National Reading Day 2025: How To Cultivate A Reading Habit?
Last Updated: National Reading Day 2025: The day honours P.N. Panicker, the "Father of the Library and Literacy Movement," for promoting literacy and establishing public libraries. National Reading Day 2025: Observed in India every year on June 19, National Reading Day to honour Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker (P.N. Panicker), a visionary who played a pivotal role in fostering a culture of reading across Kerala. Widely revered as the 'Father of the Library and Literacy Movement", Panicker dedicated his life to promoting literacy and empowering communities through books. His tireless efforts laid the foundation for a knowledge-driven society and continue to inspire generations to embrace the transformative power of reading. Though the national observance of Reading Day is a relatively recent initiative, Kerala has been commemorating P.N. Panicker's contributions since 1996. The state began observing June 19, the day Panicker passed away in 1995, as a tribute to his transformative role in Kerala's literacy movement. In 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially declared June 19 as National Reading Day, extending the observance to a national level. The day honours P.N. Panicker's unparalleled efforts in ushering Kerala into an era of universal literacy. A teacher by profession, Panicker spearheaded a grassroots library movement in the early to mid-20th century, significantly expanding access to books and knowledge. His mission to instil the habit of reading among the masses laid the foundation for what would become one of India's most literate states. Through his leadership in establishing public libraries across Kerala, Panicker earned lasting recognition as the 'Father of the Library and Literacy Movement." The first library that he dedicated to the public was established in 1926. At the time, it was called the 'Sanadanadharmam Library". The various public libraries that he helped set up across Kerala over the next several years laid the foundation for the formation of the Travancore Library Association in 1945. The association, initially comprising 47 local libraries, later evolved into the Kerala Granthsala Sangham (KGS). After Kerala gained statehood in 1956, the KGS grew significantly to include nearly 6,000 libraries. The body ultimately became the Kerala State Library Council after being taken over by the Kerala government in 1977. National Reading Day 2025 is the perfect occasion to rekindle one's love for reading or to instil it if they never had one to begin with. It is also a great opportunity to bring together like-minded people to build a community of readers. National Reading Day focuses on the importance that books and the wisdom contained in them hold for the holistic development of humanity. How To Cultivate A Reading Habit Join a community of book readers online or at a local library. Exchange literary takeaways with fellow readers. Buy a collection of books of your favourite genre. Be patient. Do not get discouraged if the initial chapters of a book do not interest you. Read till the end. First Published:

Reading is alive, it has just changed with the times: CM
Reading is far from a dying habit, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said. He was delivering the keynote address after performing the State-level inauguration of the 30th Reading Day celebrations organised by the P.N. Panicker Foundation here on Thursday. Underscoring the evolving nature of literacy in the digital age, the Chief Minister said, 'The age of reading is not ending; reading is just changing according to the times.' Instead of physical books, people now made use of digital platforms and podcasts. Even as there was talk of change, the basis of the wealth of knowledge was still those books, Mr. Vijayan said. Panicker's contribution Recalling the contributions of P.N. Panicker, Mr. Vijayan said he was one of the most prominent leaders of the library movement. He was considered to have taught the Malayali to read. He set up the Sanadanadharmam library at his birthplace Neelamperoor to enter public life. His efforts to set up libraries across the State and promote them were a part of the State's history, the Chief Minister said. Panicker's message of 'Read and grow, think and gain wisdom' was still relevant. Each Reading Day observance was a reminder of modern Kerala's rich culture, he said. National campaign He spoke of the State's historical role in spearheading reading movements and affirmed its continued commitment to nurturing a reading culture among its people. The celebrations mark the beginning of a month-long national campaign to promote reading. The observance will continue till July 18, with activities spanning all States, the Chief Minister said. Schoolchildren who attended the event recited a reading pledge prepared by the foundation. The ambitious 'One lakh Vaayanasadhas' project that aims to organise 1,00,000 reading forums across the country was rolled out on the occasion. Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty presided. P.N. Panicker Foundation vice chairman N. Balagopal spoke.

