PKR Sabah backs MACC probe into mining scandal
Mustapha (second right) and Kasim (to his left) watching a briefing on NMM 2025. KOTA KINABALU (June 19): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah fully supports the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)'s investigation into the mining licence corruption scandal involving several state assemblymen. PKR Sabah chairman Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud emphasized that the Madani Government does not tolerate corruption, contrary to claims by other parties and an upcoming anti-corruption rally. He said MACC's move to record statements from several assemblymen and the possibility of court charges demonstrates the government's seriousness in addressing the issue. When asked whether the scandal could affect potential cooperation between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, Mustapha said such investigations are part of the normal process. 'Corruption is an issue that transcends political boundaries. Other parties have also been involved and charged in court,' he said. 'However, we should not use this as a basis to reject any form of cooperation. Cooperation is not only political — it also includes working together on manifestos and shared aspirations to combat corruption in Sabah.' He was speaking to reporters after closing the Nutrition Month Malaysia (NMM) 2025 programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) on Thursday. Mustapha was responding to a recent statement by MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, who said two assemblymen and a businessman will be charged in connection with the alleged corruption scandal. On another note, Mustapha, who is also Deputy Higher Education Minister, lauded the annual NMM programme organised by UMS' Food Science and Nutrition Faculty for promoting awareness on shifting from 'sick care' to disease prevention. Citing the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2024, he said young adults, including university students, are consuming less fruits and vegetables, have high sugary drink intake, and lead sedentary lifestyles. He also highlighted rising concerns over mental health issues and increasing rates of overweight and obesity. 'These findings are very worrying and need to be given serious attention by all levels of society, especially our youth and students, who are the backbone of the nation. 'The health of our youth today will shape their future capabilities and competitiveness,' he said. Mustapha welcomed the initiative by UMS and supporting agencies in organising NMM 2025, stating that building a healthy generation should begin from a young age. 'This requires a comprehensive and integrated approach involving government, the private sector, industries and the public,' he added. Also present at the programme was UMS Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor.

Putrajaya to clarify SST expansion, vows no burden on M40 and B40 groups
ISKANDAR PUTERI: The government will issue a clearer explanation on the implementation of the revised Sales and Services Tax (SST) framework, which comes into effect on July 1, amid growing public confusion, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said recent public statements had led to misunderstandings, particularly over which goods and services will be affected. "There has been confusion, like the claim that bananas will be taxed under SST, but it refers to imported bananas. "We agree that better communication is needed, but our priority remains clear, not to burden the lower-income group or the M40," he told reporters after attending after a Parti Keadilan Rakyat event today. He said the government's aim is to target non-essential imports while ensuring essential goods remain exempt or taxed minimally. Anwar said that although the policy will proceed, there is room for adjustments on specific items if warranted. "We are not reviewing the policy, but if certain items need tweaking, we can do that. "People are upset before reading the list. Let's read it first," he said. On June 9, the government announced a targeted SST revision. While sales tax rates remain unchanged for essential items, a 5 or 10 per cent rate will apply to non-essential goods. The services tax will be extended to six new categories, namely, leasing, construction, financial services, private healthcare, education, and beauty services. Critics, including Mydin managing director Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin, have raised concerns about taxing imported fruits, arguing that it could impact lower-income consumers. Anwar, however, encouraged consumers to consider local alternatives. "Some say even the poor eat imported fruit. I think that's manageable; choose local fruits," he said. The SST revision is part of the government's broader fiscal strategy to improve education, healthcare, and welfare services through enhanced revenue collection.

Nik Nazmi must stay true to his principles
The position of minister was not a mandate from the people, but rather an appointment by the Prime Minister due to one's standing in the party. Nik Nazmi SHAH ALAM – Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad must remain steadfast in his principle to resign after losing in all contests at the branch and central levels of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), in line with the reformist ideals he upholds. Former PKR Information Coordination Secretary, Iswardy Morni, said that the position of minister was not a mandate from the people, but rather an appointment by the Prime Minister due to Nik Nazmi's standing in the party. He said the same situation has occurred involving leaders from other parties. "The people's mandate refers to his position as a Member of Parliament. "What would be inappropriate is if he resigns as an MP. That would not be right," he told Sinar on Tuesday. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when asked on Monday about Nik Nazmi's status in the Cabinet, said that the leave period for the former PKR vice president would end this week. However, he explained that no final decision had been made yet, and the government was still giving Nik Nazmi space to resume his duties. Iswardy added that he believed the decision made by Nik Nazmi was due to his awareness that party members had rejected him as a party leader. 'As such, the new leadership deserves to be given higher positions. '(Datuk Seri R) Ramanan, as the new PKR vice president, should be promoted to minister to replace Nik Nazmi and (Datuk Seri) Amirudin Shari should be appointed as Economy Minister due to his experience governing Selangor,' he said. He also opined that the Prime Minister's daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar should be appointed as Selangor Menteri Besar after winning the post of deputy president. 'A by-election should be held, just like what happened during the Kajang Move,' he said. More Like This
