Myles Lewis-Skelly 'agrees new Arsenal contract after brilliant breakout campaign and talk of Real Madrid interest'

Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly has reportedly agreed a new deal with the north London club. The 18-year-old was one of the bright notes of a frustrating campaign for the Gunners. He only made his senior debut in September but ended the campaign as a key player for Mikel Arteta 's side, earning his first cap for England in the process. Lewis-Skelly's performances saw him named on the six-man shortlist for the PFA Young Player of the Year award on Thursday and big things are now expected of him in the coming years. The teenager only had one year remaining on his first professional contract and there was some concern among the Arsenal faithful following recent reported interest from Real Madrid. However, those fears have been allayed with the BBC claiming that he is set to put pen to paper on a new contract at the Emirates. His new deal will come with a significant increase in pay, the youngster committing his long-term future to the club. Lewis-Skelly featured in 39 first-team matches for Arsenal during his breakout season, including 23 in the Premier League. He scored his first senior goal in February during a 5-1 win over Manchester City, before marking it by imitating Erling Haaland's signature celebration. It was not a perfect campaign for Lewis-Skelly though. He was sent off twice, in defeats by Wolves and West Ham. Lewis-Skelly's first red card was later rescinded upon appeal. However, Arteta felt it necessary to sub him off to avoid the prospect of a third dismissal after he was shown a yellow card — one of six for the season — in Arsenal's 7-1 win over PSV Eindhoven in March.

He also won the most duels (six) per 90 minutes and ranked third for fouls won (3.1) per background as a midfielder is evidenced by a 93.6% pass accuracy, the fifth-highest figure in the division among all players to have featured for at least 1,000 minutes during England head coach Thomas Tuchel said after giving Lewis-Skelly his first England call-up in March, "he's nothing but impressive".

Arsenal duo named in PFA Young Player of the Year shortlist

Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have both been nominated for the 2024–25 PFA Young Player of the Year award. Photo via The two teenagers were among six players shortlisted for the award, with the winner to be announced at the Manchester Opera House on Tuesday, 19 August. Advertisement Nwaneri, still only 18, featured 37 times across all competitions for Arsenal last season, scoring nine goals and becoming an increasingly prominent figure in Mikel Arteta's squad. His performances have drawn comparisons with Bukayo Saka, who won the same award in 2022–23 and was shortlisted three other times. Lewis-Skelly, a defensive midfielder-turned-left-back who turns 19 in September, also enjoyed a breakout campaign. He impressed with his composure and tactical awareness in a position often unforgiving to young players, and capped his rise with a goal on his England debut against Albania earlier this year. The pair are joined on the shortlist by Liam Delap, who scored 12 goals in a difficult campaign for Ipswich Town before completing a £30 million move to Chelsea this summer, and Morgan Rogers, who contributed 14 goals and 15 assists as Aston Villa narrowly missed out on a Champions League place.
