5 years on, Sassoon hospital awaits approval for additional beds at 11-storey building
Pune: Five years since admission to patients began in the 11-storey building at BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital (BJMC & SGH), approval for 504 additional beds is awaiting official approval from the state's medical education and drugs department (MEDD). The building houses the paediatric, pulmonary, orthopaedic and radiology departments. It has affected recruitment of staff to handle these additional patients and funds needed to buy medicines and consumables, officials at the BJMC & SGH said. They added that once the file is approved by MEDD, it will be sent to the state finance department for final approval. The building was planned in 2009 after the swine flu epidemic but took 11 years to construct. When the Covid-19 pandemic struck, the building was thrown open on an urgent basis to admit serious patients. Dr Eknath Pawar, dean at BJMC & SGH, said, "As of now we are working at 66% of staff strength at the hospital and medical college. For the hospital's old buildings, we have an approval for 1,296 beds and for that we have an approved staff strength of 3,091." As per the information obtained from the hospital, of the 2,359 approved posts for class 1-4 employees at the old buildings, only 1,565 are filled and 794 are vacant. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Of the 732 approved posts for BJ Medical College, 424 are filled and 308 are vacant. Dr Pawar said, "We had in 2022 sent a proposal seeking approval for 504 beds at the 11-storey building and also the staff required for those beds. We are yet to get a response on it. About the vacancies in the approved posts, we have already issued a tender to fill in the class four posts and in the next two months, 350 workers will be recruited. For class 1 and 2 posts, recruitment process is under way via the Maharashtra Public Service Commission. " The acute shortage of staff gravely affects patient services. Maya Jagtap, who has her relative admitted at the 11-storey building's orthopedic department ward, said, "Often there are no nurses or class 4 workers available to take the patient from the ward to the radiology department for scans. We have to be near the building all the time so that we can help our kin." Hasan Mushrif, minister of medical education, said, "I will look into it and if the approval is pending at our level, I will get it done in one week. I will immediately follow up on the proposal with the secretary of MEDD." Dheeraj Kumar, secretary, MEDD, could not be contacted for his comment despite several attempts. Rajiv Nivatkar, commissioner, MEDD, said, "I am out of town now; I will get back when I have information." City-based health activist and an alumnus of BJ Medical College, Dr Sanjay Dabhade, said that first it took 11 years for the 11-storey building to be constructed and then it was opened only when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out and now govt is delaying approving the beds. "The hospital is always struggling to manage the existing patient load but with additional patients coming in, it will soon reach a breaking point. Why should it take five years to approve the beds which are already in use? This hospital is not only the hope for serious patients who come from different districts of Maharashtra but also for many homeless and poor people. Without enough staff, patient services are hampered gravely and there would be constant conflict between patients and healthcare workers. State govt must immediately approve these beds and the staff required," he said.

MVA members will soon meet on alliance for civic polls: Pawar
Pune: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said he wanted MVA to contest the civic polls together and senior members from his party, along with those from Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), Peasants and Workers Party, and other parties, will soon sit together and deliberate on the alliance formula. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Hinting at Sena (UBT) getting a bigger share in Mumbai, Pawar said, "Among the MVA partners, Uddhav Thackeray's party is in a stronger position in Mumbai. Though a decision on the alliance is yet to be made, we will have to consider his party's strength." He said that after Supreme Court's verdict, civic elections cannot be delayed any further. "Our assumption is that the process for the polls will begin in the next three months. We wish to go with an the alliance, but no decision has been taken so far," Pawar told reporters in Baramati. Without naming his nephew and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, he criticised the incident where PDCC Bank was kept open in Baramati till 11pm on Wednesday. The Sharad Pawar-backed panel will take on Neelkantheshwar, Ajit Pawar's panel, in Baramati's Malegaon cooperative sugar factory election on Sunday. Pawar said, "During Lok Sabha election, the bank was found open till late in the night, and this is the second instance. Unless instructions are given by those who control the bank, why would bank employees keep it open? It is only during the election phase, and for the second time, that bank employees feel like serving the people till late at night." While many in the opposition have criticised the state govt for including Hindi as the third language from Std I, NCP (SP) chief tool a cautious stand. He said, "There should not be a compulsion to learn Hindi, but students cannot ignore the language. Nearly 55 to 60% of the country's population speaks Hindi, and there is no issue in learning the language to have better communication. But there should not be any compulsion. "

