Roads dug up and left like that, 7x sectors gasp under neglect

1 2 Noida: Residents across Noida's 7x sectors (74–79) and adjacent areas like Sector 116 have been reeling under severe dust pollution for over a month, as roads—main and service alike—have been dug up by various departments and left unrepaired. The worsening condition has coincided with deteriorating air quality in the region, with AQI levels in Noida hovering around 191 on June 11, 172 on June 13 and 138 on June 14, marked as 'poor', according to IMD data. "The whole 7X area, especially sectors 77, 76, 74, 78, 79 and even Sector 116, is suffering due to the poor working of Noida Authority WC-6, the water department, IGL and others," said Amit Gupta, ex-AOA president of Prateek Visteria and a Sector 77 resident. "They have damaged multiple roads and left them as they are. For instance, Sector 76-77 main road, Sector 75 main road, Sector 116's service road dug up by PVVNL in Feb, and the Sector 76 road from Skytech Matrott to Amrapali Silicon City have all been left unrepaired. The dust and broken tiles are everywhere." Gupta also pointed to the damage caused outside the air monitoring station in Sector 116, where the Noida Authority's water department had carried out work on a sewage treatment plant pipeline and failed to restore the road post-treatment. "It's ironic that the area next to an air monitoring station itself is a source of dust," he said. Other affected spots include the Sector 75 road opposite Indosam, also dug up by PVVNL for cable work and left unrepaired, and the Sector 116 main and internal roads, which continue to generate large dust clouds every time a vehicle passes. While Gupta has written to the Noida Authority CEO and the chairman of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), no concrete redress has come yet. "I am still waiting for any kind of action," he said. Brijesh Singh, a resident of Sector 78, said the scale of dust pollution in the past six months has been 'unprecedented'. "It seems the officials are simply not serious about the issue," he added. Avnish Kumar, a resident of Sector 77, also expressed frustration. "Despite repeated damage to roads and tiles, no accountability has been fixed. No action has been taken against the staff or contractors responsible," he said. The 7x sectors—developed around a decade ago—have a residential population of nearly 1.5 to 2 lakh, including neighbouring villages. Residents fear that if urgent action is not taken, the worsening air quality and public health risk will only intensify. An official response from the Noida Authority is awaited.

Noida power boost: Sector 25 transformer upgraded to 10 MVA; 20k consumers in 3 sectors to benefit

NOIDA: Over 20,000 consumers in Sectors 25, 21, and 12 are set to receive a better power supply as the transformer capacity at the 33/11 kV substation in Sector 25 was increased from 5 MVA to 10 MVA on Saturday. According to officials, this was done to address the increasing load on the existing transformer amid rising power demand in the area. With the capacity enhancement, the power distribution network of the three sectors will experience a more streamlined supply. "On June 7, the work of increasing the capacity of the power converter from 5 MVA to 10 MVA was completed at the substation in Sector 25 under the business plan works of 2024-25. With this work, an uninterrupted power supply will be provided to the consumers of Sectors 25, 21, and 12, especially in the summer season," said Sanjay Kumar Jain, Chief Engineer, Noida power department, PVVNL. Earlier, on May 21, a new transformer of 5 MVA was installed at Sector 80. With that, consumers of Sectors 80 and 112 were targeted to benefit from the infrastructure upgrade, said Jain. Jain further stated that this step was taken due to the increase in demand for electricity in the summer months. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Windows Users Don't Forget To Do This Before Sunday Read More Undo "Given the increasing heat and power consumption, this upgradation was the need of the hour. This work will not only increase the availability of electricity but will also maintain the stability of voltage, which will provide relief to consumers from the problem of low voltage or power cuts," he said. According to a power department official, the capacity of power substations is being increased as per requirement, not apart from designated areas where they are scheduled for upgrade. The move follows extensive surveys conducted earlier of densely populated areas and the successive power demand over the years. As against the current power demand of 1700 to 1800 MW, the peak power demand in Noida is expected to cross 2700 MW in July and August. As per Ramesh Chandra, Executive Engineer of the Sector 25 substation, the transformer capacity enhancement was done keeping in mind the needs of both industrial and residential sectors.

Noida's leaning threats: Storm leaves a line of tilted poles near Sec 101 metro station

