NCRTC conducts full-length trial of RRTS train from Delhi to Meerut

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) on Sunday successfully conducted a full-length timetable trial of the Namo Bharat train service between Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi and Modipuram in Meerut, completing the 82-kilometre journey in under an hour. The trains achieved a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph. (HT Photo) According to officials, the trains achieved a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph, stopping at every station on the corridor while maintaining schedule adherence. 'This marks a significant operational milestone in the implementation of India's first Namo Bharat corridor, connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut,' NCRTC said in a statement. During Sunday's trial, Meerut Metro trains also ran simultaneously on the same infrastructure, and all systems 'performed as per expectations', NCRTC said. Officials said this is the first time in the country that local metro services are being operated on shared infrastructure with high-speed trains. NCRTC officials highlighted that travel times, which earlier took hours, have now been reduced to minutes. 'People can now work in cities like Delhi, Ghaziabad, Muradnagar, and Modinagar while continuing to live in their hometowns, closer to their families,' an official said. The hybrid signalling system and Platform Screen Doors (PSDs), installed at every station, were also tested and 'performed flawlessly', NCRTC added. At present, 11 stations are operational on the 55-km stretch from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South. Trial runs and finishing works are ongoing on the remaining 4.5 km in Delhi and 23 km in Meerut, the latter housing the 13-station Meerut Metro segment, which includes 18 km elevated and 5 km underground. For crowd control, steel railings installed at Delhi Metro's interchange stations

Now, commuters will soon encounter steel railings on all interchange stations of the Delhi Metro. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is installing steel railings on platforms at all 29 existing interchange stations to improve crowd management, enhance commuter safety, and reduce the chances of service disruptions due to falling objects on tracks. These interchange stations, which allow passengers to switch lines without exiting the Metro network, experience some of the highest footfall across the system. The railings are being placed on both up and down platforms to guide commuters behind the safety line and manage queues during boarding and deboarding. So far, 26 out of 29 interchange stations developed under Phases I, II, and III of the Delhi Metro have been fitted with these barriers. The remaining work is in progress, and similar installations are also planned for future interchange points coming up in Phase IV. According to a DMRC official, the barriers also help prevent accidents and discourage commuters from moving too close to the platform edge. 'They're part of our ongoing efforts to improve the overall safety experience at metro stations,' said an official. Since these stations are operational throughout the day, the installation work can only be carried out during a limited night window of around three hours after the Metro service ends. Officials said the installation area is cleaned up before the first train starts the next morning. DMRC said the steel barriers are being installed alongside other safety features like Platform Screen Doors (PSDs), which are being implemented on select lines. These initiatives, it said, are part of a broader plan to make stations safer and more efficient.

Nearly entire Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor set to open by June 2025

NEW DELHI: By the end of June, people can travel to Modipuram in UP's Meerut in just 45 minutes from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi as the final phase of India's first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor is nearly complete, officials said on Tuesday. The 82-kilometre-long corridor, known as the Namo Bharat corridor, is being implemented by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) as a high-speed regional connectivity project. Of the total length, a 55-kilometre stretch with 11 stations is already operational, while work on the remaining 27-kilometre portion is progressing rapidly, said an official of NCRTC. Work on a two-km extension from Sarai Kale Khan to Jangpura is still underway. Since the launch of services on the 17-km priority section on October 21, 2023, the corridor has steadily expanded its reach. In Delhi, the segment between Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar was inaugurated on January 5. According to NCRTC, Namo Bharat trains have already served over one crore commuters, the official said. The official said that to support last-mile connectivity, NCRTC has partnered with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and other mobility service providers. Some operators also offer discounts to Namo Bharat commuters, the official said. Fare for the Namo Bharat train journey from New Ashok Nagar (Delhi) to Meerut South is Rs 150 for standard class and Rs 225 for premium class. From Anand Vihar to Meerut South, the standard fare is Rs 130 and the premium is Rs 195. Trial runs are already underway on two key remaining stretches - a 4.5-km elevated segment between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and a 23-km section between Meerut South and Modipuram in Meerut, the official said. Trains can be seen traversing the full length of the corridor as part of ongoing operational testing, the official added. The Sarai Kale Khan station, the corridor's originating point in Delhi, is nearly ready. It has 12 escalators, four lifts and Platform Screen Doors (PSDs). Five entry-exit points have been constructed, and related infrastructure is ready for operations, she said. The official said that in Meerut, the final leg of the corridor features three additional stations - Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram. Shatabdi Nagar is an elevated station, where tracks, platform screen doors and other systems have already been installed. Begumpul, a major underground station in the heart of Meerut's market area, will serve both Namo Bharat trains and local metro services, the official said. The work is nearly complete. Modipuram, the last station of the corridor, is located along the national highway and will include a Foot Over Bridge (FOB) to facilitate safe pedestrian access. The official said that the trial runs have also begun on the Meerut Metro - a 23-km-long local service that will operate on the same infrastructure as the Namo Bharat trains. "This marks the first time in India that metro and regional services will share a common corridor. The Meerut Metro line includes 13 stations, of which three are underground," she said.