Charge not proved, ticketless traveller who beat TT let off
Mumbai: Observing that the incident is an exception in the peaceful career of an educated youth having prospects, and if any sentence is imposed it may create hurdle in him getting employment, a sessions court let off a 30-year-old man on a bond of good behaviour for travelling ticketless and trespassing on railway property. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused, was however, acquitted on charges of assaulting the TTE. Rahul Pawar, 30, a resident of Navi Mumbai, was found guilty for offences under the Railways Act. The case was registered in April 2021. The incident occurred on April 1, 2021, when Chief Ticket Inspector, during a routine checking, came across Pawar travelling without a ticket at Nerul Railway Station. Prosecution stated that Pawar refused to pay the fine, became argumentative and attempted to flee. He allegedly abused and threatened railway personnel and ran away by jumping a compound wall. A video recording of the incident was also made. While the court found insufficient evidence to prove charges of assault, voluntarily causing hurt, intentional insult, or criminal intimidation, it did confirm that Pawar was found travelling without a valid ticket and trespassed onto railway property. "To establish the charge of intentional insult as well as criminal intimidation, the witnesses should narrate the details. In the absence of material particulars of the words spoken by the accused at the relevant time and in the absence of specific evidence of conduct of accused, the charge cannot be proved," the judge said. During the sentencing, Pawar stated that he was under stress at the time of the incident. He informed the court that he is a graduate working temporary jobs as a Data Entry Operator and security person, and that his family is dependent on his income following his father's recent demise. Considering the nature of the offence, Pawar's dependency, his lack of prior criminal antecedents, and his potential for future employment, the court decided against imposing imprisonment or a fine. tnn

Sharad Pawar hints at continuing alliance with MVA constituents for civic polls: ‘will take a final decision'
Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar indicated Friday that the party's pre-poll alliance with constituents of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will continue during the upcoming civic polls, similar to how it was during the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Maharashtra. He also expressed the need to give due importance to the Shiv Sena (UBT) for its strength in Mumbai. 'The Supreme Court has given a timeframe to hold civic polls in the state. It cannot be delayed, and our prediction is that the election process is likely to start in three months. It has not been decided yet but it is our attempt to bring all MVA partners together. We all, Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and other small parties will discuss and take a final decision on whether there is willingness to contest the civic polls together,' said Pawar. 'We have not done any discussion but in Mumbai, the Shiv Sena (UBT) is more powerful among us. So that will have to be taken into consideration,' he added. The NCP(SP) chief refused to comment on the war of words between the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) during the Sena's foundation day events on June 19, Thursday. During the function, Shinde accused the Sena (UBT) of looting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), while Uddhav vowed to reclaim Mumbai. Regarding the debate on introducing Hindi language in Maharashtra's schools, Pawar said, 'It should not be made mandatory. However, ignoring it is not in the interest of students. Those who want to learn should be allowed to do so. Students should decide under the guidance of their parents.' The NCP(SP) chief said that around 60 per cent of the country's population speaks Hindi, and the language cannot be ignored as it enables communication with people across the country. Pointing out that the increase in rainfall across the state will boost the groundwater level, Pawar said, 'The situation seems good this time as there will be sufficient availability of water this year. However, if there is damage to crops due to excess rainfall, the state government should provide compensation.'

MVA constituents will deliberate on contesting civic polls together: Pawar
Opposition parties have accused the BJP of trying to impose Hindi in Maharashtra through deception to wipe out the Marathi language and culture Press Trust of India Pune NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said that the constituents of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will deliberate on contesting the upcoming civic elections in Maharashtra together. As the Supreme Court has directed that municipal elections be conducted in the state, the process will begin soon, Pawar told reporters in Baramati. Though we have not yet held discussions with the Congress, our party, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), the Shetkari Kamgar Paksh, and other parties will come together and explore the possibility of contesting the polls together. A final decision will be taken, as we wish to fight the polls together, he said. Asked whether the MVA would jointly contest the civic polls in Mumbai, he said no such discussion has taken place so far. Among us, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) has a strong base in Mumbai, and their opinion will be taken into consideration, he added. The Bal Thackeray-founded undivided Shiv Sena had controlled the cash-rich Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for more than two decades before it came under administrator rule a few years ago. After last year's assembly elections, in which the MVA could win only 46 of the state's 288 seats, the upcoming local body polls are expected to be another high-stakes contest. Responding to a query concerning Hindi as a third language in Maharashtra, Pawar said it should not be made mandatory. It should remain optional. Those who want to choose Hindi can opt for it. Just because 50 to 60 per cent of the population speaks Hindi, the language cannot be made compulsory for everyone, he said. Opposition parties have accused the BJP of trying to impose Hindi in Maharashtra through deception to wipe out the Marathi language and culture after the state government recently issued an order making Hindi generally the third language for students of Classes 1 to 5 in English and Marathi medium schools.
