Pakistan to lease ships for PNSC to curb $4bn forex drain
In a bid to save much-needed foreign exchange, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday directed authorities to lease ships to expand the fleet of the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC). The development came during a review meeting on PNSC matters held in Islamabad, read a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). Chairing the meeting, PM Shehbaz noted that due to the shortage of vessels in PNSC's fleet, the country is compelled to spend $4 billion annually from the national exchequer on sea-borne trade. The prime minister has sought a business plan for PNSC, which should be presented within two weeks. As per the PMO statement, the plan should outline a roadmap to eliminate the $4 billion annual burden on the national treasury. During a briefing on PNSC's performance, it was informed that the organisation currently possesses ten ships of various types, with a total cargo-carrying capacity of 724,643 tons. PNSC is Pakistan's national flag carrier, primarily engaged in the transportation of dry bulk and liquid cargoes globally. It was established in 1979 by merging the National Shipping Corporation (NSC) and the Pakistan Shipping Corporation. PNSC operates under the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Government of Pakistan. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahsan Iqbal Cheema, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, and senior officials of PNSC were also present at the meeting. Earlier in February, PM Shehbaz greenlit an extensive reform initiative designed to revive the country's maritime industry. The key components of the reform plan encompass restructuring of PNSC, the modernisation of the National Ports Master Plan and standardisation of tariffs throughout the country's ports.

Indian student at University of Calgary, Tanya Tyagi, dies in Canada
An Indian student enrolled at the University of Calgary in Canada has died under unclear circumstances, the Consulate General of India in Vancouver said on Thursday. The student, identified as Tanya Tyagi, she had travelled to Canada for higher studies. The Consulate issued a statement expressing condolences and assured support to the family. 'We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at University of Calgary,' the Consulate posted on X. 'The Consulate is in touch with the authorities and will provide all required assistance to the bereaved family. Our heartfelt condolences & prayers are with his family & friends of the deceased,' the post added. As the Canadian authorities have not yet released an official statement, the exact cause of her death remains unknown. Meanwhile, an unverified post circulating on X, tagged the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) of India and claimed that Tanya suffered a fatal heart attack. 'Appeal 4 help. Tanya Tyagi, a student from Northeast Delhi residing at 559/11D, Lane No 12, Vijay Park, had gone to Canada for studies. She died on June 17, 2025, due to a heart attack. The student's family has appealed to PM Modi for help in bringing her body back,' the post read. Tanya Tyagi's death is the latest in a string of distressing incidents involving Indian students abroad. Earlier this year, 20-year-old Indian student Sudiksha Konanki went missing while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. A permanent US resident and a student at the University of Pittsburgh, she was last seen on March 6 at a beach near the Riu Punta Cana Hotel in La Altagracia province. According to Spanish media reports, she was wearing a brown two-piece bikini, large round earrings, a metal anklet, and multiple bracelets. Despite international attention, her whereabouts remain unknown.

PM Modi to flag off first 'made in India' locomotive for export to Guinea from Marhowra plant in Bihar
New Delhi [India], June 20 (ANI): Furthering the vision of 'Make in India - Make for the World,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off a state-of-the-art locomotive built at the Marhowra Plant in Bihar's Saran for export to the Republic of Guinea on Friday, a release said. According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) release, this is the first export locomotive manufactured in this factory. The release said the locomotives are equipped with high-horsepower engines, an advanced AC propulsion system, microprocessor-based control systems, ergonomic cab designs, and incorporate technologies like regenerative braking. Speaking to ANI, Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity (EDIP) at the Railway Board, said the plant earlier produced locomotives exclusively for Indian Railways, but with increased capacity, India is now entering the global locomotive export market. 'Marhowrah Diesel Locomotive Plant is a dream project of the Indian Railway. Locomotives manufactured here were earlier being supplied within the Indian railways, and now with increased production, we have decided to export locomotives. We have received a big order from the Republic of Guinea, which requires standard gauge locomotives... 150 locomotives will be sent to the Republic of Guinea over the next three years for their iron ore mine,' he said. He added that standard gauge locomotives are in high demand globally, especially in Western Europe, Africa, and Australia, and the plant has been upgraded to produce both standard and broad gauge variants. 'We have modified this plant to manufacture standard gauge locomotives with broad gauge locomotives... Standard gauge locomotives are in high demand in countries of Western Europe, Africa, and Australia... Directly and indirectly, 2000-2500 people have been employed here,' he said. Sandeep, Managing Director of Wabtec India, said the locomotives are crucial for Guinea's Simandou Project, one of the world's largest iron ore mining ventures. 'The iron ore will be shipped to a port 620 km away, which will be done via rail, and the iron ore will then be exported to various countries. These locomotives are an important rolling stock that will drive trains 24/7, and we hope that it is a successful project...' he said. He noted that the project was awarded in 2015, with Wabtec holding a 75% equity stake and Indian Railways 25 per cent. Since operations began, 726 locomotives have been delivered to Indian Railways, and now 150 will be exported to Guinea. 'Over 99 per cent of the workforce here is from Bihar, and more than 1,500 people have been empowered through this project,' he added. PM Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Bihar and Odisha starting Friday, where he will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects. According to a release, PM Modi will begin his visit from Bihar's Siwan, where he will inaugurate the new Vaishali-Deoria railway line project worth over Rs 400 crore and flag off a new train service on this route. The Prime Minister will also flag off the Vande Bharat Express between Patliputra and Gorakhpur via Muzaffarpur and Bettiah. In line with his commitment to conserving and rejuvenating the river Ganga, PM Modi will also inaugurate six Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) under the Namami Gange project, worth over Rs 1800 crore. As per the release, PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for water supply, sanitation and STPs worth over Rs 3000 crore in various towns across Bihar. In a significant boost to power infrastructure in the region, the PM will lay the foundation stone for a 500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity in Bihar. (ANI)

Nine killed in road accident in Jejuri near Pune, PMO announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia
Pune, June 19 (UNI) Nine people, including two children, were killed and six others were injured in a collision between a speeding car and a stationary pick-up truck on the Jejuri-Morgaon Road in Pune district, said police today. The accident took place last night when a speeding car hit a tempo on the Jejuri-Morgaon road. Four of the injured are in critical condition, said police. The Prime Minister's Office expressed condolences on the accident, posting on X: "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident on the Jejuri-Morgaon road in Pune, Maharashtra. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon." The PMO announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from the PM's Relief Fund to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000 each. According to Pune Rural Police, a pickup tempo had stopped near Shriram Dhaba near Kirloskar Company on the Jejuri-Morgaon road. The work of unloading goods from the tempo was in progress. Two men were unloading the goods. At the time, a speeding car going from Pune to Morgaon hit the tempo, resulting in the death of nine persons, including two children and a woman. The dhaba operator and workers informed the police about the accident. The injured were immediately admitted to a private hospital, police said. UNI SP RN
