Junior competitors relish chance to train with world class coaches at Albany's Princess Royal Sailing Club

Sailing Australia's regional participation program came to the Princess Royal Sailing Club last week, giving 32 young mariners an opportunity for world class training. The sport's governing body sent three trainers to Albany to help 32 participants in 25 boats over four days. Star of the show was Nia Jerwood, who competed at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics in the 470 class. She took part in a question and answer session before presenting certificates to the regatta winners. Albany sailors Eden Gray, 14, and Jay Devries, 14, were respectively second and third behind laser winner Hugh Healy, 15. PRSC training and development officer Benn Gray said the program aimed to help regional sailors access the best tuition. 'The aim of the regatta was to deliver high performance coaching to regional sailors who usually have to do a lot of travelling to access it,' he said. 'This is part of our club's desire to lift and help regional sailing.' He said it was an opportunity for home competitors to test themselves. PRSC commodore Rachel Hodgson said it was a brilliant day for the sailors. 'We have trainers at the club, but it was so nice to sit back in the viewing boat and watch the Sailing Australia trainers in action,' she said. She said the program would run again next year, setting up a trifecta of competitions with clubs in Denmark and Walpole. 'We will have the Denmark regatta in January, the Walpole event at the end of February and now Albany at Easter,' she said. 'It is a very exciting time for the club.'

PRSC awards honors champions in Permian Basin Road Safety

Mar. 5—MIDLAND — At its 3rd annual Road Safety Champions Awards event, the Permian Road Safety Coalition (PRSC) recognized several individuals and organizations for their outstanding commitment to responsible driving and safety in 2024. "We received a record number of nominations for these awards, which recognize drivers, first responders, and company programs that are making a positive difference in road safety across the Permian Basin," PRSC President & CEO Michael Smith said in a news release. "Their contributions to enhancing road safety truly set the mark for us all. We thank Texas Mutual for its sponsorship again this year." Receiving the "Second to None" Award was Eddy County, New Mexico, Fire & Rescue Chief Josh Mack. This award recognizes a Permian Basin first responder who has demonstrated heroic action in service to our community. Chief Mack partnered with PRSC to launch an initiative to help "rehome" excess lifesaving equipment to Dell City, Texas, Fire & EMS. Texas Department of Public Safety Sergeant Steven Blanco received the "Front Seat Driver" Award for his leadership in assisting the PRSC in executing the local infrastructure improvement strike team — a targeted campaign to improve roadway intersections with recorded frequent crashes and fatalities. The "No Need for Speed" Award honored Jesse Madrano with Chevron. This award recognizes a driver who has demonstrated exemplary driving habits. Madrano drove 1,023 hours in 2024 with zero infractions recorded by onboard technology. Michael Sims and Danny Yeager with Western Midstream received the "Safe and Sound" Award, which recognizes health, safety & environmental professionals who have demonstrated a total commitment to road safety during their careers. The Business Partner Safety Improvement Council (a collaboration among Chevron, Ranger, SLB, and Ryder) received "The Extra Mile" Award. The co-winners were recognized for programs implemented during the past two years that have positively impacted safety metrics inside their companies, outside their companies, or both. Ranger Energy Services representative Jim Kulis was also honored with "The Extra Mile" Award. Under Kulis' leadership, Ranger implemented an internal road safety program that resulted in a dramatic decrease in vehicle incidents over a twenty-four month period. The Permian Road Safety Coalition (PRSC) is based in Midland and leads a collaborative effort with oil and natural gas operators, oil field service and transportation companies, non-governmental and governmental organizations to improve road safety and reduce the number of traffic-related injuries and deaths in the Permian Basin. Hong Kong's civil service expected to cut contract staff amid deficit

Published: 9:00am, 23 Feb 2025 Some Hong Kong government departments are expected to cut the number of contract staff as authorities seek to reduce spending amid a deficit that is forecast to reach nearly HK$100 billion (US$12.9 billion), the Post has learned. Sources revealed the strategy ahead of Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po's annual budget address on Wednesday, as academics and lawmakers also called for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to reform the civil service and replace roles such as typists. Insiders said some departments began reducing the number of contract staff last year and were expected to make further cuts to the Post-retirement Service Contract (PRSC) Scheme and Non-Civil Service Contract (NCSC) Staff Scheme 'Civil servants will then shoulder all the work done by the axed contract staff,' one of the sources said on Friday. The insider added the government would not fire the workers immediately, but instead wait until the contracts finished and simply decline to renew them. The NCSC Staff Scheme was established in 1999 to provide a more flexible approach for employing temporary and short-term contract staff.
