Mike Pemberton wins Yukon Liberal leadership race and will be next premier
Mike Pemberton has been named the new leader of the Yukon Liberal Party and will be the territory's 11th premier. A local businessman and longtime party insider, Pemberton won the leadership race by 13 votes over former Kwanlin Dun First Nation Chief Doris Bill. Pemberton told supporters gathered Thursday night at the party's convention in Whitehorse that they have an opportunity to build on eight years of strong leadership and First Nations partnerships. "(It's) an opportunity to grow together, to grow our party, to show our strong track record of economic growth, our commitment to public safety, affordability and the well-being of all communities, big and small," he said. No date has been set for when Pemberton will be sworn in as premier but he will have little time to make his mark before he is running in the next territorial election. That election must take place on or before Nov. 3 and Pemberton has previously told The Canadian Press that he would likely call it before that deadline. In his acceptance speech Thursday he said there was "hard work and new challenges ahead." "I commit to having genuine conversations with Yukoners across the territory, and building a platform that not only reflects Yukoners' wants and needs, but inspires them as well," he said. Pemberton is chair of the Yukon branch of the federal Liberal Party and was vice president of the territorial party before stepping aside to run for leader. He will replace outgoing Premier Ranj Pillai who announced earlier this year that he would not be seeking re-election and would step down after his successor was chosen. The party said 873 ballots were cast at the leadership convention, with Pemberton getting 442 votes, 429 people voting for Bill, and two ballots being spoiled. Following the votes being announced, Bill said she was disappointed. "I really tried to reach out across the Yukon, because I believe that it's Yukoners that should vote for their leader," she said. Had she won, Bill would have been Yukon's first Indigenous premier and first to be born in the territory. She said she hopes that can still be achieved by someone. "I hope someday. You know, this may have been the closest we've ever gotten as a people to that particular job," she said. The Liberals hold a minority government in Yukon with eight of the 19 available seats in the legislature. Opposition Yukon Party Leader Currie Dixon congratulated Pemberton on his win and thanked Bill for putting her name forward. "Making the choice to enter politics is never an easy one. With increased public scrutiny and time away from family, the sacrifices are many, but our democracy requires that dedicated citizens answer the call to serve our communities," he said in a statement. No safeguards when kickboxer, 15, died
A 15-year-old three-time world kickboxing champion died from a severe traumatic brain injury after an unsanctioned fight which had no safeguards, a coroner has ruled. Alex Eastwood suddenly collapsed after the charity bout in Wigan against a 17-year-old opponent and died three days later, on 29 June last year. Coroner Michael Pemberton said the fight was unsanctioned and the safeguards that were meant to exist "simply didn't". He described the regulation of kickboxing as "chaotic and disjointed". Alex's family said the inquest had made clear his death was "not a tragic accident", but was "a failure of safeguarding and regulation". Mr Pemberton, who returned a finding of misadventure, had already taken the unusual step of writing a Prevention of Future Death Report airing his concerns about a lack of regulatory guidance in terms of any child combat sports. He said: "During the course of this hearing the evidence has reflected a chaotic and somewhat disjointed approach in which I'm not satisfied participants or parents are made fully aware of the risks that may ensue." Alex, who had just finished his GCSEs, fought three rounds at the TKMA Gym before becoming seriously unwell. The coroner said emergency services had done everything they could to try to save Alex. The coroner addressed the boy's parents who were in court, saying: "The circumstances of this tragic case have left many numb. "I'm sure there will be an encore of issues to seek changes on as part of his legacy." Mr Pemberton referred to the lack of pre-bout meeting between the fighters, referee and coaches to lay down the "ground rules" for the bout. He said: "The planning of the event and lack of risk assessment was sub-optimal in this regard." Outside the hearing, Alex's step-mother Nikita Eastwood said: "No child should go into a gym to do something they love and not come home. "What happened to him was not just a tragic accident - the inquest has made clear to us that it was a failure of safeguarding, of responsibility, and of regulation. "Alex died after a fight that we now see should never have happened." She added: "There was no national governing body involvement, and no clear or enforced safety standards. "His death must be a line in the sand so that these failures change. "We urge those in power to act swiftly and decisively to prevent the risk of this happening to another child. Coca-Cola actually cures an uncomfortable health problem
I can't drink Coca-Cola Zero because I think it tastes awful compared to regular Coke. And all that talk about being healthier because of no sugar seems like gibberish. Coca-Cola Zero contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which is shown to negatively affect metabolic health, potentially cause neurological problems, and possibly even have carcinogenic effects. But if I'm in the mood for Coke after a heavy meal to help me digest, I want plain old Coke. And it really helps. Some say it was invented as a patent medicine, containing an extract of the coca leaf - otherwise known as cocaine - which at the time was considered safe in small amounts. The drink was brewed by pharmacist John Pemberton in 1886 and marketed as a tonic for various ailments including hangovers, hiccups, and headaches. Pemberton even claimed it cured his morphine addiction. Fast forward 139 years and Coca-Cola no longer contains cocaine. Its taste is different from the original, but it remains the most popular soft drink in the world. What's more, a systematic review has confirmed a legitimate medical use for the beverage. Believe it or not, Coke is a popular household cleaning and maintenance product. By now, we have all heard about many strange uses of the drink, such as cleaning toilet bowls, loosening rust, and removing stains. It is also used in some cooking and gardening applications. A bezoar is a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract, commonly found as a hard mass in the stomach. A phytobezoar consists of plant material, such as cellulose, that can't be digested, writes The Takeout. These masses can cause nausea, vomiting, and a lack of appetite. Thankfully, a proven phytobezoar treatment is none other than Coca-Cola. One systematic study reviewed 24 papers on the matter, published from 2002 to 2012, and discovered that in "91.3% of the cases, phytobezoar resolution with Coca-Cola administration was successful, either as a single treatment (50%) or combined with further endoscopic techniques." The soft drink industry is projected to reach $660 billion by 2028, and 1.9 billion servings of Coca-Cola's (KO) range of drinks are consumed each day around the globe. Pepsi is the next in line with $178.19 billion. And despite the protests of Pepsi fans, there's definitely something special about the taste of Coca-Cola. In the company's first-quarter earnings call, when Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey was asked about the "wellness and functional" soda market trend, he explained that taste is still one of the most important factors. "So taste is in my mind still going to remain primary, but to the extent there are consumers that were willing to trade taste for ingredients, absolutely, we will follow that trend," he said. Over the last five years, Coca-Cola shares gained 57.39%, currently trading at $71.77 per share.
