APM team snares 12-ft-long king cobra in bathroom of unoccupied Selangau PPRT house

Handout photo shows APM personnel with the captured king cobra. SELANGAU (May 28): A king cobra measuring 3.65 metres long (12 feet) and weighing 8kg was captured inside an unoccupied Hardcore Poor Housing Project (PPRT) unit at Rumah Tandang in Dijih here this morning, after having first been spotted last week. Selangau Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Luke Douglas Dongum said they received a call at 8.15am from the longhouse chief that the reptile had made its way into the bathroom of the unit. 'A team was immediately dispatched to the location, arriving 21 minutes later. Upon entering the bathroom, APM personnel took about 30 minutes to capture the cobra,' he said in a statement. He said the snake was later transported far away from populated areas and released back into the wild. According to Luke, the residents informed the APM team that they had spotted the same cobra in the vicinity of the PPRT unit last week, but that it quickly disappeared when they tried to catch it. He advised those living in rural areas or adjacent to jungles to remain cautious and avoid direct encounters with dangerous wildlife, especially venomous snakes. 'Report any sighting to the relevant authorities. Do not attempt to deal with such animals without proper training or equipment,' he said. King cobras (Ophiophagus hannah), the world's longest venomous snakes and among the heaviest, have been listed as 'Vulnerable' on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List since 2010. In Sarawak, the king cobra is listed as a protected animal under the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998. APM king cobra Selangau snake snare

Sarawak to benefit from 703 new homes, 2,191 renovations under RM112.4 mln PPRS

Rubiah (fourth left) presents a symbolic house key to one of the PPRS recipients in Kampung Asajaya Laut. KUCHING (May 24): The federal Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) has allocated RM112.4 million to implement the Program Perumahan Rakyat Sejahtera (PPRS), a housing initiative aimed at improving living conditions for the poor in Sarawak in 2025. In a statement, the ministry announced that the funding will be used to build 703 new housing units and renovate 2,191 existing homes under the PPRS scheme in Sarawak this year. 'The implementation of this PPRS programme reflects KKDW's commitment to ensuring rural residents have access to quality housing, in line with efforts to achieve inclusive and sustainable rural development,' it said. The statement was issued following a site visit by KKDW deputy minister Datuk Rubiah Wang, who officiated a walkabout and symbolic handover of PPRS houses at Kampung Asajaya Laut, Asajaya recently. KKDW further explained that the PPRS initiative is a continuation and enhancement of the Hardcore Poor's Housing Programme (PPRT) which was reintroduced on Oct 1, 2024, to assist hardcoor poor families in securing safe and comfortable homes. Apart from the name change to PPRS, the financial aid for newly built homes has been increased to RM79,000 per unit for Peninsular Malaysia, and RM85,000 per unit for Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territories. Renovation support has also been increased to RM20,000. 'The house area has also been increased to 680 square feet with a flexible house design, as well as a new layout that allows for either horizontal or vertical construction, with a sharia-friendly concept,' it said. The ministry also revealed that under the 12th Malaysia Plan (2021-2024), a total RM377.7 million was allocated for Sarawak's Housing Assistance Programme. This funding has supported the construction of 2,317 new housing units and 10,629 renovated housing units, benefitting approximately 64,730 households to date. 'KKDW remains committed to improving the living standards and well-being of rural residents, especially in Sarawak,' it added. housing initiative KKDW PPRS Rubiah Wang

67 Beaufort Hardcore Poor Housing Programme homes ready but unoccupied

Published on: Monday, May 19, 2025 Published on: Mon, May 19, 2025 By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: The PPRT housing area appears neglected. BEAUFORT: Residents in the district are questioning the status of the Hardcore Poor Housing Programme (PPRT) at Taman Permai Selagon, which remains unoccupied despite having been completed some time ago. The housing project comprises 67 units and includes a multipurpose hall, surau and rows of shop lots. However, the area appears neglected and is beginning to fall into disrepair. Advertisement Mohammad Johawalia told Daily Express on Saturday according to a nearby villager, the housing area looks like it is 'haunted' as it is now surrounded by overgrown bushes and weeds. 'It would be better if these houses were allocated to those in need, especially as many people still do not have proper housing and some are forced to live on squatter land, which is considered illegal by the authorities,' he said. Citing the plight of residents in Kampung Jempangah who have been ordered to vacate land they had occupied for decades and now have nowhere to go, Johawalia said it would be ideal for the government to allocate the vacant houses to them. 'It would solve their long-standing housing problems, especially as some have been told to leave within two weeks,' he said. Advertisement He also said that the 67 units are sufficient to accommodate affected families while reflecting the government's commitment to addressing the community's housing needs.
