd been lucky with the People's Postcode Lottery – and people are seriously surprised by her winnings. Laura, who is passionate about side hustles, often shares her money saving hacks online. And recently, she opened up about what it was like winning a prize in the draw. She joked: "Guess what I've just won, the Postcode Lottery. Now I know what you're thinking - Laura, you must be minted, 'how much did you win?', well I'm about to show you. Jeff Bezos ain't got nothing on me because I've won the Postcode Lottery." ‌ The mum-of-two admitted it wasn't quite what she expected, but she seems to be happy all the same. Instead of getting a large amount of cash, she received some items in the post. ‌ Laura confessed her husband entered without her knowledge, then picked out some prizes after winning. She pulled these winnings out of the cardboard box with glee. She got four bars of Tony's Chocolonely, L'Occitane skin care, a Pyrex glass storage container, as well as some oven mitts with hens on them. How wonderfully random! Laura added: "Best believe when the parcel came I range my husband and said, 'did we win?, are we rich'. And he told me that we won the option to pick four different items from the website and this is what he chose. "I have no idea what any of the other options might have been so let's pray he picked some good ones... Maybe next time, we'll become rich." People rushed to comment on the video, also not realising that you can get gifts as prizes. One individual said: "I never knew they did prizes like this, I thought it was just money amounts." ‌ Another commented: "I thought it was all money prizes. I'm here for the Pyrex and the Tony's." People's Postcode Lottery clarified how non-cash prizes work, and said: "Throughout the year you can check using the Prize Draw Calendar for a full list of any non-cash prizes available each month. "If you're lucky enough to win one of these prizes, you can enjoy them or gift them to family and friends. Prize Vouchers for our Lotteryshop." Players will receive a voucher code they can redeem in the Lotteryshop, where there are typically over 30 different prizes to chose from. You may also win an e-Gift card, and you can spend it at a range of pre-selected national retailers. Plus, you could win a letterbox voucher which is redeemable against a range of preselected prizes.

Mozambique welcomes 10 new black rhinos to Zinave National Park

An agreement was reached on the rhinos sourced from the Ithala Game Reserve and Ezemvelo's Black Rhino Expansion Project. The rhinos were first translocated to Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park where they were prepared for the 48-hour trip to Zinave National Park. 'South Africa's successes in rhino conservation and the implementation of anti-poaching and anti-trafficking efforts have stabilised its rhino populations, thereby placing the country as a source of rhino for range states in Africa who wish to grow populations of rhinos, as is the case with this translocation,' said George. George added that the export and import of black rhinos is done in compliance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora's legislation of both countries. The director-general of ANAC, Pejul Calenga, expressed his gratitude and added that this was the first translocation of rhinos to Mozambique. 'We thank the South African government and all partners involved. We would like to take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to protecting Mozambique's conservation areas and to invite all friends of conservation, as well as tourists, to visit our country,' said Calenga. The CEO of Ezemvelo, Sihle Mkhize, said the project began in 2024 when Ezemvelo's renowned game capture unit expertly captured the rhinos selected for the translocation and made a commitment to secure a future for rhinos in Africa. 'The animals selected from various game reserves were given the highest level of care while kept in holding bomas awaiting favourable conditions for the road transfer. It makes us proud to have once again translocated healthy and well-cared-for animals, continuing our proud tradition,' said Mkhize. During the loading of the rhinos, the department of forestry, fisheries and the environment management inspectors and Border Management Authority (BMA) officials assisted successfully with the proper permits and compliance. The translocation was financially supported by the UK People's Postcode Lottery. 'We believe in supporting the rewilding of critically endangered species like the black rhino and creating lasting impact for people and the planet. This historic translocation to Zinave National Park simply wouldn't have happened without People's Postcode Lottery players', said its MD, Clara Govier. Mozambique minister of agriculture, environment and fisheries Roberto Albino added that Zinave National Park now hosts viable breeding populations of both black and white rhinos. 'We extend our gratitude to the South African government and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife for their generous donation of 10 critically endangered black rhinos. The successful translocation of these rhinos to Zinave National Park not only enhances biodiversity but also reinforces our commitment to establishing Mozambique's only 'big five' national park', he added.

