DPM's working visit expands Malaysia's strategic network in energy, water sectors
TASHKENT: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof's official working visit to Uzbekistan and Russia is expected to expand Malaysia's strategic network in the fields of energy and water at the international level. Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, will be on a working visit to both countries from June 21 to 28. The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) said that apart from enhancing the Malaysian delegation's understanding of modern nuclear energy technology, the working visit is also an initiative to attract investors and strengthen cooperation and aspirations of MADANI Malaysia through the formation of constructive bilateral relations. The ministry added that the visit also reflects Malaysia's commitment to forming global strategic partnerships to address future energy and water challenges. 'It demonstrates the country's active role in exploring resilient and sustainable solutions through knowledge sharing, technology and foreign investment,' PETRA said in a statement today. Among the contents of the visit to Uzbekistan from June 21 to 24 is a courtesy call on Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to discuss bilateral affairs and efforts to expand cooperation in the fields of energy and sustainable development. In addition, the Joint Meeting with Uzbekistan's Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov will focus on discussions on technical cooperation and investment in renewable energy. In Russia from June 25 to 28, he is scheduled to attend a bilateral meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak to discuss strategic cooperation in the field of energy. Fadillah is also scheduled to conduct a technical visit to the ROSATOM Nuclear Power Plant in St Petersburg to review the latest nuclear technology and international safety standards.

Three Key Meetings Mark Final Day Of 43rd ASEAN SOME-PETRA
KUCHING, June 18 (Bernama) -- Three key meetings held in conjunction with the 43rd ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) have concluded the series of high-level dialogues on energy within the ASEAN framework. The host, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) announced that the third day of the event saw the convening of the 24th SOME+3 Energy Policy Governing Group (EPGG), which brought together senior energy officials from ASEAN member states and their three key dialogue partners, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. In a statement, PETRA said the meeting reviewed the implementation progress of Phase II of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) (2021-2025) and discussed the strategic direction for the development of Phase III of the APAEC. 'One of the focus areas discussed was the implementation of renewable energy, energy security and the peaceful development of nuclear energy. 'Additionally, the 3rd ASEAN Energy- European Union (EU) energy dialogue emphasised efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector,' read the statement. According to PETRA, the session highlighted policy exchanges between both sides, including the EU's reaffirmed support for the ASEAN Power Grid and the integration of renewable energy sources. It added that the session also covered the implementation of the ASEAN-EU Energy Cooperation Work Plan 2025-2026, which outlines initiatives such as the ASEAN Green Initiative and the Sustainable Connectivity Package (SCOPE). PETRA also announced today's final meeting was the Special Governing Council Meeting of the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), chaired by Malaysia. 'The closed-door meeting approved the ACE Audited Financial Report 2024 and discussed the implementation of the ACE Work Plan 2025, including the initial development of a renewable energy subsidy framework,' it said.

The meeting, chaired by Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli, featured a series of discussions, including energy-related consultation sessions involving senior officials from ASEAN member states. Delegates at the meeting unanimously agreed and committed to finalising two major agendas, namely the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) Enhanced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the second phase of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) for 2026–2030. Mad Zaidi, at a press conference, said the meeting also reached consensus on the implementation progress of the six annual key priorities for the energy sector in 2025. This included the preparation of a framework for the development of submarine cables, the signing of the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement (APSA) Successor Agreement, and the launch of the ASEAN Energy Efficiency Database and Investment Platform (Building). Mad Zaidi also said the selection of Sarawak as the host for the meeting was expected to have a positive impact on the state, particularly in the energy sector. This, he said, was due to the interest shown by delegates in Sarawak's vast potential in renewable energy, given its abundant natural resources and strong commitment to sustainable energy. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said international cooperation was crucial for ASEAN to realise a sustainable energy future, as this aspiration required member countries to adopt innovative technologies and enhance energy infrastructure.
