‘Burha Pahar hamlets ready to shift to plains'
Daltonganj: All the six hamlets of the Burha Pahar, collectively known as Tiseeya, located in the territory of the Palamu Tiger Reserve in Latehar district, are willing to move out and settle in the plains, officials have said. The people of these hamlets are now completely fed up with the substandard living conditions, where they struggle for even the smallest necessities, especially during the rainy season. Furthermore, these six hamlets have a very scattered population, with one hamlet being five kilometres away from another. "For 22 years, Teesiya was the second capital of the Maoists, who were finally driven out in 2022 after a prolonged fight against them by the security forces," said the police sources. The deputy director of the south division of PTR, Kumar Ashish, said, "There are around 70 houses, and the number of the inmates of these houses is around 400." The human population consists of a particularly vulnerable tribal group, namely Kisan, Nagesia, Korwa, and OBC Yadav. Gram Sabhas of the six hamlets want to shift. "It's their voluntary decision. There is no pressure or coercion from the PTR," said Ashish. Sources said the successful relocation of 22 families from Jaigeer hillock and 35 families from Kujrum, both under the space of the PTR, to Polpol in Palamu district, has rekindled the hope of the residents of the six hamlets of the Burha Pahar to restart a new lease of life in the plains. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo "Rains are to come. The Burha Nadi gets into a spate. It cuts off the six hamlets cut from the rest of the district," said sources in touch with the residents of the six hamlets. Among the six hamlets, two, namely Semarkhar and Bardara, are right on the top of the Budha Pahar, about 1,000 meters above sea level. The remaining four hamlets, Khuntikaram, Hesalbar 1 and 2, and Nawatoli, are in the foothills of the Burha Pahar. Nawatoli hamlet is right on the border of Chhattisgarh. "We will send a proposal for the relocation of these six hamlets to the National Tiger Conservation Authority in Delhi," added Ashish. The officer said, "They are looking for suitable land and location. Once they decide, the administration will find out ways and means for their rehabilitation based on the availability of the land."

CII's Madurai vision document outlines reimagining city in 2035
Madurai: Confederation of Indian Industry's (CII) Pudhu vision document for Madurai has outlined a 2035 roadmap for reimagining the city as a dual hub of heritage and modernity. Tamil Nadu IT and digital services minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan launched the document on Tuesday. Lauding the document as "comprehensive and thought-provoking," PTR said it effectively articulates the socio-economic aspirations of southern Tamil Nadu and offers practical suggestions for aligning govt action with regional needs. "This document combines both grand ambition and granular detail. It tackles everything from heritage and tourism to IT and industrial corridors," he said. PTR candidly reflected on Madurai's historic stature and its relatively slow growth in recent decades. "In Roman times, the Pandya kingdom was a trade surplus with Europe. But today, cities like Coimbatore and Erode have outpaced Madurai," he said. The reason, he noted, was not a lack of potential but a more modest approach to projecting achievements. Citing examples from his own constituency, PTR criticised past planning failures under the Smart Cities Mission, especially the granite paving around the Meenakshi temple. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Flexible Phone Plans for Small Biz Undo "It's uneven, it overheats, and blocks drainage," he said, stressing the need for informed urban design rooted in local context. He also spoke about long-delayed govt projects. "The plan to shift Madurai Central Prison took four years just to identify land. Execution timelines are glacial," he said, underlining the urgency for reforms in administrative efficiency. Pudhu the CII vision document, proposes a dual-city model — preserving the historic urban core while building a new growth hub 30-60km away. It envisions walkable townships, climate-smart industrial corridors, and citizen-centric governance. The aim is to create a city where tradition and technology coexist. Calling for collaboration, PTR said, "Documents like this, when driven by industry and civil society, are far more valuable than bureaucratic plans. The govt must work with associations like CII to make them a reality."

DFO absolves leopardess attacker despite video evidence
Pilibhit: After a 40-day inquiry into the assault of an injured leopardess, the divisional forest officer (DFO) of the Pilibhit forest and wildlife division (FWD), Bharat Kumar, absolved the main accused, Pyare Lal, of any wrongdoing, on May 27. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident which took place on April 5, involved the villager striking the big cat multiple times with an axe, which has been captured in a widely circulated video. DFO Kumar, instead of submitting a report to the field director of Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) – the immediate authority governing DFOs of PTR and FWD – filed his report directly to district magistrate Gyanendra Singh, which concluded that Pyare Lal had acted in self-defence and that his axe attack caused no harm to the leopardess. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from within the forest department. An IFS officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed disbelief at the DFO's decision. "If I were in Bharat Kumar's place, I would have booked the attacker under sections of the Wildlife Protection Act. This is undisputedly a wildlife-related crime," he said. The incident unfolded when a pickup mini truck struck the leopardess on the Pilibhit-Madhotanda road near Mala forest range of PTR. The vehicle reportedly dragged the big cat for about a kilometre before the driver abandoned the truck and fled. The injured animal then took shelter in a nearby vacant agricultural field. While forest officials waited for the rescue team to arrive, Pyare Lal, the owner of the field, approached the leopardess along with two forest watchers — Anokhe Lal and Rakesh Tiwari — defying the assigned protocol. Feeling threatened, the leopardess charged at the trio, prompting Pyare Lal to attack her with an axe. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The autopsy later revealed fractures in the animal's third and fourth vertebrae, and PTR veterinary officer Dr Daksh Gangwar did not rule out axe blows as the cause. However, a three-member inquiry panel formed to probe the matter established that Pyare Lal had thrown the axe in self-defence and concluded that it did not cause any injury. The IFS officer said, "Approaching and provoking a scheduled wild animal is a punishable offence under the Wildlife Protection Act. All three individuals should have been held accountable." Chief wildlife warden of UP, Anuradha Vemuri, said she will summon the concerned report for a detailed review, citing concerns raised by the video evidence. Meanwhile, the forest department has also failed to apprehend the truck driver involved in the initial collision. Sub-divisional forest officer of FWD, Anjani Kumar Shrivastav, said, "The vehicle owner, Amir Khan, secured anticipatory bail about two weeks ago. However, he has refused to disclose the driver's identity. The department has been unable to trace the driver so far."

PTR seeks sniffer dogs to check poaching of wild animals, illegal meat trade
RANCHI: Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) has sought a sniffer dog, required to check poaching of wild animals and illegal trade of their meat. According to PTR officials, they have written to TRAFFIC, a joint initiative of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the International Union of Conservation of Nature, for the same and expect to get a least in the next few weeks. PTR Deputy Director Prajesh Kant Jena informed that, Honey, a sniffer dog which was brought here in 2023, died a few months back, and hence, they need at least one to detect wild life crime. The Belgian Malinois, a special breed of dog, is used by forest officials for the detection of wildlife crime. The Belgian Malinois is a medium to large-sized dog with an athletic, lean build and a short, tight coat. Sometimes mistaken for the larger, heavier boned German Shepherd Dog. The PTR management uses sniffer dogs to track and prevent poaching of animals, mostly deer, and their illegal trade. 'Sniffer dogs are a part of protection regime in PTR as they are trained to detect wildlife crime and used in multiple things by the forest officials like detecting the crime scene and the miscreants. In addition to that, they are also help us in detecting meat of any wild animals being sold in the local 'haat' or market by sniffing them,' said Jena.