Read more: Public urged to shape health board's anti-racism strategy - how you can help Supported by players of the People's Postcode Lottery, the platform addresses a key challenge facing charities of all sizes: a decline in volunteer numbers in recent years. Catherine Johnstone CBE, chief executive of Royal Voluntary Service, said: "We have shaped this exciting new platform in partnership with charities big and small across the country, to make sure it's valuable for causes of all sizes. "Together we can make volunteering more accessible and empower more people to give their time to support the host of invaluable charities and causes they care about, across Scotland. "The platform addresses what we know to be barriers for would-be volunteers and makes fitting volunteering into modern life easier than ever. "Thanks to support from Postcode Lottery players, we are on the cusp of a volunteer revolution, and I am passionate that as many charities and causes be a part of it as possible." Research by the Royal Voluntary Service suggests there is a pool of untapped volunteering potential. Nearly half of Scots surveyed said they would be more likely to volunteer if opportunities were available on an ad-hoc basis and could fit around their lives. The platform, set to launch publicly in the autumn, will allow volunteers to browse, filter, and connect with charities and roles that match their interests and availability. Jeff Zycinski, manager at Partnerships for Wellbeing - a Highland charity known for community transport, walks, and friendship groups - praised the new project. He said: 'Small community-based charities like ours are always looking for new ways to recruit volunteers. "It's been so great to be involved in the early development of this project which has the potential to be a game-changing tool for people looking for ways to include an element of voluntary work in their lives and so make a difference to the lives of others.' Charities can sign up now free of charge and begin uploading roles ahead of the full launch. The platform is designed to offer flexible, digital-first volunteering opportunities and reduce the administrative burden on charities. Once registered and identity-checked, volunteers can move between roles and organisations without having to re-register or repeat basic checks. West Lothian charity benefits from recent round of funding awards made by People's Postcode Trust

The West Lothian 50+ Network supports some 700 members aged 50 to 90 through a wide range of social, learning and wellbeing activities held throughout the week. A West Lothian charity which provides a wide range of social opportunities for older people has benefited from the recent round of funding awards made by the People's Postcode Trust. Thanks to funds raised by players of the People's Postcode Lottery, Bathgate-based charity West Lothian 50+ Network has received a substantial funding award from People's Postcode Trust to support its vital work tackling isolation and improving wellbeing for older people across the region. ‌ The West Lothian 50+ Network supports some 700 members aged 50 to 90 through a wide range of social, learning and wellbeing activities held throughout the week. ‌ The charity's hub in Bathgate offers a welcoming, accessible space where older people can meet for a cuppa, a chat or to take part in any of the 75 activity groups running across the region. With this new funding, the Network will respond directly to recent feedback from members calling for more weekend options, longer opening hours at the hub, and more local group opportunities. The support will allow the charity to expand what's already working and reach even more older adults who may be feeling isolated or disconnected. Jamie Seery, charity manager at West Lothian 50+ Network, said: 'We're absolutely delighted to receive this award. We hear time and again how important the Network is for our members, for their health, their confidence, their sense of community and overall wellbeing. 'Thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery, this funding means we can act on what our members have asked for and create more chances for connection right across West Lothian. Sue Bedford-Visser, Chair of the West Lothian 50+ Network, added: 'West Lothian's elderly population is growing faster than the national Scottish average, with those aged over 75 set to increase by 39 per cent by 2028. ‌ 'This rate of growth has implications for the Network as a provider of services for older people and is likely to lead to increased demand for activities, and increased resources across the board. 'This new funding from the People's Postcode Lottery is very welcome indeed.' West Lothian 50+ Network is one of many grassroots organisations across Great Britain being supported by People's Postcode Trust, thanks to the generosity of lottery players.