Noida: Several electricity poles damaged during last week's storm continue to lean precariously outside Sector 101 metro station, endangering commuters. Locals said some poles were damaged in recent rainfall, while others have been tilted for months. Noida Authority said PVVNL installed the poles and should remove them. Gaurav Kumar, who works at a grocery store in the area, said, "People continue to move around the tilted poles, because of the absence of any barricades or warning signage." PVVNL officials, however, said these poles are dead and are not in use. "Even if the poles are old and not in use, they can fall anytime. Children use this road to go to school. Who will be responsible if something happens?" asked another local, requesting anonymity. RP Singh, general manager, Noida Authority, said these power structures come under PVVNL. PVVNL Noida's chief engineer Sanjay Kumar Jain said a team was directed to visit the spot and take necessary actions. Saurabh Pandey, executive engineer, PVVNL, said some poles near the drain in front of Sector 101 metro station are dead and not in use. "It appears those poles are not in use as new infrastructure was developed in the area. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo We will get them removed soon," he said. On May 21, a severe dust storm along with rainfall wreaked havoc across Noida and Greater Noida, triggering massive traffic disruptions, property damage, and chaos on major roads, particularly the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. Hundreds of commuters found themselves stranded for nearly three hours after a large electricity pole collapsed around 9pm, blocking the Greater Noida-bound carriageway of the expressway. The storm also brought down nearly 200 trees, streetlights, and hoardings, leaving key routes choked and impassable for hours. Three persons died and seven suffered injuries during severe weather conditions in Ghaziabad earlier this month. These incidents took place at four different locations. A 40-year-old man died after he was crushed by a tree in Madhuban Bapudham while returning home from office. In another incident, a wall of a private school collapsed on a slum in Khoda Colony, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old woman and injuring six members of her family. In the third incident, a 35-year-old woman died after she fell into a drain during the storm, following the sound of lightning, while returning to her house in Masuri. In the fourth incident, a hoarding collapsed at the GDA intersection in Nandgram, causing severe injuries to a motorcyclist who became trapped under it. In Noida, a 45-year-old teacher died after a tree fell on him inside NTPC township on Wednesday night. Ramkishan, who worked with a school, had stepped out around 7pm for a walk. He was only 100 metres away from his house when the tree crushed him to death. Residents of Migsun Ultimo in Greater Noida's Omicron-3 protested against the builder after a large metal shed fell from the terrace of a 21-floor tower, killing a 50-year-old woman and her 2-year-old grandson. The child's parents are both IT professionals from Bokaro in Jharkhand. Residents staged a protest at the Omicron roundabout, demanding action against the builder. Cops took five persons into custody for blocking the road, after which representatives of the builder and residents held discussions.

New substation to serve 12k consumers in Vasundhara

Ghaziabad: A new 33/11 kV substation, constructed at a cost of Rs 15 crore in Sector 7, is set to energise Vasundhara starting next week. In addition to Sector 7, the substation will also supply power to sectors 1, 2 and 3, as well as parts of sectors 5 and 9. Currently, the substation at Sector 16 supplies power to sectors 1, 2 and 3, and the upcoming substation is expected to alleviate the load on the existing substation. "We will make the new substation in Sector 7 operational by June 3 or 4. Its trials and synchronisation are complete. UP Awas Vikas constructed it and handed it over to usWe are now waiting for its feeder code from the grid, expected by next week, after which we will make the substation operational," said Amit Saxena, executive engineer of the Ghaziabad power department, PVVNL. According to Saxena, the new substation is set to benefit around 12,000 consumers across these sectors.

Dust storm, rain leave behind a trail of damage, outages in GB Nagar

NOIDA: A powerful dust storm accompanied by gusty winds and light rainfall swept across Noida and Greater Noida on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, causing widespread power outages, infrastructure damage, and traffic chaos in several parts of Gautam Budh Nagar district, officials said. Nearly 400 electricity poles and 40 transformers were damaged in Greater Noida due to the high-speed winds, said Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (PVVNL), said Rahul Sharma, executive engineer, PVVNL, Greater Noida. Power supply was disrupted in multiple villages and residential sectors under the jurisdiction of 33/11 kV substations in Dankaur, Rabupura, Bhata, and Salarpur, among other areas, officials said. 'Electricity supply to villages dependent on these substations has been interrupted. Our maintenance teams are working round the clock to restore the damaged poles and transformers,' Sharma added. In Greater Noida's Balaji Enclave, Shahberi residents complained of struggling with prolonged outages. 'There has been no electricity for the last six hours. It's affecting our daily routine, and power tripping is already a regular issue here. We request authorities to fix this permanently,' Amit Chauhan, a resident, said on Saturday morning. In urban sectors too, the storm left its mark. In JP Aman Society, Sector 151, strong winds tore off windows and doors in some flats of a multi-storey building. A video of the damaged flat surfaced on social media, sparking criticism over poor construction quality. 'The storm was so intense that windows and doors were ripped off. It's shocking to see this in a high-rise where we've put our life savings,' said Ritu Malhotra, a local resident. Elsewhere in Jewar, wind and rain brought brief relief from the heat but led to fallen trees and snapped wires. 'The sudden storm cooled the weather. But we lost electricity for hours. Trees fell across roads, worsening the situation,' said Mahesh Pradhan, a local resident. Meanwhile, in Noida, Saturday afternoon's gusty winds and rain caused multiple incidents. Around 4.35pm, a traffic signal pole collapsed near DM Chowk in Sector 27, damaging a Kia Seltos car. But no one was injured. 'The wind was strong and brought the pole down. The car was damaged but the occupants are safe. We've informed Noida Authority for a replacement,' said Surendra Singh, traffic sub-inspector. In another incident, a Renault Triber car caught fire on Film City Road, leading to a traffic jam on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. The driver evacuated safely. 'Traffic was diverted to internal roads and the vehicle was removed by crane. The cause is yet to be confirmed,' said traffic inspector Shailendra Singh. Trees were uprooted at several locations. In Sector 27, a tree fell outside Kailash Hospital, blocking access temporarily. Another tree collapsed near Sector 16, affecting movement towards Sector 18. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Noida experienced very light to light rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph, briefly reaching 50 kmph on Saturday. The surface winds also carried dust, leading to reduced visibility and traffic slowdowns. Rainfall data, however, was unavailable. In Gautam Budh Nagar, the IMD reported a minimum temperature of 26.2 degree Celsius (°C) and maximum of 42°C. The forecast for the coming days predicts partly cloudy skies, with surface winds of 15–25 kmph, occasionally gusting to 35 kmph, and possible thunderstorms. The temperature is expected to remain between 40–42°C and 26–28°C till May 23. While weather conditions have brought some respite from the scorching heat, restoration work for electricity and road clearance is still ongoing. Officials have urged residents to remain patient and cooperate with civic agencies.