Kaynes Semicon, L&T arm to acquire Fujitsu General's power modules business
Kaynes Semicon and L&T Semiconductor Technologies (LTSCT) are acquiring Japanese Fujitsu General 's power modules business for Rs 118.34 crore. Fujitsu will transfer the business to Larsen & Toubro's fabless chip company and related production facilities to Kaynes, which will in turn manufacture these products for LTSCT, the companies said. The transaction is expected to close on June 23, pending regulatory clearance under Japan's Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act. 'The new OSAT facility being setup in Sanand, Gujarat, is launching its operations with a focus on the global power device packaging market,' Raghu Panicker, chief executive of Kaynes Semicon, told ET. Mysuru-based Kaynes is one of the production contractors for LTSCT. The LTSCT specialises in semiconductor product development, manufacturing, and sales. Kaynes is one of the four companies under the India Semiconductor Mission 1.0 building OSATs in the country. Discover the stories of your interest Blockchain 5 Stories Cyber-safety 7 Stories Fintech 9 Stories E-comm 9 Stories ML 8 Stories Edtech 6 Stories Panicker said the deal is supported by two major initiatives: a multi-million-dollar, high-volume service agreement with its customer Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (AOS) and the acquisition of three power packaging lines from Fujitsu Electronics Ltd Japan. 'The partnership with AOS will cover core power devices like IGBTs, power modules and MOSFETs with volumes projected to reach nearly 670 million units annually, while the Fujitsu technology provides immediate capability for high-reliability automotive and industrial-grade power modules, adding a production capacity of approximately 0.6 million units per month,' he said. These moves position the company as a significant new player in the power electronics supply chain , Panicker said. By combining a foundational, high-volume customer with advanced packaging technology and immediate production capacity, the company is poised to meet the surging global demand for power semiconductors driven by the electric vehicles , renewable energy , and industrial automation sectors, he said. This establishes a vital new capability in India's domestic semiconductor ecosystem and addresses the global need for a more resilient and diverse manufacturing footprint for power devices. L&T has invested more than $300 million to create LTSCT. Fujitsu General, in a regulatory filing on Monday, announced the divestiture of its power module business operated by its consolidated subsidiary, Fujitsu General Electronics (FGEL). This transaction is expected to result in the recording of an extraordinary gain of approximately 2 billion yen (about $13.8 million) from the business transfer in the April-June 2025 quarter, it said. Reasons for the Divestiture FGEL's tech solutions division is involved in the development, manufacturing, and sale of electronic devices, as well as the manufacturing of information and communication equipment. The divestiture of the power module business is part of a broader portfolio transformation within the electronic device business, aimed at strengthening the Fujitsu General Group's business foundation, it said.

Kaynes Semicon opens chip design centre in Oman with its IT ministry
Kaynes Semicon , a 100% subsidiary of Kaynes Technology India , opened its first overseas chip design centre in Muscat, Oman on Sunday. This was done in partnership with the ministry of transport, communications and information technology and the ministry of labour, Oman. The new very large-scale integration (VLSI) design centre will focus on both front-end and back-end chip design processes. Raghu Panicker, CEO, Kaynes Semicon, told ET that the company will train 80 to 100 students each year in advanced VLSI design technologies. "The centre will help students with designing complex integrated circuits, chip fabrication, wafer preparation, etc," he explained. Asked about the reason for the foray into Oman, he said that the design centre would be fully funded by the Oman government . Ramesh Kannan, MD of Kaynes Technology India , said, 'With this step, we are extending our plan of building a strong semiconductor ecosystem beyond India, supporting local governments'. Mysuru-based Kaynes Semicon, could be the first company to produce India's first packaged chip by July this year, ET had reported on April 1. Kaynes received approval from the Union Cabinet in September last year for setting up an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat with a Rs 3,307 crore investment. The capacity of this unit will be 6.3 million chips per day. The Middle East is seeing a slew of investments. This includes the US having a preliminary agreement with the UAE to allow it to import 500,000 of Nvidia's most advanced AI chips a year, starting this year. The Nvidia deal would boost the country's construction of data centres vital to developing artificial intelligence models. OpenAI also plans a data centre in the UAE. VLSI research involves tackling complex challenges. Students who are exposed to these activities develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills, Panicker said. The centre provides access to cutting-edge tools and techniques. "Students will gain access to industry-grade EDA tools for real-time project simulations. The programme equips students with the expertise to immediately contribute to real-world semiconductor projects," he said. These tools are often a direct result of VLSI research and development. Students who understand VLSI research are better prepared for advanced roles in the semiconductor industry, where they can contribute to developing new technologies, he said. "This intensive experience in industry-standard design workflows prepares graduates to tackle the complexities of chip development, from specification to silicon, making them highly valuable assets in the global semiconductor industry," Panicker said.
