Bundesliga star opens the door to lining out for Republic of Ireland
Bundesliga star Paul Nebel has opened the door to a possible international switch to the Republic of Ireland. Nebel plays as a winger for Mainz and scored ten goals in the German top flight this season. The 22-year-old qualifies for Ireland through his maternal grandmother despite representing Germany at various underage levels. He is currently part of Germany's squad for the U21 Euros, starring in their victory over Slovenia earlier this week. But Nebel has not ruled out the possibility of lining out for the Boys in Green in the future. "After the season, they [the FAI] started courting me more intensively. That's nice," Nebel said. "If things don't work out with the DFB at some point, then I'll have to think about it, because Ireland is also in my heart." Irish hopes should be cautioned, though, by the fact that it might not be long before Nebel is called up to the senior squad. 'Of course, one wishes to play for the senior national team at some point,' Nebel said. 'I've been with the DFB since the U15s [since 2017] and am very proud to represent the jersey.'

Bundesliga 2024-25: Dortmund snatches last Champions League spot; Bayer Leverkusen bids adieu to Alonso with draw
Borussia Dortmund cruised past relegated Holstein Kiel 3-0 on Saturday to finish fourth and snatch the last Champions League spot for next season, in the best comeback of the last seven matchdays in Bundesliga history. Niko Kovac's Dortmund won six of their last seven matches to climb from 10th to fourth in the standings and finish on 57 points, two ahead of Freiburg who lost to third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. No other Bundesliga team have managed such a comeback in the last seven matchdays. Bayern Munich had secured the title two weeks ago with Bayer Leverkusen finishing runner-up. Dortmund, needing three goals to be guaranteed a top four finish irrespective of results in the other games, got off to a dream start when Serhou Guirassy converted a third-minute penalty for the lead. Kiel was then left with 10 players when Carl Johansson was sent off with a straight red card but the host could not make the extra man count until the break. It did, however, score two minutes after the restart with Marcel Sabitzer slotting in from the edge of the box to make it 2-0 and Felix Nmecha added another in the 72nd minute to seal their European spot. Mainz levelled with a penalty from Jonathan Burkardt in the 63rd minute. Mainz up to third in Bundesliga after win at Borussia Mönchengladbach
MONCHENGLADBACH, Germany (AP) — Mainz continued its push for a place in next year's Champions League with an accomplished 3-1 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach that lifted it into third place in the Bundesliga on Friday. Paul Nebel got the opener before halftime with a deflected shot that stranded Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Jonas Omlin. Dominik Kohr doubled the advantage six minutes into the second half when he pounced on a rebound in the box and fired home. Stefan Lainer got the home side back into the game with less than 20 minutes left but Nadiem Amiri restored Mainz's two-goal cushion just four minutes later. The result extended Mainz's unbeaten league run against Mönchengladbach to nine league games and kept it on course for its best ever Bundesliga finish, above its fifth place in 2012. Mönchengladbach was in eighth place. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press
