Kanniyakumari police prevent child marriage during awareness drive in Marthandam
Kanniyakumari District Police launched a campaign called 'Nimir' (The Rising Team) to prevent occurrence of crimes under the POCSO Act in the district.
Fifteen female constables have been trained — three from each sub-division — to create awareness of POCSO Act-related crimes and their punishments of them. Additionally, the number of children living with single parents has been recorded and efforts are under way to assist them and raise further awareness.
Accordingly, while carrying out an awareness drive in Marthandam area, a couple were found to have arranged a marriage of their 16-year-old daughter. After raising awareness of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act with the parents, the police stopped the scheduled marriage, a statement from the police said.
Superintendent of Police R. Stalin appreciated the officials involved in preventing the child marriage.
